Diehard Sounds fans can watch the series in Iowa via MiLB.TV. The cost is $6.95 monthly, $29.95 for the season for live and archived video feeds. The Sounds will likely be on MiLB.TV approx. 15-20 times this season, I'd imagine. It does not appear single game purchases are still available any longer, and blackouts (Des Moines area in this case) do apply.

CF Logan Schafer came out of Wednesday's Brevard County game early on. He chased down a line drive double in the bottom of the first and remained in the game for one more batter after that, but did not take the field in the bottom of the 2nd. It's going to be difficult to learn more given the lack of media coverage in the FSL.

I was hoping that was a good "wow"...

I feel bad for him on a variety of different levels as he fought so long and worked so hard to get so close to his dream. The only pitcher who's line I fear looking at more so far this season is Kris Dabrowiecki.

It's too bad.

Lame days off for Catchers... Salome is hot so keep trotting him out there I say!

Final: Brevard County 5, Clearwater (Phillies) 4

Rollin', rollin', rollin'...

Brevard County Box Score

It's insane, really -- 4.1 more scoreless relief innings for the Manatees, two inherited runners stranded -- you could take this bullpen and place it on the Nationals, and Washington fans would take it, what's in the candy and sunflower seeds down there? Still waiting for a "wow" start from Josh Butler (two HBP's, three walks on a mediocre at best day); the Phillies' Kyle Drabek struck out nine; lots happened on the basepaths, almost all in a good way for Brevard, both offensively and defensively; five 'Tees with multiple hits, including Eric Farris with three base knocks, a double among them; Caleb Gindl reached three times...

Brevard County Game Log

Manatees score single runs in the 7th, 8th, and 9th for the win -- nickel and dime it, baby...

Check out how Josh Butler finished off the 4th inning:

Clearwater Bottom 4th

  • Cody Overbeck flies out to left fielder Steffan Wilson.
  • Arlon Quiroz singles on a ground ball to right fielder Caleb Gindl.
  • Javis Diaz walks. Arlon Quiroz to 2nd.
  • With Freddy Galvis batting, Joshua Butler picks off Arlon Quiroz at 2nd on throw to Brent Brewer.
  • With Freddy Galvis batting, Joshua Butler picks off Javis Diaz at 1st on throw to Sergio Miranda.

Now check out how the game ended:

Clearwater Bottom 9th

  • Pitcher Change: Rafael Lluberes replaces Mark Willinsky.
  • Freddy Galvis flies out to right fielder Caleb Gindl.
  • Dominic Brown triples (3) on a fly ball to center fielder Lee Haydel.
  • Tim Kennelly flies into double play, right fielder Caleb Gindl to catcher Anderson De La Rosa. Dominic Brown out at home on the throw.

Caleb Gindl, oh yeah! That's why we check out the game logs for you, kids...

Final: Iowa (Cubs) 7, Nashville 4

Nashville Site Game Summary

Link for Lindsay Gulin photo, text follows --

DES MOINES - The Nashville Sounds lost to the Iowa Cubs by a score of 7-4 on Wednesday afternoon at Principal Park in Iowa. The Cubs were led by a great pitching performance by Cubs starter Jose Ascanio.

Ascanio (1-1) earned the win, striking out nine batters over five scoreless innings, while giving up only three hits in a 76-pitch effort.

The Cubs scored six of their seven runs in the second inning off Sounds starter Lindsay Gulin and never looked back.

Gulin allowed a single by the first three batters to load the bases, then his wild pitch scored outfielder Doug Deeds, making it 1-0. Matt Camp then knocked in two runners on a single to centerfield to extend the Cubs lead, 3-0. Jason Dubois capped off the inning by hitting a three-run home run that gave Iowa a 6-0 lead.

After being called up yesterday from Double-A Tennessee, former Brewers farmhand Vince Perkins gave up a three-run shot to Sounds first baseman Joe Koshansky in the top of the fifth inning to trim the Cubs lead, 6-3. All of Koshansky's five home runs and 13 RBIs have come on the road this season.

Iowa tacked on another run in the bottom of the eighth when Andres Blanco knocked in Deeds to make it 7-3.

Nashville pulled within three runs again when Hernan Iribarren doubled home Jason Bourgeois in the ninth, making the score 7-4, but were unable to stage a comeback.

The Cubs' pitching staff on the afternoon held the Sounds' 3-4 batters in the lineup 0-for-8 with six strikeouts. Iribarren went 2-for-4 with an RBI double, while catcher Patrick Arlis recorded his first hit of the season.

Gulin (1-2) picked up the loss, allowing six runs on nine hits over six innings for the Sounds. Matt Ginter followed, pitching two innings while allowing one run.

The Cubs and Sounds will play the finale of four-game series tomorrow night at 6:35 PM in Iowa. Right-hander Mike Burns (3-0, 3.00) will make the start against rightie Esmailin Caridad (3-1, 4.15).

