Rivera to DL -- Carlos Corporan added to 40-man, 25-man roster

I'd never heard of the guy before yesterday! But good for him. They have games for the next 11 straight days. I won't be surprised if he starts on Sunday afternoon.

I feel for Rivera who's finally being given the chance to play at least once in a while. Too bad for Vinnie too. His best chance was last Spring, but now I'm afraid his time has come and gone. He never should have skipped Spring Training for the WBC. He had a chance to beat out McGehee with a strong Spring. Too bad no one picked him up when he was DFA'd, 'cause like Iribarren he'll probably never get a shot in Milwaukee.

I didn't quite remember the name of another obscure Brewer minor leaguer that got a similar callup in 2005. After a look at Baseball Reference, I came across Julio Mosquera. He got one plate appearance. I can recall some of the articles from spring training that mentioned that Corporan was a good receiver.

Must've been something in the Domenico's that season! I caught a few games that year there.

Maybe you're next on the call-up depth chart?

Congrats to Carlos, and I'm with X in hoping that with some good results and/or luck, he'll make the most of this shot.

I remember being at that game and thinking "Who the heck is Mosquera?" He struck out or flew out as well (can't remember exactly). I think he was sent back down soon after that.

Looking him up, what's weird is that he was with the Blue Jays in '96 and '97, and wasn't back in the majors until that short stint with the Brewers in '05.

The spread/dues topic probably deserves its own thread, as it is fairly interesting. Todd Jones wrote/writes a column for TSN, and this subject was addressed here: http://www.sportingnews.c.../viewtopic.php?p=1993347 Per the piece, players get $84/day, only on the road. He says that most guys pay the clubhouse manager $50/day, both on the road and at home, while the big guys pay up to $150.

I believe that any errands that are run are expected to be tipped on top of that.

The article says: The dues pay for our postgame food spreads, among other things. I've been told food spreads for a season can cost about $80,000. Let's see 25 players X $50 X 162 games = $202,500 - $80,000 = $122,500 leftover for the clubhouse manager (I think whoever said they are not paid much appears to be mistaken).

You missed the point, the players are actually paying the clubhouse staff out of their own pockets, and it's spread around to the entire staff, not just to the manager. The teams don't pay the guys very much... Dhonks would know exactly how this works, as he has experience in the clubhouse.

I'm lovin' the fact that Carlos is a switch hitter. It feels like we've had precious few of those over the past few years.

There, I said it.

But I'm assuming Corporan isn't that slow.

How excited is Corporan? From Haudricourt's notes:

"As soon as Corporan hung up with Money, he called his grandfather, Alberto Hernandez, the man who raised him in Puerto Rico. When he heard the news, Hernandez immediately thanked God and started crying. Overwhelmed by his grandfather's emotion, Corporan also started crying uncontrollably as shoppers walked past him in the mall"

Make no mistake, it's special for every guy to get called up to the majors the first time. But the guys who were drafted high and always on everyone's prospects lists, it's kind of taken for granted that it will happen eventually. For guys like Corporan and DiFelice last year that persevere when it must seem that they'll never get that chance, it's really special.

I would hope that Macha gets him in there somehow in these two weeks.

I may have missed this, but does Corporan have experience catching Parra or Gallardo in the minors? Just wondering if that would be a factor on when/if he gets a start. Just glancing at b-ref, it looks like Carlos and Parra were at the same teams in the same years sometimes, but I don't know how many games they were at the same level. It looks like Carlos and Yo were in WV for all of 2005 and maybe parts of 2006 and 2007.

Congrats to Carlos. I, too, hope that he's able to start at least one game while he's up. If he truly is a defense first catcher, I wouldn't think his bat could be that much worse then Kendall's at this point. As far as those that thought we'd go with one catcher, and McGehee as his backup, that would leave us with no right handed bats off the bench, as McGehee woud have to be the last guy off the bench. Now we at least have one righty pinch-hitter.

Blanco was pretty atrocious offensively when we had him but I believe brought his hitting up a bit the past five years or so ago. Beyond this year, you wonder what the near future holds for the Brewers. Do we try to sign Kendall for another year as the starter? Does he accept being a backup in Milwaukee? Does Rivera get a chance to start? Is a good year by Salome in AAA give him the starting nod next year? Is Lucroy the guy we are waiting on and thus need another year of a stopgap?

Good question, and it's a good thing to have some talented catchers in the system. I'd think the 2010 starting catcher job is Salome's to lose at this point, with Rivera as his backup. If Kendall is hitting in the low .200's and Salome proves he can play defense, I think there's a chance Salome could even be brought up later this year, much like Soto for the Cubs two years ago. 2011 we could have Lucroy and Salome on some sort of 3/2 split. I'd guess someone would be dealt at some point if they both prove they can play.
