Yankees need an OF?

It looks like the Xavier Nady might be done for the year, as he possibly needs surgery. Just wondering if there could be some trade possibility here. Maybe the Brewers could swing an OF for a starting pitcher (which is seems like we could use).

Any ideas?

Do the Brewers have an OF to spare better than what the Yankees already have? The Yankees actually had a OF surplus with 3 starting corner OF of Damon, Nady and Swisher, with Gardner and Cabrera getting starts in CF. Now it means Swisher is a full time OF and Melky is the 4th OF who presumably gets spot starts at the corner.

Sure, the Yankees would benefit from Cameron over their CF now, but I think that would be throwing in the towel for the Brewer season this year, as I don't see any return coming back that equals Cameron's production. The start was tough, and the Brewers will certainly be pressed to make a run at the playoffs, but it's too early to give up on the season.

A Gillespie for Kennedy/Hughes wouldn't be a bad trade just not something I would like to do. It does though give the Brewers a #5 starter to throw in if Suppan continues to do what he has been doing.

I wonder if Kennedy's and Hughes stock has fallen enough for a Gillespie for Kennedy/Hughes trade. I do believe Kennedy/Hughes need to be traded in order for them to have success in the majors. I would take Kennedy over Hughes way to many question marks about Hughes compared to Kennedy. I believe Kennedy to be a Dave Bush type of a pitcher.

If those were my 2 choices I'd take hughes, I like his secondary numbers and stuff better than Kennedy.

I'd be really pleasantly surprised if Gillespie could even get us close to getting Hughes.

[Melky Cabrera getting spot starts at the corners is] enough to make any GM cringe

His defense is a plus at any of the three OF spots, so it's not like you get no value from him. However, I agree his bat is inadequate at the corner OF spots.

Yeah, I don't like his bat in cf let alone left. (Melky)

And if we could get Hughes or Kennedy for Gillespie I'd be all over that. We have much more of a need for young SP than we do RH outfielders likely limited to LF. I don't think he's a sexy enough name though for the Yankees to value him enough to give up either of those guys for him.

That's enough to make any GM cringe.

That's obviously true. The question posted was do the Brewers have a match to make the Yankees OF better than it is now. Who would the Brewers give up that is so much better than Melky that the Yankees would trade something of value to get? I don't think Gwynn is better, if he is, certainly not enough that the Yankees would give up anything to acquire.

If the Yankees think they need another OF, they are much more likely to sign Edmonds or Jenkins before they give up talent for a minor league player.

Hughes is back on the NY good side after the spring. He's an injury away from being on the starting rotation. Barring that, he'll be there next year. If we're going to target someone, it would have to be Kennedy. I don't see Hughes being moved for anything but top tier talent.
