LHP Dana Eveland designated for assignment by Oakland.

Rotoworld's comments --

Eveland gave up four runs on six hits and three walks in 2 2/3 innings during a spot start Tuesday night. He was a curious choice to fill in for the bereaved Dallas Braden because he was out of options and had a 7.40 earned-run average during his last trip through the bigs. He should draw some attention from other organizations.

RHP Gary Glover released from AAA by Florida.

LHP Joe Thatcher optioned back to AAA by San Diego.

MLB.com from the D'Backs:

In return for Felipe Lopez, the D-backs received outfielder Cole Gillespie and right-handed pitcher Roque Mercedes.

Gillespie, who was a member of the 2006 Oregon State University College World Series championship team, was hitting .242 with 12 doubles, seven homers and 27 RBIs for Triple-A Nashville.

The 25-year-old had the start of his season delayed by a sprained elbow.

"Gillespie is a guy we actually liked a little bit in the Draft," Byrnes said. "[He] has gone out and performed well. He had a slow start this year, had an elbow injury coming out of Spring Training, but he's in Triple-A and we think he has a chance to be a Major League player for us."

Gillespie will be assigned to Triple-A Reno.

Mercedes was 1-1 with a 1.08 ERA and six saves for Brevard County in the Class A Florida State League. The right-hander walked eight and struck out 26 and seems to have taken nicely to a relief role after beginning his pro career as a starter.

The 22-year-old has a low-90s fastball and what Byrnes said was an above-average slider.

"We like his potential as a reliever down the road," Byrnes said.

The D-backs are leaning toward starting Mercedes out at Double-A Mobile, but they could also assign him to Class A Visalia of the California League.

Former Brewer farmhand Travis Ezi was released earlier this week by the Schaumburg Flyers of the independent Northern League.

I had the distinction of witnessing what may turn out to have been Travis' last pro HR, a shot to the opposite field on the 16th of this month.

RHP Rob Bryson (Sabathia deal) just started an injury rehab stint in the Arizona Rookie League on Friday.

There are also links in our initial thread post to the Diamondbacks' Cole Gillespie and Roque Mercedes. Mercedes has made two scoreless appearances with AA Mobile in the Southern League.

What exactly are the Indians plans for Matt Laporta? He is 24 now and getting dangerously close to non-prospect status due solely to his age. They traded Garko but everything I have read is that they did so to make room for Andy Marte and first base and are not calling LaPorta up. He will be 25 next season, will he be an option for the Indians if Martinez and Marte are at firstbase?

Bill Pulsipher (yes that Bill Pulsipher), has resurfaced on the Northern League leading Winnipeg Goldeyes. Pulsipher, who turns 36 in October, had been with Puebla of the Mexican League earlier this year. Prior to that he last pitched in 2007 in the indy Atlantic League.

BTW, he threw 5 shutout innings in his first appearance for the Goldeyes.
