WI with a tough 1st on the defensive side of things, but Lawrie goes yard in the bottom half and WI is up 3-2. They have some rather serious base stealing issues defensively, it seems like every team in the league is running on them. It reminds me of my HS team, our catcher couldn't get the ball to 2nd so if a guy got on first the entire team would groan because he'd be in scoring position very quickly.

An eventful 4th inning now has the Rattler game at 7-4, bottom of the 5th.

While Efrain Nieves was nicked up some, he deserves credit for getting out of a bases-loaded, no-out situation (albeit after two runs had already scored in the inning). Great to see that Chris Dennis didn't take long to show off his power bat.

Clinton Top 4th

  • Nate Tenbrink singles on a ground ball to left fielder Chris Dennis.
  • With Denny Almonte batting, Nate Tenbrink steals (5) 2nd base.
  • Denny Almonte singles on a ground ball to left fielder Chris Dennis. Nate Tenbrink to 3rd. Denny Almonte advances to 2nd, on throwing error by left fielder Chris Dennis.
  • Travis Howell hit by pitch.
  • Jacob Shaffer singles on a ground ball to right fielder Michael Vass. Nate Tenbrink scores. Denny Almonte to 3rd. Travis Howell to 2nd.
  • Ogui Diaz singles on a fly ball to right fielder Michael Vass. Denny Almonte scores. Travis Howell to 3rd. Jacob Shaffer to 2nd.
  • Maximo Mendez called out on strikes.
  • Terry Serrano strikes out swinging.
  • Scott Savastano grounds out, second baseman Brett Lawrie to first baseman Brock Kjeldgaard.

Wisconsin Bottom 4th

  • Corey Kemp doubles (8) on a line drive to left fielder Jacob Shaffer.
  • Michael Vass walks.
  • Chris Dennis homers (1) on a fly ball to left field. Corey Kemp scores. Michael Vass scores.
  • Erik Miller strikes out swinging.
  • Michael Marseco triples (2) on a fly ball to right fielder Maximo Mendez.
  • Jose Duran doubles (2) on a fly ball to center fielder Denny Almonte. Michael Marseco scores.
  • Taylor Green hit by pitch.
  • Brett Lawrie pops out to first baseman Kris Sanchez on the infield fly rule. Jose Duran to 3rd. Taylor Green to 2nd.
  • Brock Kjeldgaard flies out to center fielder Denny Almonte.

Final: Wisconsin 14, Clinton (Mariners) 7

Wisconsin Site Game Summary

Slugfest in Wisconsin

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and the Clinton LumberKings combined for 21 runs and 30 hits on Monday afternoon at Time Warner Cable Field. The Rattlers outslugged the L-Kings for a 14-7 win. Chris Dennis homered and drove in four runs for Wisconsin.

Clinton (20-17) scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Terry Serrano drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly. Nate Tenbrink made it 2-0 with an RBI triple later in the frame.

Wisconsin (16-21) charged back to take the lead with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Taylor Green drew a two-out walk. Brett Lawrie launched the next pitch over the wall in left to tie the game. After a walk and a single put two runners on base, Michael Vass singled to knock in the go-ahead run.

But, Clinton took the lead back with two more runs in the top of the fourth. Jake Shaffer and Ogui Diaz had back-to-back RBI singles to make the score 4-3.

Then, the Rattlers got the bats going again in the bottom of the fourth. Corey Kemp doubled and Vass walked to start the frame. Dennis lined an opposite field home run to left to put Wisconsin back in front 6-4. The homer was the first for Dennis, who joined the Rattlers on Sunday. Wisconsin added a run later in the inning on an RBI double by Jose Duran.

Shaffer homered in the top of the sixth inning to cut the Rattler lead to 7-5, but the Rattlers had another answer. In the bottom of the sixth, Lawrie stepped up with two runners in scoring position. He smacked a single to right to drive in a run. An error on the play allowed the runner at second to score. Kemp would knock in Lawrie with and single and Vass doubled to drive in Kemp for an 11-5 lead.

Clinton got a homer from Travis Howell in the top of the eighth. Then, Wisconsin scored three times in the bottom of the eighth. A balk and a misplayed fly ball allowed the first two runs to score. Dennis drove in his fourth run of the game with a two-out single for a 14-6 lead.

The LumberKings scored a run in the bottom of the ninth on a single by Tenbrink to close out the scoring.

Efrain Nieves evened his record at 2-2 as he made it through five innings and scattered nine hits without walking a Clinton hitter.

Wisconsin has won four games in a row and they have matched their season high winning streak.

The Rattlers and LumberKings wrap up their five-game series on Tuesday night. Evan Frederickson (1-2, 7.33) is the scheduled starting pitcher for Wisconsin. Clinton will counter with Brett Lorin (3-0, 1.71). Game time is 6:35 PM.

