April / May / June Transaction Thread

Mass Haas
I came across the 9th rounder, Pokorny in the Salt Lake City airport today. Saw a bit guy in a Brewers hat with Kent state on his backpack and went up and introduced myself, wishing him luck. Turns out the guy two infront of him in line for the Helena flight was also with the Brewers (based on his hat). He was roughly 3-4 inches taller than Pokorny and had sort of blond wavy hair. He appeared to also be a college player, based on his physical maturity. Both also carried laptops. I'm in MT now and may try to get to opening night

In addition, the Brewers have signed at least two undrafted free agents, and we hope to have info on those players soon.
Mitch Miller is a senior RHP from Jacksonville State (Donovan Hand was his teammate there). His career stats are unencouraging, and he posted a 6.37 ERA with a 13/12 K/BB and 43 hits allowed in 29.2 innings this year (four starts/16 relief appearances). Michael Marseco should thank him for contributing to his 1076 OPS at Samford last year.

Connor Lind is a senior SS from Furman University. His best year was his junior year, when he hit .322/.406/.367, but he slumped to .263/.315/.293 this year. His profile says he "possesses good range, consistent glove, and fine arm". He's from Chicago.

Maybe Mitch will organize a Brewer farmhand choral group?

That's one for the older fans out there.

It wouldn't hurt my feelings if all of the draft picks in the first 5 rounds signed this week and were ready for the start of rookie ball.

Good place to remind you that more so than any other year (and we've had some good ones), we've been able to provide non-stop links and updates in our Draft Forum, thanks to the work by staff here and several of our most dedicated readers and posters.

All the pinned "discussion" threads are chock-full of newspaper reports about the Brewer draftees, both pre- and post-draft, including informative articles about whether some "on-the-fence" players will sign or if they are being monitored by the Brewers this summer before a formal contract is offered.

And a must-see resource is the Official Draft Pick Selection / Signing Thread, with individual links to each draftee's post including colbyjack's scouting reports all available within the very first post. The articles in the discussion threads are conveniently linked within the player's individual "official" post.

It can't be easier for you to learn about the new draftees. Enjoy, and good luck to all the kids.

From Brian Massey, Huntsville's Director, Media & Public Relations:

The Milwaukee Brewers and the Huntsville Stars announced today that RHP Juan Sandoval has been reinstated from the 7-Day Disabled List. In a related move, RHP Josh Butler has been assigned to Helena.

Both moves are effective immediately, and Sandoval will be in uniform tonight as the Stars face the Birmingham Barons.

Butler's move a paper transaction, you folks know the drill on that.

I get the reference. Would you believe the Van Dyke-bearded one is still alive and living on the Cayman Islands? He's upwards of 92 now.

First, let's dispense with the paper moves -- at Huntsville, RHP's Josh Butler and Mark Holliman swap places on and off Helena's roster, respectively.

In a move that seems a bit confusing, 22-year-old catcher Martin Maldonado and 40-man roster catcher Carlos Corporan, 25, swap places with Maldonado going to Nashville and Corporan to Brevard County. The move does make sense if it's about getting Corporan more consistent AB's.

When Maldonado appears in a game, it will be his first at AAA. He was on the Sounds roster for two days in April of '08, but did not play.

Maybe he is getting some ABs as a precursor to a MLB callup? Replacing Rivera? Just speculation, but it seems that someone doesn't like Rivera much (i.e. Kendall struggling at the plate and Rivera still doesn't get more ABs).

Huntsville GM Buck Rogers informed Huntsville fans --

On a sad note today, outfielder Drew Anderson's mother passed away last night. The entire Huntsville Stars extended family - from players and coaches to the staff to the fans that support this team every day - send our deepest condolences to the Anderson family. You're all in our thoughts and prayers.

Obviously those sentiments are extended from everyone here associated with Brewerfan, including all our readers, we're sure. Look for Drew to be away for as long as he needs, perhaps we'll see a formal assignment to the temporary inactive list at some point to free up a roster spot, but that is so truly insignificant when you learn about something like this. God Bless the Anderson family at this time.

The Timber Rattlers have placed RHP Cody Adams, the Brewers 2nd round pick in 2008, on the disabled list. There's been no official word on the nature of his injury, perhaps it will be disclosed the next time Adam McCalvy gets to review minor league happenings with Gord Ash or Reid Nichols.

For the time being, Wisconsin's roster remains one short of the limit, a situation that will likely be rectified Wednesday.

LHP Zach Braddock has indeed been promoted to AA Huntsville, and joining him from Brevard is closer supreme Rob Wooten.

Talk about a brief AA stay, fireballing reliever John Axford gets bumped to AAA Nashville, just one step away from Milwaukee. Congrats to all!

RHP and 40-man roster spot holder Omar Aguilar gets dropped to high-A Brevard County, where hopefully he'll post some consistent outings right away.

30-year-old LH reliever Derrick Ellison, (career stats at link) the long-time indy baller plucked from those ranks last season, was released. A very brief stint in the Mariners' system was surrounded by years of perseverence in the indy ranks. We wish Derrick well.

Yesterday June 23rd, OF Drew Anderson was placed on the temporarily inactive list, as was anticipated.

RHP Mark Holliman re-joins Huntsville in a paper move from Helena.

Tom Haudricourt updated his readers on Chris Duffy, who has been on the Temporary Inactive List since June 3rd:

Centerfielder Chris Duffy, assigned outright to Class AAA Nashville on May 26, has been placed on that club's inactive list. Duffy went home to Arizona for the birth of a child after playing three games with Nashville and never rejoined the club. Brewers assistant general manager Gord Ash said Duffy's absence was "a delicate issue" that he could not detail. "All I can tell you is he's dealing with some personal issues," said Ash, who did not know when Duffy might return.

Once again, and understandably, life trumps baseball.

Baseball America reports that Pedro Lambertus was reinstated after his PED suspension.

He still has the 10 games the team added on to the league imposed 50 games right?

Also, Baseball America is reporting that Jose Romero was reinstated from the DL. I had forgotten he was a part of the system. Any idea on where he is to report?

Since the just turned 23-year-old lefty missed all of last season, we'll probably see his name initially with the Maryvale kids. Looks like a box score to be determined will let us know...

Another alternative for closing games has arrived in Brevard County.

26-year-old RHP Jim Henderson gets the needed bump from Wisconsin to Brevard County. Job well done, sir, protecting leads for the young Timber Rattlers during the first half. We'll see how duties are shared on the Manatees with Omar Aguilar or others.

Closing duties in Wisconsin (Rigo Almonte?) would appear to be wide open for now. The Rattlers should announce a backfill on Thursday the latest.
