The amazing Caleb Gindl, third in the Florida State league in OPS entering Sunday, hits a two-run blast in the 1st inning -- nice.

I love that little guy. Hope he can prove the naysayers wrong.

I really have a good feeling about him. They say he doesn't have the power for a corner, but I think this could be one where the brewer scouts were ahead of the curve. IIRC, he was an early pick, and he's done nothing but produce so far. Brian Giles part II

I've liked him from the start, had he been taller he may have been drafted as a pitcher and he likely would have drafted in the 2nd round. He's shown enough power out there to be at least an average player at the corners and above average in CF. We read positive comments on his defense from people that watch him but I haven't seen anything concrete from the organization or scouts recently.

Miranda walked 3 times so far today, impressive... I hope I don't offend Farris' relatives, coaches, etc... but other than a nice end to the season last year, he certainly hasn't been all that impressive. Does he at least flash the leather?

edit. What's gotten into Mercedes this season? He's been a pleasant surprise.

edit2. Lucroy pushes his average up to .300 again today, now if he'll start hitting for some power again... a sub .400 SLG isn't where he should be. Brewer should start flashing some power as well, his SLG is lower than his OBP, hopefully it doesn't stay that way for long.

Gindl is doing great, but I don't know if I would compare him to Brian Giles. Giles showed amazing plate discipline from the very start of his professional career. Gindl draws walks, but he strikes out much, much more than Giles ever did. Giles has performed at pretty much a HOF-caliber level throughout much of his career, if Gindl does that I will be in heaven.

That said, I get that you're comparing the fact that they are of a similar stature.

Just curious, but are there any naysayers regarding Gindl? I don't remember reading any from the beginning.
Here, or in general? In general, there were/are lots. 5'9" corner outfielders don't get a lot of respect.

IIRC the knock on him is that he is a tweener. defensively he belongs at a corner, but offensively he profiles better in center. I believe he can develop into an average offensive corner OF, with above average defense. Not sure on the D, but that they've tried him in CF tells me he should be above average in a corner.

Cody may force his way up to AAA at the break the way he's going. It wouldn't hurt my feelings if Braddock comes back in the next 2 weeks either.

Mercedes had a 60/6 K/BB ratio in 53 innings as a reliever last season at West Virginia so he's kind of picking up where he left off. Check out his second half numbers from last season on minorleaguesplits.com, they're pretty darn good. It appears that he's found the bullpen to his liking.

Final: Iowa 3, Nashville 0

Nashville Site Game Summary

Sounds Blanked By I-Cubs, 3-0 Date Posted: 4/26/2009

NASHVILLE - Iowa starter Esmailin Caridad worked seven scoreless innings and combined with a pair of relievers on a three-hit, 3-0 shutout of the Nashville Sounds on Sunday afternoon at Greer Stadium.

Caridad (3-1) picked up his third win in four outings this season for the I-Cubs with his solid effort, his first quality start of the year. He allowed three hits, walked two batters, and struck out five.

Kevin Hart and Chad Fox followed with a scoreless inning each to close out the shutout, with Fox picking up his second save by retiring the Sounds in order in the ninth.

It was a pitcher's duel for much of the early afternoon as Caridad and Nashville starter Chase Wright kept the opposition, allowing only three hits apiece through the game's first six innings.

Iowa broke the scoreless deadlock in the top of the seventh when catcher Chris Robinson (2-for-4) belted his first home run of the season, a three-run shot to left off Wright. Jake Fox (walk) and Brad Snyder (double) also scored on the blast, which gave the visitors a 3-0 advantage.

Nashville third baseman Mat Gamel produced two of the club's three hits on the day, including his team-leading seventh double of the year. Joe Koshansky doubled to account for Nashville's other knock.

Wright (1-2) took the loss for the Sounds despite working a quality start for the second straight outing. He allowed three runs on five hits over 6 1/3 innings of work.

Reliever Juan Sandoval made his Sounds debut in the contest and worked 1 2/3 scoreless frames, striking out a pair of batters.

Nashville centerfielder Tony Gwynn had his PCL-best 15-game hitting streak come to a close with an 0-for-4 afternoon.

The teams continue the series with a 6 p.m. contest on Monday night at Greer. Right-hander Nick Green (1-1, 4.24) will man the bump for Nashville to face Iowa right-hander Randy Wells (2-0, 2.65).

Nashville Box Score

As noted in the game recap, Gamel had two of the three hits for the Sounds, including his seventh double of the year. With only nine hits and three walks combined between the two teams, it's easy to understand why this game was over in two hours and 14 minutes.

Nashville Game Log

The Sounds ruin a good opportunity to score in the second inning. I'm not sure why Iribarren would bunt, or be asked to bunt, with really only one chance to score runs with the pitchers' spot coming up after Gillespie. After that, the team only musters a single by Gamel and a walk by Iribarren.

Final: Huntsville 3, Chattanooga 1

Huntsville Site Game Summary

Sterling Sunday Pitching Peformance by Stars MiLB.com

Chris Cody spun six solid innings and Derrick Ellison worked three shutout innings in relief to close out Huntsville's 3-1 win over Chattanooga Sunday afternoon in the second of a five-game set at AT&T Field. The Stars won their fourth in a row to improve to 10-7 and remain in first place in the North Division, while the Lookouts lost an eighth straight to fall to 3-14 and seven games behind. The Stars have won nine times by either a run or two and 15 of their 17 games have been decided by three runs or less.

Cody tripled with one out in the third and scored when Adam Stern followed with a single to give the Stars a 1-0 lead and extend his hitting streak to eight games. The three-base hit by Cody was the first hit for the Stars' pitching staff this season. The Lookouts tied the game in the fourth when Justin Sellers was hit by a pitch, moved to third base on a double by Andrew Lambo and scored on a Josh Bell ground out.

Drew Anderson walked with two outs in the sixth before Vinny Rottino kept the inning going with a looping infield single behind first base. Johnny Raburn then walked to load the bases before Chuck Caufield delivered a line drive single to left field to deliver Anderson and Rottino with the decisive runs and knock Mudcats' starter Tim Corcoran out of the contest. The veteran right-hander took the loss after allowing three runs on six hits, while walking five and striking out three. Matt Sartor and Paul Koss tossed 3 1/3 scoreless innings and combined to set down the final nine Huntsville hitters.

Cody retired the last nine batters he faced to close his performance. The southpaw wound up yielding just two hits, did not walk a batter and fanned five to grab the win for a second straight start. Ellison retired the side in order in the seventh, struck out Sellers with two runners on to end the eighth and retired Russ Mitchell on a fly ball to end the game with a runner on board. The southpaw has thrown 6 1/3 scoreless innings in three outings on the road trip to earn his first double-A win and first save at the double-A level.

The series continues Monday night with southpaw Bobby Bramhall taking the hill against Lookouts' right-hander Josh Lindblom. Coverage of the game begins at 6:00 pm central time and can be heard through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Huntsville Box Score

As already noted by others above, Chris Cody is really off to a fine start, following up a very strong season a year ago with Brevard County and then in the HWB. He helps his own cause today with a triple and a run scored in the third inning, the first run scored in the game.

Huntsville Game Log

The Stars had a few other really good chances to score runs in both the second and fourth innings, and fortunately they didn't need any more runs in this low scoring affair. As noted in the game summary above, the Stars have been playing close games all season long.
