April / May / June Transaction Thread

First, a link to the offseason / spring training transaction thread --

I was about to post to our Alumni thread that former Brewer outfielder Drew Anderson had been released by Cincinnati.

David Wesier passes along a note from Huntsville --

Charlie Fermaint has been released in the first roster move of the Stars' season. Fermaint was 0-for-10 w/3 strikeouts and hit into a force in the 11th inning of Tuesday night's game against Mississippi, leaving a pair on base. Fillling the roster spot is Drew Anderson, who hit .291 in a full season with the Stars in 2006 and spent some time in 2007. He spent the 2008 season in Cincinnati's organization, giving them two Drew Andersons. That should end the confusion there, maybe. Drew, who agreed to terms on a new minor league contract, will be in uniform for the Stars Wednesday night.

Fermaint left 6 on base in the 5 games he appeared.

From Chris Mehring, voice of the Rattlers --

Just got these:

OF Erik Komatsu placed on the disabled list (retroactive to 4/13)

RHP Garrett Sherrill placed on the disabled list (retroactive to 4/15)

C Corey Kemp activated from the DL

LHP Brian Meadows activated from the DL

Both Kemp and Meadows are eligible for tonight's game.

As a note to head off any questions, please don't ask me why this player is going on the DL or what was wrong with this other player. If the team tells me that I can release any of that information, I will do it in the release. If they tell me not to, I won't.

Huntsville Press Release:

The Milwaukee Brewers and Huntsville Stars announced today that RHP Omar Aguilar has been activated from the disabled list. In a corresponding move, RHP Mark Holliman has been placed on the 7-day DL. Both moves are effective immediately, and Aguliar will be in uniform for today's game against the Mississippi Braves.

Wow, Holliman pitched so well just last night. No word on the nature of his injury. Perhaps we'll learn more in today's Huntsville webcast. Nice to have Omar active, though.

Holliman's time with the organization looks to be pretty limited, the A+ rotation is going to pretty crowed when Braddock comes off the DL and there are some young arms at A ball that may get a mid season bump.

The Nashville media notes indicates that the Brewers have signed 28-year-old catcher Patrick Arlis, a long-time Marlin farmhand who played independent ball in 2008 (career stats at link).

For now, he is on the Temporary Inactive List, with an assignment pending after spending some time in Maryvale, most likely. No idea what's in store or what's pending for players like J.R. Hopf or Anderson Delarosa, it's probably unfair to toss those names out there, but they occupy roles where Arlis would eventually plug in.

Baseball America details Charlie Fermaint's departure:

The Brewers cut ties with Fermaint, their fourth-round pick in '03 from Puerto Rico, because for all his athleticism, he batted just .212/.277/.305 in 452 at-bats last season with high Class A Brevard County. He contributed 22 doubles and 27 stolen bases (in 37 attempts), but struck out 99 times and walked just 36 times. And the lack of production wasn't an aberration. In three attempts at the Florida State League, the 23-year-old Fermaint mustered a line of .238/.301/.336 in 279 games.

In today's moves:

The Brewers have placed Stars OF Freddy Parejo on the DL retro to April 18th with an undisclosed injury. OF Lorenzo Cain (hamstring)has been activated from the DL.

Chris Mehring with roster updates in Wisconsin (Merklinger to DL, Dabrowiecki up)

Kris Dabrowiecki is 23, so the time is right for the call-up. He'll be making his pro debut. Canadian kid, but Northeastern University (Boston) product.

We saw that Dan Merklinger injured his leg making a play off the mound last week, hopefully nothing serious for the lefty.

More details on the earlier transaction from the Calgary Vipers (independent Golden Baseball League site):

The Calgary Vipers have graduated their first player to the Triple-A ranks. Workhorse catcher Patrick Arlis has left the Snakes for the AAA-Nashville Sounds, the Pacific Coast League affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers. "We hate to lose a player of Patrick's ability", said Vipers Director of Baseball Operations Peter Young. "But after talking with Gord Ash and the Brewers scouting staff we realized this was an incredible opportunity for Pat. He wants to get into coaching in the near future and this is a step in the door for him". Arlis started 78 of the Vipers 84 games in 2008 and all eight in the playoffs. He hit .273 with 7 home runs and 42 runs batted in.

So we'll see what happens here, will Arlis take an occasional start from Angel Salome and Carlos Corporan, not to mention a Sounds roster spot? In the big picture, this means little, but we'll see how it all plays out when Arlis is eventually activated.

Outfielder Cole Gillespie has officially been transferred from Brevard to AAA Nashville.

To fill the spot at high-A, just-turned 21-year-old catcher Brett Whiteside has been activated from the seven-day DL. It'll be interesting to see how catcher duties are shared at Brevard.

For more details on recent moves, see Adam McCalvy's blog entry here.

Here's a new update included at the link above --

Gord Ash said the Sounds were poised to place left-hander Sam Narron on the seven-day disabled list with a sore elbow. Ash spoke Thursday morning with Triple-A trainer Jeff Paxson, who expects Narron to miss only a week or so. To fill the spot, Double-A closer Juan Sandoval was promoted to Nashville.

RHP Mark Holliman is making a quick return from the Huntsville DL, and will be activated prior to his scheduled Friday start in Carolina.

This fills the open Huntsville spot that was created when RHP Juan Sandoval was bumped up to AAA this week.

From the Appleton Post-Crescent Blog:

The Rattlers announced two transactions prior to the game as determined by the Brewers. Right-hander Pedro Lambertus was transferred to the Helena (Mont.) roster, while fellow right-hander Garrett Sherrill was activated from the disabled list. Lambertus is 0-1 this season with one save and a 4.91 ERA in three relief appearances spanning 3 2/3 innings.

It certainly seems more of a roster crunch than a performance issue for Lambertus. He'll be back.

News from the Stars:

The Milwaukee Brewers announced yesterday that Stars OF Lorenzo Cain was placed on the 7-day DL. In a corresponding move, the Brewers activated Stars OF Freddy Parejo from the 7-day DL.

We don't know for sure if the hamstring is still barking for Lorenzo. He was hitless in the four games since his arrival from Maryvale. If we learn more, we'll pass on the news.

From the Timber Rattlers:

TRANSACTIONS: The Timber Rattlers have placed infielder John Delaney on the disabled list retroactive to April 26. Infielder Jose Duran has joined the Timber Rattlers in Quad Cities and will be eligible for play tonight.

MEET THE NEW GUY: Duran was a sixth round pick of the Brewers in the 2008 draft out of Texas A&M. He hit .372 and was the Big 12 Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year in 2008. Duran hit .211 in 36 games for Helena in the Pioneer League after signing with the Rattlers. He is the brother of German Duran, who played 60 games for the Texas Rangers in 2008 and is currently playing for the Oklahoma City Red Hawks of the Pacific Coast League.
