Is Melky Cabrera a premium prospect....

There has been a lot of talk about the Brewers maybe go after an outfield bat.

I don't think I like overpaying both with top end prospects or dollars for a high profile guy.

The Yanks are desperate for pitching and Cabrera is 23 and is a switch hitter, but I will be honest with you I don't know how good he was when the Yankees rushed him to majors 3 seasons ago.

Does he have the potential to be a better run producer than Mench?

Not to hi-jack the thread, but where did you hear that the Brewers were going after an outfield bat? We've got 6 good MLB outfielders now, with Nix trapped in AAA.

I agree with the NYC hype notion. Cabrera seems quite average.

i think the outfield talks comes from the idea that it is the plaqce the brewers could improve...

jenkins is playing well this year, but only against righties

hall has been pretty good in center

mench sucks

and the other three have been up and down...

i think a lot of people think you could bring in a star outfielder and let him play in front of the young guys for the rest of the year, and then he walks...

or, you get a star type guy with a few years on his contract and you let jenkins walk...

fielder, weeks, hardy, and braun are entrenched...the outfield still has some wiggle room, even if the brewers do have 6 mlb capable guys on the roster

The production in the Brewer outfield is not very good right now.

They have 6 OFs, all of them except Hall and Jenkins are "enormous" questions marks.

I like Hart but Ned seems to be like you. He thinks having guys like Gross, Gwynn and Mench are an excuse not to have a regular OF. The 3 are OK 4th and 5th OFs and apsre bats but giving them significant ABs is a killer.

THe OF is average to below average right now.

Adding a bat could help a great deal.

No, he's not a premium prospect. He's like Gwynn but a little better, since he has had a decent full season in the big leagues, and he's two years younger. But he's pretty much a guy with decent patience, no pop, and above average defense in the corner spots.

I wouldn't want him, I think he'd be the 6th best OF on the team right now, better than only Gwynn.

Melky Cabrera is not a top prospect at all. I remeber when he came up how surprised people like Gammons and Kurkjian were that the Yankees were considering Melky for the big leagues. That being said, he has shown some pretty decent potential in his time in the majors. He would look nice as a defensive replacement.
