Top Notch Starters at Deadline

Or 1 acquisition for a SP with some longevity to his service in Milwaukee?
Who cares about longevity of service time if he isn't good. Its risky to aquire a young pitcher and assume he'll take the next step. Another option is to aquire a great pitcher during the season.

The other assumtion you continue to make is that young pitchers are available in trade. Who has been traded since the start of the 2008 season? Edwin Jackson is the only one, and they likely would have asked for Hart. Jackson had a mid 4 ERA last year. Tough to predict he would be a breakout guy. He's not on my fantasy team, is he on yours? Props to you if he is.

I, like you, prefer a multi year pitcher, but if Bedard can be had for the right combination, I see no reason not to make the move. Jack Z likely sees morew value in our system than other GMs would.

Well it's easy to go to the worst case... Who cares about Bedard if he gets hurt again? Just because no deals have been I don't think it's exactly fair to say that no deals could have been made, and you really didn't answer my question, we aren't talking about a single year here. We're talking about last year, this year, next year, and maybe the year beyond. Are they to go after a rental every single season? Until the hole is closed, it continues to remain an issue.

Gamel is looking fine defensively so far at 3B, in my opinion. He'll have his hiccups, but he already looks more solid than Braun did a couple years ago. Besides, if you move Gamel to 1B, do you then try to trade for a 3B, or is there some other prospect people think will fill the gap? Otherwise it's Bill Hall back as the regular starter at third.

of all the prospects Melvin has traded in the past few seasons, I can't think of any of them who I'd like to see on the major league roster right now - LaPorta may be the one exception, but him being up would require one of the other regulars playing a corner OF spot or 1B to be injured (unless you factor the DH for interleague games)...I'd rather have Hart, Braun, and Fielder playing those positions everyday than LaPorta. The fact that losing LaPorta essentially gave the Brewers their first playoff berth in 26 years is something that I'm absolutely fine with.

Stockpiling prospects is a great way to build an organization - however times occur when they need to be used as trade ammo when needs arise at the major league level in order for a small market team to have sustained success. Only so many players can be on the major league roster, and minor league success doesn't guarantee stardom at the major league level for anyone. There are definitely bad trades involving minor league potential for a major league player (think A.J. Piercynski for Nathan, Liriano, and I forget who else), but prospects have to be used to improve the major league roster in more ways than simply waiting to see whether all of them pan out or not - the odds are in favor of a majority of them not being good major leaguers. I think sometimes Brewer fans got spoiled by how many of the recent high draft picks have made it up and became quality players at essentially the same timeframe.

Sure, the Brewers' minor league system would look even better if the prospects traded away were still around, but then again we wouldn't have Odorozzi, Frederickson (whoever was picked as comp players from the Linebrink trade), and more importantly the Brewers wouldn't have made the playoffs last year. There's also only so many prospects an organization can have and continue to give opportunities for development.

Yeah, but come on FTC, look at how many Minor League Championships we are missing out on!

That was an intelligent addition to the conversation...

I prefer to go after Buchholz. I think he helps this team right now, and makes the front end of the rotation outstanding moving into the future. Imagine Gallardo and Buchholz anchoring the rotation for the next few years. I realize Buchholz hasn't done much in MLB so far, but I still think he would outperform everyone in the rotation outside of Gallardo right now. I realize it would probably cost Hardy+prospect(s), but I'm not so sure we can't replace Hardy's so-called offense like many seem to think. Yeah, I know he will get hot (and maybe he already has), but most hitters do at some point.

Buchholz's numbers so far at AAA this year:

Team League W L ERA G GS CG SHO SV IP H R ER HR BB SO GO/AO AVG
PAW INT 5 0 1.90 12 11 1 1 0 71.0 42 16 15 7 17 65 1.35 .165

You might be right, but I can still hold out hope. The Red Sox clearly don't have a spot for Buchholz as they already are going to have to figure out how to get Smoltz into their rotation. I just don't think Melvin is willing to take the risk. It would be a move that if it backfired, could put his job on the line. Not many GM's have the guts to make those types of moves.

The more the market for a starter develops with injuries, the more I want to look back to Sheets as an option. I have no idea what his progress is at the moment, but if he's serious about making some money next year, the best thing he can do is to perform for a play-off team. Texas maybe a play-off team, but but they are in hitters' park in the DH league. Milwaukee provides familiar territory and opponents with a park that plays even (though the parks in the rest of the division work against my argument here). I can't comment on his personal issues with Milwaukee, but I'm sure the practical value of playing out the season with the Brewers should be worth overlooking any personal slights he or the team have.

I can't imagine he demands more than Martinez and a 2-4m bigger deficit in this years' books seems worth the price of keeping prospects.

Eric Bedard's shoulder checked out clean by shoulder guru Lewis Yocum. Bedard will be back before the end of the month. He's having an outstanding season.

I'm calling my shot right now. Bedard will be a Brewer, and we won't have to give up Escobar or Jeffress to get him.

Lucroy/Salome and Green will probably be in the deal along with Jones/Rogers. The other pieces to the deal I'm not so sure about Jack Z could go in a lot of different ways and he knows the system very well. Possibly even Brewer also going in the deal if there is one that is.
