Final: Chattanooga (Dodgers) 7, Huntsville 6, ten innings

Huntsville Site Game Summary

Lambo Leads Looks to Walk Off Win

Huntsville Heads Home After Road Trip Split

Brett Pollock for MiLB.com

Andrew Lambo crunched a walk-off home run to lead off the tenth inning to lift the Lookouts to a dramatic 7-6 come from behind win over the Stars Wednesday afternoon in the last of a five-game set at AT&T Field. Chattanooga ended the series by winning the last three games to improve to 6-14, while Huntsville dipped to 10-10 and to a half game behind Tennessee in the North Division. The Stars finished their first road trip of the year splitting 10 games.

Lambo launched a 1-0 offering from Derrick Ellison over the wall in right field for his third home run of season to hand the Stars their second walk off loss of the road trip. The young left fielder wound up a triple shy of hitting for the cycle, scored three times and drove in a pair. Ellison, who had grabbed his first double-A win and save on the trip, suffered the loss.

Huntsville scored three times in the eighth inning to regain the lead at 6-4 in a back and forth affair. Drew Anderson, brought on as a pinch-hitter against the right-hander Matt Sartor, delivered his first hit against a left-hand thrower when he doubled off of Carmen Cali, who was brought on to counter the Stars' switch, to drive in two and put the visitors back on top. Shane Justis was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in another run but the lead didn't last very long. Ellison opened the bottom half of the inning on the hill and walked Lambo to open the frame. Jamie Hoffman followed with a double to plate Lambo and came into score to tie the game when Gabriel Martinez singled off the glove of a diving Justis at second base. The Stars loaded the bases with one out in the ninth against Cali but Anderson bounced into a double play to end the frame.

The Stars scored in the first two innings against James Adkins with ground ball outs. Vinny Rottino bounced into a double play in the first with runners at the corners to chase home Justis and Chuck Caufield's ground out to second base in the second inning plated Chris Errecart to give the visitors a 2-0 edge. The Lookouts tallied a run in the home second when Martinez led off with a double, moved to third base on a ground out and crossed the plate on a J.D. Closser base hit. Chattanooga tied the game in the fourth on a Victor Mercedes scoring fly ball.

Adam Godwin drew a leadoff walk in the fifth, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a Lambo double. Mark Holliman uncorked a wild pitch to move Lambo to third and he then scored on a base hit by Hoffman that gave the Looks a 4-2 lead and knocked the Stars' right-hander out of the game. Holliman was charged with four runs on eight hits, while walking two and striking out two.

Adkins committed a throwing error in the sixth inning that allowed Kevin Melillo to score from second base to pull the Stars within 4-3. The right-hander got out of further trouble by striking out the next two hitters and recording a ground ball out to strand two runners. He gave up six hits, walked two and struck out two over his six innings of work.

The Stars return home Thursday to open a crucial five-game series against Tennessee with right-hander Jeremy Jeffress taking the hill against Smokies' left-hander Casey Lambert. Coverage of the game begins at 6:45 pm central time heard through and can be the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Huntsville Box Score

Yohannis Perez 0-for-3 (.289), falling back to earth -- his prior numbers have been so dreadful, hopefully no one was caught up in false hope after two weeks...

The first 4 batters for BC walked... some weirdness in our minor league games the last 3 days/nights.

Eight hits given up in four innings for Cody Adams. I mentioned this back in the Border Battle link report, but he really disappointed me. Upper 80s on his fastball and way too hittable. This is 18 hits in 14 innings for a college pitcher in A ball.

Mike Jones. Is our little lad finally growing up? Very nice outing thru 5.

I'd feel better if he'd K more guys... the K:BB ratio is okay, I wonder how hard he's throwing these days? I'll always root for Mike... Jones and Little Ben in the AA rotation, the first minor league team I religiously followed as my time at BF.net got started (different user name).

edit. Jones pitched 7 complete, that's good to see.

Sanchez is earning himself the 3B job in WI, he's been hitting well lately... Trejo just hasn't gotten on track.

Wheeler has been ice cold lately, I hope he gets going again. Gindl hitless thus far, has to be a mistake in the box score, he's been too studly thus far to go hitless. Wilson goes yard again and Brewer's average is south of .230 again.

Lawrie with 2 hit so far, Kemp continues to do well, I was hoping for much more out of Zarraga, he's 2 for 22 as I type this... it's still very early and he's splitting time, but I would have hoped for more, and it's tough to get a sense of his ABs on the radio. I hope to see these WI kids on Sunday.

Not only did Jones throw 7 innings, but both runs came in the 7th. So Either way (6 shutout or 7 with 2 ER) this was a great outing. He's become quite the GB pitcher, too. Last year he amazingly started the year in a rotation, a mere 9-10 months after Tommy John surgery. His rate of hits allowed is similar to last year, but the difference is the lack of walks (2008: 59BB in 75 IP; 2009: 6BB in 22 IP).

