Joe Morgan: "Why would I... read a book about a computer, that gives computer numbers?"

Say It Ain't So, Joe (SFWeekly.com article)

I could post excerpts... but I think it'll be more fun for everyone to post their favorite stuff. I was glad to see the article took Morgan to task.

EDIT: Whoops, this is an old article... saw it in discussion on another site & it was posted as though it was new. My fault for not checking more thoroughly. Here is the FJM.com take on the article, fwiw.

If Joe Morgan made a similar decision that John Madden has recently made (retirement), That would be getting rid of 2 awful announcers in 2 of my many favorite sports. It's great to dream, but I am satisfied that at least Madden is gone. Thinking that Joe Morgan would leave the baseball announcing business is just pure greed on my part because he's shown nothing but grit as an ESPN announcer.

Sadly...the Brewers will be on ESPN on both Sunday & Tuesday night next week. Between the brilliant commentary & the jinx that seems to occur whenver they are on ESPN...that may put an end to our streak.

Isn't it amazing that since that article, ESPN has taken it a step further and added Steve Phillips to the team. They couldn't get any farther from baseball logic if they tried.

While Phillips has his own head-scratchers from time to time, he's light years ahead of Morgan. I actually enjoy Phillips for the most part. He just needs to realize that when he says something stupid, saying it over and over again for the next 15 minutes doesn't make it true. That's when I change the channel and come back 1/2 hour later.

If I had Braun's pee in my fridge I'd tell everybody.

Morgan will be missing the Sunday game to attend his daughter's graduation. Hopefully she ended up more intelligent than her father.

If only he were the commencement speaker.

In an ESPN.com chat, Morgan was asked what he thought of Moneyball. He confessed he had only read an excerpt in the New York Times Magazine, then went on to write: "It's typical if you write a book, you want to be the hero. That is apparently what Beane has done. According to what I read in the Times, Beane is smarter than anyone else. I don't think it will make him popular with the other GMs or the other people in baseball." Beane, just to clarify, did not write Moneyball, any more than Joe Morgan has read it. Later, in another chat, Morgan was asked what he would do with the A's if he were Billy Beane. "I wouldn't be Billy Beane first of all!!" Morgan replied. "I wouldn't write the book Moneyball!"

Is there an adamant pro-Morgan faction out there someplace? I keep wondering why ESPN sticks with him, when he seems to be so universally disliked.

I get the impression that he doesn't like having Phillips in the booth with him, which only makes me like Phillips more.

It's not just ESPN. The Mets/Giants game last Saturday on Fox was a brutal Mets lovefest. I'm not sure who the announcers were, but they concluded that the Mets were easily the best team in the NL East and were only struggling due to injuries. After yet another error resulted in unearned runs for Santana, they casually mentioned that the Mets had defensive problems, but said their offense would "easily" make up for it.

This sequence of events made the choke to the Dodgers the other night that much more enjoyable.

Y'know that 4 cornered pointy hat with a tassle on it that graduates wear? That will be more intelligent than Joe Morgan...

I think its the same reason John Madden stuck around for so long: the networks are playing a prank on us.

Its a job that you can't get fired from one you get to a certain level. At worse you get a "Marv Albert" sabbatical. Pat Summerall showed up drunk for years and no one did a thing. And thats soemthign easy to observe, just plain old sucking? You've got to be Jerry Glanville obnoxious

There is no accountability in sports media. They can make crap up all the time without any effort of thought, and because it's just sports no one really cares.
