Heading to STL for series

Recommended Posts

Big Bang, It's a piano bar that is a blast. The Bowling Hall of Fame is right across the road from Busch so if your looking to bowl a couple of bowls you would want to head there. Taking a tour of Busch Stadium or Budweiser is always fun. There's a couple of bars right around the stadium that are always a good time. The one I would recommend is Al Hrabosky's Saloon always filled with a lot of baseball fans. If your looking for a good steak I would say Shannon's Steak right downtown...

I was at New Busch in Sept of '07. It was cool. I personally thought Miller Park was better, but there was a lot of untapped potential. At the time there were a lot of open concourse areas that might be filled now. I sat in the bleachers almost directly down the RF line and had a pretty good view. Outside the stadium is pretty cool. I'd walk around a little bit before going in. Their hot dogs were pretty good. Depending where you are before wanting to go to the game, taking their train system is probably the easiest. Drops you off like 5 feet from the stadium and only costs like a buck or two to ride round trip. Its a pretty cool place, you'll have fun.

great place for breakfast or lunch is Ed's Chili Mac, it's about 10 blocks from Busch on Pine st downtown. It's an old school diner type of place that we make sure to hit at least once every trip to St Louis. I'm pretty sure they are only open till 1 or 2 in the afternoon.
Everything I've ever known, I've learned from Brewerfan.net....Seriously though

If you like Italian, head to the Hill. Its a cab ride from downtown, but the food is outstanding and there are a lot of little neighborhood bars. We ate at Charlie Gitto's and it was maybe the best Italian I've ever had at a restaurant.

Gitto's is definitely very good. My wife and I went there for V-Day and it was great. There are a bunch of great places on the Hill including a place called Zia's which is a little more casual.

If you are a BBQ guy I would highly recommend Pappy's Smokehouse. It's a bit off the beaten path, but it's only a few miles north east of the stadium. http://www.pappyssmokehouse.com/

Before the game, I would recommend going to the Hilton or Mike Shannon's Steakhouse which are both two blocks north of the stadium and have some nice outdoor bars.

Also, be forewarned. People around here are nice but they still have a bug up their butt about the whole untuckem/Braun staring/Hall spitting series last year.

I know it may be blasphemous, but I think Busch Stadium is spectacular -- way better than Miller Park. It's gorgeous and my absolute favorite stadium in baseball. I was there for that hideous series in July 2007. The fans were very nice, but I'd imagine they won't be so gracious this time around.

The Budweiser tour center was packed the couple of times I've been in St. Louis. I don't know if it's worth the wait, but I'm sure it's fun.

I had just the opposite experience at Busch. Two years ago, we saw beer bottles being thrown at Brewer fans holding up a sign. The security personnel saw it as well, but instead of dealing with the bottle-throwers, they told the Brewer fans to calm down or get ejected.

I've been there several times and found the idea of "highly-informed" Cardinal fans greatly overstated. The ones that come to Miller Park are generally nice, but in StL it's a different story.

The fact that they're upset about the untuckem thing is kind of funny, since there is a way to prevent that - win. Also because Pujols is one of the cockiest players in the league.

Edit (with a thought related to the thread) - there are riverboats there as well if you want to gamble. I think they recently built a casino downtown as well.

mickeydavis, i don't remember the name, but it is along beyond the outfield, it is within walking distance of the stadium, and most of the players walk to the stadium...autograph collectors love st. louis, because almost everyone signs as they make the trek to the stadium, if you would like me to find more info on the hotel, i can ask around on another message board if you are interested, but if anyone is looking to get autographs, that is a great place to do it...

Yeah I think that's the Hilton. The Westin is right there too but on the other side of the stadium. Thinking about taking my son (14) on a mini road trip. Leave early Friday morning, take in the Friday and Saturday games and then head back.

American Airlines has some cheap flights that weekend and the bonus is that they are the only airline that flies direct. I'm going to the Saturday and Sunday game and I got a round trip for $148 (tax included). Fly out Saturday morning at 6:00 am and fly back on Sunday at 8:45 pm. Has anybody taken the light rail from the airport to the stadium stop?

I usually have a lot of respect for Cardinals fans. The ones I've met have been very knowledgeable, and there is a certain camraderie to be found in hating the same cursed team from the North Side of Chicago.

I sat close to a Cardinal's fan on a tour bus to Washington D.C., he was actually born and raised not far from where I was from in Iowa. We talked about things and people from Iowa, and places. We all knew each other's areas well, the Cards fan even knew about my family's bakery in Storm Lake, IA. It was a very odd meeting of circumstances and timing, meeting randomly on a tour bus in D.C.

It was fun to talk to him about baseball, because he loathed the Cubs even more than I. And I really, REALLY hate the Cubs.

And Blanco forgot to tell you that you can have chili on your breakfast (and pretty much anything on the menu), sound weird, but it's really good. Nightlife, head down to Lanclades Landing. Kind of like a State Street area, but no shops. Just lot's of bars, and a casino. We've stayed at the Sheraton, and the Crown Plaza down there, and they were both really nice. We booked on Hotwire.com, and just chose hotels that were 3.5 stars and above in the downtown area. like 75-80 a night, and they were really nice hotels. As far as Pregame, gotta hit up Mike Shannons. Really cool, open air bar.

It's an easy ride, and convenient, but way too long. Be prepared for train delays. Cab fare is around 35 dollars flat rate, might be your best option.

Tristar:

You could try the Metrolink-Fairview Heights stop. It's on the Illinois side not too far from the I-255/I-64 interchange, but I don't know how close it is to where you're staying. Its address is: 9200 St. Clair Ave - Fairview Heights, IL 62208.

I stayed on the Illinois side before and used the Metrolink from there to get back and forth from the Convention Center, which is two stops away from Busch. The ride wasn't terribly long. Nothing seemed questionable. There was a nice, big parking lot. And it seemed safe, even when getting back late at night.

Maybe someone else from the STL area has another idea, but that's my best guess based on previous experiences and having relatives down there.
