Bill Hall, Gold Glove?

silversurferr
Bill has been spectacular in the field so far this year. So far, I have seen at least three web-gems; fielding a bunt then firing a dart to second to nab the runner; Diving stab then throwing from his knees to get the runner; the play down the line to temporarily preserve Bush's no-hitter. All three were late game situations. I do not think he has any errors, and I have only seen one missed play. Gamel better start working on chasing flies.

I think the whole team has been pretty good in the field. Weeks looks a lot better and even Prince has scooped a few balls out of the dirt. It might be the most improved area on the team so far. With Hall I think playing one spot for a whole year has to be helpful. The only other time he looked decent in the field was when he played short all year.
There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

Hall is pretty terrible at getting to line drives which almost always get by him. I'd say he has been pretty close to average to maybe a tiny bit above verage overall at 3B this year though it is a 'flashy' average. Guys like Feliz and Zimmerman are better fielders and someone like Wright with the reputation and east coast big market background is more likely to win it.

edit: I looked up some numbers, Hall has been just slightly better than average according to the numbers so far, however he was at like -10 UZR/150 after the first week so he has made up ground lately. The team in general is #2 in baseball so far with only Fielder being below replacement(though I agree he has looked good this past week too).

The play Hall made in Bush's no-hit attept was as good as any play I've seen a 3B make. Hall is definately benifitting from losing the weight he lost this past offseason, and he looks like a guy who could easily play SS right now. Hall hadn't had alot of experience at 3B, and its a position where you need experience to quicken the reaction time.

Hall should be considered for the gold glove, and highlight reel plays like the one thursday will get him into the discussion.

My brother said last year the Mets' announcers raved about Hall, and compared him to Brooks Robinson. If they see Wright every day and said that, he's got a shot.

Nothing would help Hall's trade value than raising his OBP a bit and winning a meaningless defensive award.

Wow, Mets announcers raving about Hall. And they see Wright everyday. That is crazy. No doubt though Hall has been fantastic on D so far this year. Some of the bar hand plays he has made have been off the charts.

I have always believed familiarity breeds contempt. We are always harder on our own players. We watch them all the time and see their flaws. No doubt the same is true for Mets fans and broadcasters.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

I thought it was Fielders inability to scoop a throw that jinxed him.

No way in heck, that was 100% Hall. The ball bounced in front of 1B and was so far off line Fielder would have had to taken at least 2 steps off of 1B just to straighten up on it. Fielder gets way too much blame for horrible throws like that. Sure some 1B make that play sometimes but that is a throw that any 1B in baseball can miss.

Not saying you should expect Prince to pick that for the out, but what he needs to do there IS to come off the bag and keep that runner at 3rd
Maybe but it was the last out of the game, Berkman was hobbling, it was a bang bang play, Hall has been amazing defensively lately. All signs point towards hang at 1B as far as I'm concerned. It is distrurbing to me that on a play like this that was so over the top Hall's fault gets blamed on Fielder who at most made the wrong choice between try to stop the terrible throw and hope he could dig out an off line throw that was bounced way in front of the bag.

There is no way that the error should be blamed on anyone but Hall. It takes a normal throw for it to be an out, it takes an amazing scoop to make it an out, it takes a split second decision to hop off the bag to block the bad throw.

I agree it was Hall's E all the way. Real bad time for his first error and just a real bad throw. He should have just cut it loose instead of trying to goose it over there. I have a feeling that if you ask Prince he would say that when you see the throw is going to be that poor the most important thing would be to make sure you know the ball down in that particular situation, kind of like a catcher blocking a breaking ball in the dirt with the tying or go ahead run at 3rd. But who knows. Prince does seem to be catching a bit too much flak on this one. It probably didn't help that he looked pretty ugly in his attempt

I think you're greatly exagerrating how bad of a throw that was. I agree, the blame should be placed on Hall for that, but if Fielder would've put his left foot on the base, he could've kept his foot on the base and gotten in front of the ball to keep it from bouncing away. The Astros broadcast had a great replay of this right behind first base.
