At least in High Desert they played http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/tongue.gif.

Remember Mike Lindskog, the former "Voice of the Mavs"? He's now with the AA Springfield Cardinals (AA Texas League). That guy was a nut, and there was nothing better than late night web audio with that dude after a Brewer game. Well, OK, there were lots of things better in life, but you get what I mean.

And God, were those Maverick teams dreadful year in and year out...

A much needed outing for Welch.

Huntsville Heads Home After Shutout Win

Welch Magnificent in Pitching Stars Past Mobile

By Brett Pollock / Huntsville Stars

David Welch tossed seven scoreless innings and Drew Anderson drove in two to help Huntsville blank Mobile 5-0 Wednesday night in the last of a five-game set at Hank Aaron Stadium. The Stars stopped a three-game slide to improve to 17-18 and remain a half game behind Tennessee in the North Division, while the BayBears fell to 22-18 and stayed five games behind front-running Birmingham in the South. The Stars improved their road record to 11-8 with only their third win in 10 games against Mobile.

Adam Stern opened the game with a walk, stole second base, moved to third base on a Shane Justis single and scored one out later on an infield hit by Anderson before Vinny Rottino grounded into a double play to end the frame. Justis finished the game with two hits in four at-bats and wound up going 12 for 20 in the series.

BayBears starter Cody Evans, who had allowed a dozen runs, seven earned, in his last start, settled down and retired 11 in a row after a Yohannis Perez double in the second. Justis ended the string with a one-out bunt single in the sixth, stole second base and scored on a two-out double by Anderson, who drove in his 16th run of the season.

Chuck Caufield led off the eighth inning with a home run, his second of the season and the Stars' second pinch-hit long ball of the year, to push the lead to 3-0. Stern followed with a single and another steal, his league-best 17th, and advanced to third base on a Justis sacrifice bunt that spelled the end of the night for Evans, who put together the BayBears' longest outing of the year at 7 1/3 innings. Scott Maine took over and gave up a run-scoring ground rule double to Kevin Mellilo, who would then score on a Ricardo Sosa throwing error on a Rottino ground ball to make it 5-0. Evans suffered the loss to fall to 2-5 after allowing seven hits, walking one and fanning two. He remains winless since April 18.

Welch put together the longest performance by a Stars' starter this season, yielding five singles, not walking a batter and fanning three. He recorded a dozen ground ball outs, allowed only one runner to advance to third base and faced more than four batters in only one frame. Welch improved to 2-3 and was followed by Robert Hinton, who tossed two scoreless, hitless innings to finish off the Stars first shutout of the season.

The Stars return home Thursday night to begin a five-game series against West Tenn with left-hander Chris Cody getting the starting nod for Huntsville against Diamond Jaxx right-hander Steve Bray. Coverage of the game begins at 6:45 PM central time and can be heard through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Final: Wisconsin 7, Kane County (Athletics) 5

Wisconsin Site Game Summary

Rattler win streak hits six

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GENEVA, IL - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers played a little home run derby to defeat the Kane County Cougars on Wednesday night at Elfstrom Stadium. Brock Kjeldgaard hit two out of the park and Corey Kemp broke a 4-4 tie with a two-run homer in the fifth. Wisconsin also got five solid innings out of their bullpen to protect the lead that eventually turned into their sixth straight victory.

Kjeldgaard gave Wisconsin (18-21) the lead with a long homer to left-center in the top of the second. But, the Cougars (23-16) tied the game on a two-out RBI single by Jason Christensen in the third.

Kjeldgaard put Wisconsin back in front with another solo homer. This one was a lead-off shot to left-center in the fourth. The Rattlers tacked on a run later in the inning on a RBI single by Michael Marseco.

But, the Cougars put together a rally -- with a little help -- to take the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Rattler starting pitcher Cody Adams walked the leadoff batter and gave up a single to put two runners on base. A grounder to third took a tough hop and was ruled an error to allow a run to score. Jeremy Barfield's RBI double tied the game and an RBI single by Petey Paramore made the score 4-3 Kane County.

Then, Wisconsin rallied again. Taylor Green drew a leadoff walk and Brett Lawrie drove in Green with a double to tie the game. Kemp put the Rattlers in front with a two-run homer to left-center.

The game settled down from there. Rattler reliever Liam Ohlmann pitched three scoreless frames. He also picked up a little insurance in the top of the seventh. Kjeldgaard doubled and would score on a single by Chris Dennis. That run made the score 7-4.

Brandon Ritchie relieved Ohlmann in the eighth inning and retired the side in order in that frame. But, in the ninth he ran into trouble with a walk and a single. Ritchie would get the first out and turn the game over to closer Jim Henderson.

Henderson got a strikeout, but would give up an RBI single to Steve Kleen that tightened the game to 7-5. Then, Henderson struck out Grant Desme for his eleventh save of the season.

Game two of the series continues on Thursday night in Kane County. Michael Bowman (1-1, 1.82) is the scheduled starter for the Timber Rattlers. Kane County has Shawn Haviland (3-1, 2.48) as their scheduled starting pitcher. Game time is 6:00 PM.

Wisconsin Box Score

Brock Kjeldgaard's OPS certainly got a bump with ten total bases; Chris Dennis on base four times, what a welcome addition; still waiting for 2008 2nd round pick Cody Adams (stats) to "wow us" -- check out the non-disastrous, but bland, game log lines -- more should be expected of a college pick taken so early...

Welch, Huntsville Stars blank BayBears

By ARTHUR L. MACK, Mobile Register Sports Correspondent

When Huntsville left-hander David Welch started against Mobile on April 13, the BayBears shelled him for eight runs in two innings.

On Wednesday night, Welch (2-3) got a measure of revenge as he limited Mobile to five hits and got two in nings of no-hit relief from Robert Hinton as the Stars blanked Mobile 5-0 in front of an announced crowd of 1,456 at Hank Aaron Stadium.

Welch pitched seven scoreless innings without a walk as Huntsville salvaged the final game of the series and broke the BayBears' three-game winning streak.

"The last time I faced them, they beat me up pretty good," Welch said. "After giving up eight runs in two innings, I had to get back at them."

Welch's pitching - which included a bunch of changeups - all but shut down the BayBears, who had only one runner advance past second base.

"He (Welch) mixed his pitches very well, and did a good job," said Mobile manager Hector De La Cruz.

Cody Evans (2-5) got the loss, giving up seven hits and four runs in seven innings. Pedro Ciriaco, who came back off a shoulder injury, got two of the BayBears' five hits.

An early lead enabled Welch to relax and keep Mobile off balance.

"I threw a few changeups and got ahead of them," Welch said. "That was the key, because they're a great hitting ballclub."

Huntsville broke it open with three runs in the top of the eighth. Chuckie Caufield led off with a homer, and Kevin Melillo scored on a throwing error after his double brought in Adam Stern.

"I needed a win for the team because in the past few games our bullpen got beat up pretty hard," said Welch. "We had gone deep (in previous games) and it was great to give them a break."