Mike is now several years removed from his last shoulder surgery, so the shoulder likely feels as good as it has in years. The elbow is likely also feeling as good as it has in at least 2 years. It's not too late for him, as guys like Carl Pavano, Jaret Wright, Jeff D'Amico, etc had some good years after a bunch of injuries. Mike just turned 26, so this could be positive for him. However, I'd really love to see how his velocity and movement are these days. If he can get that velocity to around 88-90, get groundballs, and continue to improve his command, he could have a future. Although those are three big if's for him.

Final: Brevard County 5, Daytona (Cubs) 2

Brevard County Site Game Summary

Manatees Bash Cubs, 5-2

By Tyler Stover / Brevard County Manatees

Brevard County received another strong pitching performance on Wednesday, and turned it into another victory, beating Daytona, 5-2. A day after Evan Anundsen's no-hitter, it was Mike Jones' turn to pick apart the Cubs lineup. Jones (3-0) cruised through his first six innings, facing the minimum 18 batters and holding the Cubs scoreless. The Cubs finally got on the scoreboard in the seventh inning, when Marwin Gonzalez took Jones deep for a two-run homer. This ended a 22-inning streak in which the Manatees had held the Cubs scoreless. Jones went seven innings for the Manatees, allowing two runs on four hits.

Brevard County was limited to just five hits in the game, but made enough plays to put runs on the board. The Manatees got on the board early, as Daytona starter Rafael Dolis (0-3) struggled to find the plate early in the game. He walked the first four batters he faced, allowing a run to score. The Manatees added another run on a grounder that went for a double play. Steffan Wilson extended the lead to 3-0 in the second inning with a towering home run to right-center field, his second of the season.

After Gonzalez's home run cut the lead to 3-2, the Manatees picked up a couple insurance runs in the eighth inning. With runners on first and second, Brent Brewer ripped a single to center field, scoring Zelous Wheeler. Lee Haydel moved over to third when Gonzalez bobbled the ball. This was a key error, as it allowed Haydel to score on Steffan Wilson's sacrifice fly, making it a 5-2 game. That was plenty of cushion for Manatees' closer Rob Wooten, who pitched a scoreless ninth for his fifth save.

Brevard County heads back to Daytona to wrap up the series on Thursday. Amaury Rivas (1-1, 1.64 ERA) will look to keep the Manatees' momentum going, as he takes on Daytona's James Leverton (1-1, 5.79 ERA). A Brevard County win would even the I-95 Battle for the Roadside Trophy Series at 4-4. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM (6:05 Central).

Brevard County Box Score

Mark Willinsky deserves a mention for his 1-2-3 8th inning with a one-run lead at the time; small samples, sure, but ten Manatee pitchers sport ERA's under 2.00...

Final: Wisconsin 6, Great Lakes (Dodgers) 3

Wisconsin Site Game Summary

Kemp powers Rattlers

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI -- Corey Kemp homered and drove in four runs to pace the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers to a 6-3 win over the Great Lakes Loons Wednesday at Time Warner Cable Field. The win ended a four game losing streak for the Rattlers.

Kyle Russell gave the Loons (10-9) an early lead with a two-out, two-run homer in the top of the first inning.

Kemp had the answer for the Timber Rattlers (8-10) in the bottom of the first. The Rattler catcher homered off the scoreboard above the wall in left-center on a 2-1 pitch from Great Lakes starter Kyle Smit. The three-run blast put the Rattlers up 3-2.

Wisconsin padded their lead with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Juan Sanchez drew a lead-off walk. A double by Brett Lawrie knocked in Sanchez all the way from first for the 4-2 advantage.

Great Lakes pulled closer in the top of the fifth. Dee Brown reached on an error and scored on an error in the frame. Later in the inning, Kyle Russell was at second with two outs. Tony Delmonico singled to right and Russell tried to score. But a strong throw to the plate by right fielder Erik Miller cut down Russell and kept the Rattlers in front.

Timber Rattler starting pitcher Cody Adams scattered 11 hits over five innings and -- thanks to the defense -- put himself in line for his first Midwest League victory.

Kemp drove in his fourth run of the game with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth. A throwing error in the sixth allowed another Rattler run to score.

Wisconsin relievers Wily Peralta and Jim Henderson took over from there. Peralta allowed one hit over three scoreless innings. Henderson closed out the Loons with a 1-2-3 ninth for his fifth save.

Wisconsin and Great Lakes play again on Thursday night. Michael Bowman (0-0, 4.00) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Justin Miller (1-1, 4.24) is set to start for the Loons. Game time is 6:35 PM.

Wisconsin Box Score

Great Lakes actually outhit Wisconsin, 11-8, but the Rattler hurlers threw zero walks, a welcome change -- Wisconsin batters drew six; athletic Erik Miller now 7-for-8 in stolen base attempts; Juan Sanchez and Brett Lawrie on base three times apiece (two hits each), as was Shawn Zarraga (three walks)...
