Might make sense... Brewers/Devil Rays

I was just thinking that if the Brewers brass believe in Tony Gwynn Jr. hitting it might allow the Brewers to move Billy Hall to a team that could use him as a 3B or SS where he is more. What about a Hall and Mench for Carl Crawford deal? Tampa Bay gets a above average SS and a good OFer/DH and Milwaukee gets a leadoff hitter and allows Gwynn to play. What do you think?

I'd rather not do this as I feel Crawford is overrated, especially as a corner OF. As a CF, he'd be OK, but he rarely plays there for some reason. Hall's career numbers are better and Hall gives you that added versatility.

Crawford is younger, but only by 2 years. I don't think the upgrade in stolen bases would be worth the hassle and whatever else the Brewers would likely have to throw in.

the reason Crawford doesn't play CF is cause of the amount of young OFs that Tampa has. Baldelli has been pencilled in there the last few years (witholding injuries).

I'm not saying I'd give the farm for Crawford, but if a Hall and Mench for Crawford deal could be worked out, I'd do that in a heartbeat. Crawford is a 5 tool player whose power numbers have increased each year he's been in the league. He is a special player.

I would not do that deal. We would loose power to gain speed with this trade, makes no sense unless team is banking on Braun to come and start pumping the ball out of the park.

Hall is only an above average SS when it comes to his stick, his defense is average at best in that spot.D-Ray would likely looking for more in a trade.

When has the front office come out and stated that Gwynn was a future starter??

Crawford Career HR/SLG/OPS

2002 - 2/.371/.661

2003 - 5/.362/.671

2004 - 11/.450/.781

2005 - 15/.469/.800

2006 - 18/.482/.830

2007 - 5/.494/.868

Bill Hall Career HR/SLG/OPS

2002 - 1/.361/.618

2003 - 5/.458/.756

2004 - 9/.374/.650

2005 - 17/.495/.837

2006 - 35/.553/.899

2007 - 6/.451/.783

It seems to me that Crawford is getting better and better each year. Hall is kinda doing the same, but he seems more up and down that Crawford. I just don't think we would be losing that much power.

Hall is just as good a hitter as Crawford, and the D-Rays have outstanding 3B and SS prospects playing well at AA, Evan Longoria and Reid Brignac. The D-Rays focus continues to be finding competant pitching.

it would make sense for the brewers. the brewers have no logical lead-off hitter other than gwynn. Weeks bats lead-off, but tha t position is not reall y where he should be batting. Soriano shouldn't be a lead -off hitter either. but the Cubs are stupid.

i like Crawford. always have. always will.

i wouldn't trade hall because he's slumping. i'd trade hall because we're getting somebody very good in return.

A lot of people hated trading porter and lezcano away. but we got Fingers and Simmons in return. Sometimes, both teams win in a trade.

I doubt Tampa bay would see hall as their future CF, SS or 3B. but they have some outfield slots, and they have a dh slot.

Weeks, Gross and Hart are all better options to leadoff than Gwynn, IMO.

There is nothing wrong with Weeks batting first. As long as he carries a high OBP, 20-some HRs out of the leadoff spot is totally acceptable, it should be a goal.

Fans love Billy, and that will never change no matter how bad he plays.

I wouldn't say that. There's definitely still haters, and they usually come out of the woodwork when he slumps for a week.

And the last thing that needs to be taken into consideration is what fans think of a player.

weeks gross and hart may all be better than gwynn as lead-off hitters, but gross is a bench player. In their prime, Weeks and hart should be batting lower in the order.

Molitor started out hitting lead-off. In his prime, he shifted down to third. Robbie Alomar did the same. it would be nice if Weeks were able to follow in the path of those two second baseman and come close t o their accomplishments..

I stil l say Soriano should not be leading off.

last year, crawford batted some lead-off and he batted some in the third position. If traded for hall, i could see crawford batting first or third this year.

i find it hard to believe Crawford is 2 years younger than hall, yet people still prefer the homegrown hall.

I am saddened the biggest complaint against trying to acquire Crawford is that his contract is shorter and he gets paid more. I am saddened brewers fans always have to be practical and look to their pocketbook first before evaluating any trade proposal. and then say, we can't afford him.

the only negative about crawford is his contract. For what he does, he's a bargain

I have a dream that some day brewers fan will no longer discriminate against players because of their contract demands. I have a dream that one day the Brewers can afford to go after whomever they please and the contract money talks be dammed.

that is my dream, my hope, my quest!