Wisconsin Box Score

Taylor Green showing them how to do it, drawing three walks and a HBP, scoring three runs; Efrain Nieves did not walk a batter, as Chris noted, but did hit two, in an eventful performance; Brett Lawrie's 8th error of the season came when he failed to get over quickly enough on a stolen base attempt -- listening in to the action, he also seemed to make some other athletic plays, so the growing curve is about as expected; Lawrie could use some help on basestealing technique, now 11-for-17 on the season, a middling percentage; 23-year-old catcher Corey Kemp's bat has been hot since his arrival from Maryvale, sporting an .840 OPS....

No Hurricane in the Sounds lineup tonight. He seems like the obvious choice to take Rickie's spot with the big club.

Edit: He did eventually pinch hit though, so if he is going to come up, he isn't on the way just yet.

Final: Las Vegas (Blue Jays) 7, Nashville 5

Nashville Site Game Summary:

Link for new Carlos Corporan photo, text follows --

NASHVILLE - The Nashville Sounds lost 7-5 to the Las Vegas 51s on Monday night at historic Greer Stadium.

Nashville's loss tonight was the second loss in the past nine games.

Las Vegas took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning with a three-run home run to center field from J.P. Arencibia off starter Chase Wright.

The Sounds loaded the bases on a Brendan Katin beaning, a Jason Bourgeois walk, and a Cole Gillespie walk. Their first run came on an infield throwing error to first base by catcher Arencibia on an infield grounder hit by Michael Garciaparra. Carlos Corporan followed with a double to centerfield that scored Gillespie and Garciaparra for a 3-3 tie.

AUDIO: Corporan Double

Las Vegas took a 4-3 lead on a Randy Ruiz double that scored Buck Coats in the top of the fifth. Reliever Chris Narveson came into a bases loaded jam and got Kevin Howard to ground out to Garciaparra to end the inning.

Joe Koshansky tied the game at 4 in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI single to right field that brought home Alcides Escobar.

Nashville was able to take a 5-4 lead in the next inning on a sacrifice fly by Corporan that scored Gillespie. 51s catcher Arencibia received the throw from left fielder Aaron Mathews and missed the tag as Gillespie slid and missed home plate. Gillespie then dove back to touch home plate to score the run after the umpire didn't make a sign.

The 51s tied the game again in the top of the seventh on a Brett Harper ground out, making it 5-5. Las Vegas took a 6-5 lead on a home run to right field off Narveson.

Arencibia added an insurance run in the top of the ninth with his second home run, a solo shot to right field that made it 7-5.

Wright surrendered three runs on four hits, striking out two over 4.2 innings pitched. Narveson (1-2) took the loss for the Sounds, giving up two runs on three hits in 2.1 innings.

Jonah Bayliss (4-1) earned the win for the 51s, throwing two innings while giving up one run in relief. Jeremy Accardo earned his fifth save of the year.

The Sounds and 51s wrap up their four-game tomorrow night at 6:00 PM. Right-hander Nick Green (2-2, 4.38) takes the hill for Nashville against David Purcey (0-0, 5.40).

Is it curious that Corporan has started 2 0f the last 3 games behind the plate for Nashville? I'd like to see Corporan get regular ABs to see if he can develop his bat, but I'd still like to see Salome get every oppurtunity to develop his defense. I'd like to see Corporan DH, or even play 1B to get his ABs.

Final: Mobile (Diamondbacks) 5, Huntsville 3

Huntsville Box Score

Shane Justis (three hits) and Vinny Rottino each doubled twice, but an ineffective Bobby Bramhall (again) put the Stars in an early hole, down 5-1 after four innings; decent work by the pen not enough; Rottino did ground into a double play with the bases loaded to end the 3rd, however; J.R. Hopf's GIDP to end the 6th didn't help, either; Drew Anderson K'd to end the game representing the tying run...

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

BayBears Take Second Straight From Stars

Missed Opportunities Make For Manic Monday

By Brett Pollock / Huntsville Stars

Cyle Hankerd knocked in the go-ahead runs in a four-run fourth inning rally that carried Mobile past Huntsville 5-3 Monday night in the middle of a five-game set at Hank Aaron Stadium. The BayBears have won back-to-back games for the first time in two weeks to improve to 21-17, while the Stars fell to 16-17 after losing for a fifth time in six games. Huntsville fell into second place in the North Division, one-half game behind the Smokies after Tennessee split a doubleheader at Chattanooga.

Drew Anderson led off the second inning with a single against Jarrod Parker and scored the first run of the game when Vinny Rottino followed with a double, just his second extra base hit in 80 at-bats. The Stars advanced Rottino to third with one out but could not bring him into score. Stars' starter Bobby Bramhall retired the first six batters he faced before Sean Coughlin led off the home third with his first double-A home run to tie the score.

