Indians trade idea (two birds with one stone)

Since this is being talked about anyway, I figured may as well start a thread on it.

So the Brewers and Indians obviously had that huge deal last year that brought CC Sabathia to Milwaukee in exchange for Matt LaPorta and some other prospects. The Brewers could possibly use another piece at 2B with Weeks being injured, and I think most would like to see the team acquire another starting pitcher to help Gallardo carry the load. Here's my idea:

Brewers get:

Cliff Lee

Mark DeRosa

Indians get:

Jeremy Jeffress

Tim Dillard

What do you think? Is this realistic at all? I don't think Jeffress is going to turn into anything really great, and I'd rather try to get something for him now. The Indians would also get a serviceable pitcher that can help them now, and one who might develop into a regular dependable type of starter.

I just wonder, even if Cleveland agreed to something like this, if Mark A. would be willing to take on the extra salary? I thought at this point we were almost maxed out on payroll.

So did you mean to include Escobar in that trade?

CC got 2 prime prospects, and 2 others. Lee alone will get more than the two you mentioned...Dillard is a nice pitcher, but middle relievers (or middle relief prospects) have little value in trade. Escobar is not going anywhere. Lawrie would have to be thrown in for the trade above to occur.

I know you like Brantley, but he's not a "prime prospect."

More like Parra. Dillard, Jeffress for DeRosa and Lee.
Yeah, that is probably more realistic the more I think about it...I would still do it if I was running things (which of course I'm not). A trade like that would put the Brewers over the top for this year, and we'd still have Lee for next season.

  • 1 month later...

What would it take to get Cliff Lee and Victor Martinez? Lee, the rental and Martinez has one and 1/2 years left on a good contract (5.7 this year + 7.0 in 2010).

I would start with Hart, Salome and Rivera (I doubt they would want Kendall), then add two prospects. Heather, Dillard, and other AAA players could round it out.

I think the upgrade in hitting at the catcher position plus a partner for Yovani puts us past the cards and Cubs. Anybody have any thoughts?

Lee has an option for next year, so they really both have 1.5 years left.

Keep going...you are pretty much talking about their two best players, both signed to very reasonable contracts through next season without returning any significant pitching (the thing Cleveland needs most). Shapiro should be fired and perhaps shot of he makes that deal.

I think if we called and asked for Lee and Martinez they'd ask for Gallardo in return. Seriously.

I don't think even Gallardo would be enough to get it done. Probably would need to throw in Gamel or Escobar and some lower level prospects too.

Looking back, it would've been pretty nice if we'd have made that trade on May 20 when this was posted
