The Trade for my favorite player of all-time

Just a fun topic.

Nothing serious.

But what do you guys think it would take to get Ken Griffey Jr. from the Reds. He is having a great resurgent season and is owed 12.5 million this year and next with a lot of it deferred.

A lot of people talk about how the brewers need a right fielder, (although I think we already have one in Hart)

The reason I bring him up is because he was my favorite player as a kid, he is nearing the end of his career without having won a ring and the Reds look like they are out of it again and it is only the middle of May, plus he is great friends with Prince Fielder.

Now I know that it would probably never happen being inter division and all but what if Prince and Griffey talked and Griffey somehow coerced Cincinatti Management into trading him to the Brewers.

Would a package of Gross, Jackson, and another prospect get it done.

What would you give up for him and how sweet would a lineup of

Weeks

Hardy

Prince

Hall

Griffey

Braun

Jenkins/Hart

Estrada

look come October.

Just a name to throw out there.

I bet the Brew Crew could get Griffey for Jackson if we are willing to eat his whole contract. A SP prospect that will almost definetly pitch in the majors is worth almost any aging position player. With that being said, sorry but it will never happen. The Crew does not need anymore outfielder and does not have a history of trading for expensive old player rentals (D. Bell=exception and he is no Griffey) Your just going to have to enjoy watching him hit for the Reds. I really like him to. If he started taking the same stuff Barry Bonds was on I think he could be challenging Bonds for the all-time HR mark.

the problem with griffey is that when he's good and healthy, people come to see see him play and cincy would never part with him while those people are coming to the ballpark.

the time to trade for griffey is when he's injured or coming off an injury and his salary seems to be a liability to the reds. the problem with that scenario is that when he's injured, the brewers would have no real need or desire for him.

Griffey has been my favorite player for basically my entire life...I'd jump up and down if here were actually a Brewer...that being said, probably will never happen and I'm not sure I'd like giving up what it took to get him.

I doubt the reds would ask for much. they would be more interested in lowering their payroll. However, as i said earlier, griffey and Dunn are gate attractions. So I doubt the reds would trade griffey. Every team needs a gate attraction and somebody to put on the cover of programs and the back of jerseys.

Principessa21 - what do you have against Junior?

Well first, I'm scarred from the 95 division series. But also something about him always rubbed me the wrong way. I know I shouldn't be suprised that a ballplayer is pampered and arrogant, but I don't appreciate it. For a recent example, I've read something from a scout who saw him sit down on second base twice during a minor league game. But seriously, I was a little haste in my previous post. No matter how much it kills me to say it, I'm glad to see him move up on the home run list, and if I can survive the Yanks getting Clemens back in 99, then I could survive the Brewers getting Griffey.

Griffey is also my favorite player of all time. He was the focal point of my baseball card colection. I think I have seven of his rookie cards and 200 of his cards overall..

That being said, I think he would push the brew crew over the top. How about this.......

Reds get: Zach Jackson, Latin Cappy, Mench

Brewers get: Edwin Encarnacion and Griffey

This makes tons of sense giving the Braun injury and the Reds' overall lack of pitching. Edwin could keep third base warm until next year or whenever, and Griffey would instantley bolster our offense. It makes sense to buy low on Encarnacion.

Weeks 2B

Hardy SS

Prince 1B

Hall OF

Griffey OF

Jenkins/Hart OF

Edwin 3B

Estrada C

I'd take that!

Tedaldtada29,

I realize this is pure conjecture and all, but if you are Red's management, why would you possibly trade:

1. an OF who currently has a 950 OPS, is a sure hall-of-famer, and whose dad also starred on the team during its hey-day AND

2. a 3b who, although he is slumping horribly through 100 AB's, at age 23 put up 800+ OPS

FOR

1. a 24-year old pitching prospect who hasn't put up a sub-4.00 ERA since he was in high A ball

2. a 26-year-old reliever who couldn't make the majors out of spring training and proceeded to go AWOL AND

3. A 28-year-old LF who's making Johnny Estrada look selective at the plate by comparison

It might save the Reds a little money in the short term, but I think the luster has faded a little bit on Zack Jack's and Cappy's once bright major league futures. They're probably both still talented enough to hang around for a while on major league rosters, but I think their days as "top prospects" is probably passed. I don't think the Reds do that trade from a talent stand-point, let alone a marketing one. Of course if the Brewers were to sweeten the pot by dangling Inman as part of that package, maybe the Reds would bite, but boy would I hate to trade Inman to a division rival...

Yes, i do see your point.

I was thinking that the Reds already have plenty of offense, but their pitching is extremely weak. Zack and Latin Cappy have major league experience and major league stuff. The Reds won't be getting a number one starter and an all-star closer but those two still have some decent prospect type value. Plus, Mench becomes their 4th outfielder making room for Josh Hamilton everyday. Also, they have Jay Bruce and Joey Votto just about ready to join the big club. That would leave them with Dunn, Hamilton, and Bruce in the OF, Freel or Brandon Phillips at third and Votto at first.

I don't know, I don't think the Reds would hang up on the Brewers or anything if the trade was suggested.

I find it hard to believe that Jr. Griffey would sign off on a trade to the Brewz, but if he would, I can't imagine that the bounty for him would be his weight in gold...or green. More than likely, they'd be lucky to get his weight in feces if he were traded to an NL team with his injury history.