Hankerd's two-run double in the fourth put the home team ahead to stay at 3-1 and gave him six runs batted in over the last two games. Hankerd advanced to third on the throw home and scored on a Chris Rahl fly ball that pushed the lead to 4-1. Bramhall was lifted with two outs and a runner at first and followed by Donovan Hand, who hit Greg Bordes with his first pitch, gave up an infield hit to Parker and walked Evan Frey to force in a run. Bramhall suffered the loss to fall to 0-3 after allowing five runs on four hits over 3 2/3 innings.

Parker, Arizona's top-ranked prospect, grabbed the win to even his record at 2-2 after allowing a run on four hits over five frames. He walked four and fanned five and avoided damage in the third by getting Rottino to ground into an inning-ending double play with the bases loaded. He also stranded two runners in the fourth and finished his outing by retiring the side in order in the fifth.

Freddy Parejo's single scored Rottino in the sixth to cut the lead to 5-2 but Kyler Newby worked out of further trouble by getting pinch-hitter J.R. Hopf to bounce into an inning-ending double play with runners at the corners. Newby tossed a scoreless seventh and was followed to the hill by Daniel Stange, who worked a scoreless eighth inning. Adam Stern singled with one out in the ninth, advanced to third base on a Shane Justis double, his fifth of the series, and scored to cut the lead to 5-3 on a Jonathan Lucroy sacrifice fly. Stange then struck out Anderson to end the game to nail down his sixth save.

The series continues Tuesday night with right-hander Mark Holliman getting the starting nod for Huntsville against BayBears' right-hander Barry Enright. Coverage of the game begins at 6:50 PM central time and can be heard through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Justis prevails but Mobile shows no mercy

Stars 2nd baseman 7-for-12, 5 doubles in series

Mat Gamel hit his first major league home run Monday night in his first career start as the Brewers (24-14) completed a sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals, 8-4. The NL-Central leading Brewers have won 12-of-14, and 10-of-11 against the Cards over the past two years.

East of St. Louis where the Brewers prevailed, Justis prevails......

Shane Justis has been Captain America against Mobile. With three hits, including a pair of doubles tonight, he is 7-for-12 against the Bay Bears with five doubles in the first three games of this series, but Captain America's evil nemesis, Cyle Hankerd, continues to poison the well....... Hankerd went 3-for-4 and doubled in two runs in Mobile's four-run 4th, as the Bay Bears took Game 2 of this series, 5-3....... Hankerd is now 7-for-11 with six RBIs in this series and is 10-for-25 with nine RBIs against the Stars this year...... Justis is hitting .419 vs. Mobile (13-for-31) with six doubles, two triples, a home run, but just four RBIs. The opportunities just don't seem to come to Justis the way they come to Hankerd and this is why: Justis is hitting .311 with runners on base, but with them in scoring position, it drops to .240....... Compare that to Hankerd, the league's 3rd leading hitter. Hankerd is hitting .358 with runners on base and .389 with them in scoring position..... So what? Well, the Stars lost, falling a game below .500 despite hitting .298 this month. And they are 2-6 against Mobile. Justis outhits Hankerd, but Hankerd delivers the money.

But why waste the blame on Justis here? Bobby Bramhall, coming off his finest start of the season (6 IP, 1 UER), reverted back to his old self this season, throwing just 57 pitches in 3 2/3 innings and giving up all five of Mobile's runs..... The rotation only seems to be as good as Chris Cody (3-1, 2.39), as the bullpen, which threw 4 1/3 more scoreless innings tonight, thrives.

ERA IP HITS R ER BB SO
JEREMY JEFFRESS 7.57 27.1 26 29 23 33 34
BOBBY BRAMHALL 7.16 27.2 30 24 22 14 22
MARK HOLLIMAN 6.67 28.1 34 21 21 13 25
DAVID WELCH 8.71 20.2 38 23 20 9 16

So here's the ugly as it sits this month. Why a team hitting damn near .300 this month, and .276 with runners in scoring position, can't do any better than .500.

ERA IP HITS R ER BB SO
STARTERS 6.03 56.2 50 41 38 31 49
BULLPEN 2.47 47.1 42 17 13 21 45

The last Huntsville Star to collect five doubles in a series, by the way, was Drew Anderson almost two years ago. It came against Mobile at Joe Davis Stadium.

Tuesday, it will be Mark Holliman against Barry Enright (1-3, 3.93). A pretty consistent pitcher, Enright has not given up more than three earned runs in any of his seven starts....... Adam Stern, who drove in nine runs from his leadoff spot in April, has driven in just one in his last eight games, despite hitting .385...... Rickie Weeks will undergo season-ending surgery this week to repair a torn sheath that surrounds a tendon in his left wrist, an injury he suffered on a first-inning strikeout on Sunday in St. Louis.

