MIL recalls Mat Gamel, Brad Nelson designated for assignment

I guess I just don't see how this makes any sense at all. They aren't going to bring him up as a pinch hitter. Hall has been playing well against lefties, and Counsell has been very good when he is in there as well.

When the heck is he going to play? I can't imagine that they would call him up just for the heck of it. It would be pointless unless they plan on playing him a lot.

Maybe Counsell tested positive http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

EDIT: Or maybe Hardy really didn't have a headache? A Counsell/Hall platoon at SS? Yeah I know I doubt just throwing out ideas

Could someone please explain what super 2 means? Does that mean that he's eligible for arby next year, or just a year earlier than normal? Sorry if this is a dumb question. I can never keep track of all that stuff.

All we heard in spring training on this board was that the best players deserve to be on the team. Now people don't want Gamel to replace Nelson? Gamel makes us better. He can hit. He should be able to play LF just like Chris Cohgan is doing, or he plays 3B and Hall can be the top OF reserve. He should be the backup 1B. Theres lots of roles for him.

If Gamel is up for good, he will be playing every day. He will get some days off against lefties but IMO you don't platoon a stud hitter until he proves he can't hit left handed pitching. He has hit it well in the minors.

You have to also remember that spot starting and pinch hitting is NOT easy...especially for a young player. This is not going to be Gamel's role.

But then what? Would that mean Hall would play shortstop?

Yeah I was assuming Hall would just move back to short. I'd be shocked if that actually were the case that we traded Hardy, it was just a thought.

Defense is part of the equation, Hall is a much better defender and kills LHP, so Hall should start every game versus LHP.

Yeah, but (now that it's not storming and I can actually use the computer and catch up on this speculation) what if J.J. doesn't really have a headache?

I'm wondering - and I apologize if it's been covered here already - but what other team is in need of a Hall or Hardy or other plausibly tradeable Brewer, at this point in the season?

Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

The Crew,

Gamel does not make Braun look like a gold glover. Gamel hasn´t even had an error in about three weeks and he has much better range than Braun.

By all accounts he is a much better 3b than Braun.

Alright, saying it makes Braun look like a gold glover is a stretch - a big one even, probably should have put it in blue since I was being sarcastic - but he still had 85 errors between 2007 and 2008 (and 35 errors in 2006). He may have had a good stretch over the past few weeks...... but that is a small sample size compared to 3 seasons full of errors.

I haven't seen Gamel play, but the scouting reports on him specifically mention his footwork and his accuracy...... scouting reports aren't always right, but the errors support this.

I've loved Hall's defense this year and Prince is a below average at 1b - if Gamel was the everyday 3b....... It scares me with those 2 at the corners and Weeks has been great, but if he regressed at all, then there are 3 liablities in the infield. With the crew seemingly playing in so many close games, I'd rather have Hall at 3b right now...... don't get me wrong, I can't wait to see Gamel's bat at the major league level but I just don't see him lasting as a 3b.

They might platoon right away, but someone will be traded then. It will not be a year long thing. Hall can play a lot of positions so it definetly does not have to be him that is traded. It could be Cameron, Hart, JJ or Fielder as well if Gamel stinks it up right away at 3rd.

I'm excited he's coming up, as we need another productive lefty stick. Notice that Florida is starting Chris Coglan in LF, he's a natural 3B who's never played the OF, and was just called up from AAA. Gamel can help us in alot of ways. We presently have the 3rd best record in the NL. We're a legit WS contender. Now lets finish the deal.

X, you and I don't always see eye to eye, but there's no way this move is to call Gamel up to play OF. I love Mat and I'm confused. I think a trade has been made.

My biggest issue with this is that Gamel should play everyday. If he does that, I'm fine with it. I just don't see how it's going to happen.

Unless there's another move associated with this, I'm thinking Gamel might be called up to pinch hit for a week and a half, DH for the interleague series and then get sent back down.

And saying that all prospects should be sent up as soon as they are better hitters than the MLB bench players is just so short sighted, IMO. You are potentially trading 600 AB when a guy in his prime for maybe 100 AB when a guy is still developing as a player. Now, if we are just talking about super two status, I might grudgingly go along with that line of thinking, depending on if the team is potentially playoff bound.

Nelson can't be outrighted, he has no options left.

I realize that, they mentioned it as well, but that's how they phrased it as if they were reading it off a release. Regardless, Nelson looks like the odd man out.