Nashville Box Score

Interesting that Jason Bourgeois patrols center with Tony Gwynn in left; golden sombrero (that's not good) for Brendan Katin; Mat Gamel half a sombrero (0-for-4, 2 K's); two more hits and another double for Hernan Iribarren and his .862 OPS -- it's not like the Sounds have played in the bandboxes of the western teams of the PCL yet; Lindsay Gulin was outstanding if you wish away the six run 2nd...

Nashville Game Log

Mat Gamel handled two ground balls cleanly, including a bunt attempt...

Tim Kennelly flies into double play, right fielder Caleb Gindl to catcher Anderson De La Rosa. Dominic Brown out at home on the throw.

Man, that is awesome! Ben Badler from BA was just raving about Dominic Brown today, so to see Gindl gun him out makes it all the better, at least for me. I wonder how deep the ball was hit? Also, to get a win when Drabek was starting is a very positive thing. Butler is starting to figure it out a little bit despite today's game.

Final: Burlington (Royals) 6, Wisconsin 2

Wisconsin Site Game Summary

Bees Bop Rattlers

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI - Kelvin Herrera pitched five shutout innings in his 2009 debut and the Burlington Bees scored more than enough runs for him. Burlington beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 6-2 on Wednesday night at Time Warner Cable Field.

Burlington (8-17) scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the second inning. Rattler starting pitcher Cody Scarpetta gave up a single and a walk to the first two batters he faced in the frame. He would get the next two outs. But, a throwing error on what would have been the third out of the inning allowed the two runners to score.

Rattler catcher Sean McCraw doubled to start the Wisconsin half of the third inning. But, he was still there with two outs. Juan Sanchez then delivered a single to center, but McCraw was thrown out at the plate by Patrick Norris to end the inning.

Norris would single to start the Burlington half of the fifth inning. He would eventually score on an RBI grounder by Sean McCauley.

Herrera allowed three hits and struck out one over five scoreless innings. Herrera struck out one and did not walk a batter on the way to the win.

The Bees teed off for three doubles in the top of the sixth to run their lead to 6-0. Salvador Perez doubled in the first run. Another Rattler error put two runners on base and Antonio Jimenez doubled those to runs in for the Bees.

Wisconsin (10-15) got on the board against the Burlington bullpen in the bottom of the seventh. Brock Kjeldgaard lifted a one-out homer to left-center for his fourth dinger of the season. One out later, Edgar Trejo lined a homer to left. But, that was it for the Rattler offense for the night.

Game three of the series is Thursday night. Wisconsin has Trey Watten (1-3, 5.14) as the scheduled starting pitcher. Zach Peterson (2-1, 2.66) is the scheduled starter for the Bees. Game time is 6:35 PM.

Wisconsin Box Score

The left side of the Rattler infield with three errors -- overall, the club is really struggling defensively; Sean McCraw the only Wisconsin player to reach base more than once...

Wisconsin Game Log

A wild pitch by Cody Scarpetta cost him a run in the 5th...

Shawn Zarraga grounded out in the 5th, then after one play on defense in the 6th (not involving him at first base), this happened --

Burlington Top 6th

  • Pitcher Change: Kris Dabrowiecki replaces Cody Scarpetta.
  • David Wood doubles (3) on a fly ball to right fielder Cutter Dykstra.
  • Defensive switch from left field to first base for Brock Kjeldgaard.
  • Defensive Substitution: Michael Vass replaces first baseman Shawn Zarraga, batting 7th, playing left field.
  • Shawn Zarraga left the game due to an injured leg.

Wisconsin's Juan Sanchez went 14-for-28 to lead the league in hitting last week. (MiLB.com photo by Bill Mitchell/Four Seam Images)

The Appleton Post-Crescent with a photo gallery from the game that includes this photo of Shawn Zarraga -- was anybody at the game who saw how he injured himself? We'll find out if Voice of the Rattlers Chris Mehring can fill us in...

OK, it makes sense now how this injury could have fit within the game log sequence -- here's Chris' insight:

In the sixth inning with the Salvador Perez at the plate, Zarraga went after a foul ball in the Burlington bullpen -- which is in play at Time Warner Cable Field. He slid on the wet grass and hit the wall. After being down for a while, he got up and walked off -- with a limp -- on his own power.

No word on his condition after the game.

***

So Shawn Zarraga's initial game at first base in 2009, and perhaps first game there in his pro career, ends with a thud.

I was at the game and saw the whole thing happen. Zarraga was really hustling to get that foul ball in the bullpen. I lost sight of him before he hit the wall, but he was going so fast that I knew it wasn't going to end well at all. Wet grass or not, he would have hit that wall hard. And that wall is not padded at all, just cement. I was wondering why Zarraga was playing first, but the T-Rats are so short on outfielders (3 on the roster with the Komatsu injury), they moved the everyday 1B Brock Kjeldgaard to LF for the game. Hope the guy is OK. He did get up and walk off on his own.