Rattlers Report: Wisconsin 14, Clinton 7

Brett Christopherson, Appleton Post-Crescent

Canada celebrated Victoria Day on Monday. Meanwhile, a group of Canadian ballplayers celebrated a collective big afternoon at Fox Cities Stadium.

Taylor Green, Brett Lawrie, Brock Kjeldgaard and Chris Dennis - all Canada natives - combined for six hits, eight runs and seven RBI in leading the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to a 14-7 Midwest League laugher over the Clinton LumberKings.

"I guess so," Lawrie said with a smile when asked about the Canadian holiday. "But I don't know how you celebrate that."

By finishing with two hits, including a homer, and driving in three.

Lawrie's blast - a two-out, two-run shot to left - highlighted a three-run first inning for Wisconsin, which pounded out 14 hits and turned back the LumberKings for the fourth time in the series.

The 19-year-old second baseman has five homers and a team-high 27 RBI on the season, while his home run total is tied with Kjeldgaard for the club lead.

"I just looked for a pitch I could hit and got a hold of one," Lawrie said. "I'm just going out and just doing the same thing I've done every day. Just play hard and go at it. Just trying to drive in some runs. I guess I was the RBI guy today."

Actually, it was Dennis who led the way with three hits and four RBI. His opposite field homer to left drove in three and bolstered a key four-run fourth as the Rattlers turned a one-run deficit into a 7-4 advantage.

Dennis, selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 13th round of the 2007 June draft, joined the Rattlers on Sunday following a stint at extended spring training in Arizona. The left fielder added a run-scoring single in a three-run eighth.

"It's actually pretty cool knowing we have three guys in a row in the order, plus we've got Dennis down in the order," Lawrie said, referring to the heart of the Rattlers' lineup that has Green, himself and Kjeldgaard batting in the Nos. 3, 4 and 5 spots, respectively. "It was just a real fun day, and we played some good baseball."

Corey Kemp and Michael Vass added two hits and two RBI apiece to spark Wisconsin, which survived a 16-hit onslaught by the LumberKings - losers of seven of nine.

As for this Canadian connection? Brewers assistant general manager Gord Ash, also a Canada native and in attendance on Monday, called it a combination of coincidence and better talent.

"When we signed the closer at the end of spring training, I didn't even know he was Canadian," Ash said of Wisconsin right-hander Jim Henderson, who was tied for the league lead in saves with nine heading into the day. Overall, Wisconsin has five Canadians on its roster.

"So some of it is circumstance. But there's no question we're a lot more active scouting Canada than we used to be. And as a result, there are some younger players that came via that route. But I think the course of action for the Brewers is just to collect as much talent as we can from wherever they come from. It just happens there's kind of a convergence at the moment here of Canadians."

Turning point

The LumberKings were on the verge of breaking the game open in the fourth when they pushed across a pair of runs to grab a 4-3 lead and still had the bags full with nobody out. But starter Efrain Nieves - who allowed four earned runs in a shaky five-inning outing but still earned the win - fanned the next two batters and then worked out of the jam by inducing a groundout to second. The Rattlers followed with four runs in their half of the frame and never trailed from there.

Stat pack

4: Wisconsin's winning streak, which matches a season-high.

6: Victories for Rattlers pitcher Daniel Meadows, which led the league entering Monday. The left-hander, who won again on Sunday, has yet to lose a decision in 10 appearances and has 25 Ks, only eight walks and a 3.51 ERA through 25 2/3 innings.

121: Runs scored by the Rattlers at home. They're averaging 5.3 runs per game at Fox Cities Stadium, compared to 3.1 (43 runs through 14 games) on the road.

.278: Wisconsin's team batting average at home, compared to .221 on the road.

Did you know?

Clinton manager Scott Steinmann and pitching coach Lance Painter served in those same roles with the Rattlers. Steinmann skippered Wisconsin to the Midwest League Championship Series in 2005 and also played for the Rattlers in 1997. Painter, a Wisconsin native and former big league hurler, coached at Wisconsin in 2006 and '07.

He said it

"It's interesting in that at one time, Canadian ballplayers were very much the exception. And now it's becoming a regular occurrence with the coaching improving there. The level of play has improved there. And as a result, they're producing some better players." - Ash

2009 record: 16-21.

2008 record through 37 games (as a Seattle Mariners affiliate): 18-19.

Monday's attendance: 2,587.

Overall attendance through 21 dates: 65,481 (3,118 average).

On deck

Game time: Wisconsin vs. Clinton on Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. at Fox Cities Stadium.

Season series: Wisconsin leads 4-3.

Up and throwing: Wisconsin - Evan Frederickson (1-2, 7.33 ERA); Clinton - Brett Lorin (3-0, 1.71 ERA).
