Moderators: Can we have a venting forum? / other moderating concerns

Since a venting thread is not allowed for some odd reason, is there a way you can set up a completely different forum outside the Major Leagues forum that can be used for venting? It seems kind of odd that we cannot post what we're thinking/feeling/reacting about how the season is going unless it is positive or backed up by some statistical trends. Thanks.

I like to read the vent thread because I find out that others are just as ticked off as I am. For some reason that lowers my blood pressure after a disturbing loss. Therefore, the vent thread is good for ones health. At least mine!

Why does this impression exist? If you read the Keep Brewerfan Beautiful for 2009, it specifically includes this:

"It's not that we're against posting negative opinions. Discussing the negative is at least as important (and sometimes more important) than discussing the positive. However, members can certainly address the negative without crossing the line into blatant obnoxiousness."

It says explicitly that negative opinions are welcome.

When you're passionate, sometimes you think with your head rather than with your heart. Therefore, I wouldn't mind a vent forum, where people can just blow off steam and make comments without worrying about backing up their negative comments logically.

Well, I think one of the biggest problems with some of the past vent threads was that some people would post the same opinions over and over and over again...it just gets kind of old looking at that sort of thing.

I don't know where I would personally stand on it...sometimes venting can be a relief, but at the same time it got kind of disappointing to see how huge the vent thread was last season when we actually made the playoffs...

How about making it like the "cuss cup"?

Each time you post in the Vent Thread, you add a dollar to the 'Keep Brewerfan.net Alive Fund'

Just not sure if it would cut down on the number of repetitive entries, or if it would result in posters giving Brian their credit card number to start an open tab.

Edit: I didn't mind it from the fact that it may have helped keep the negativity out of multiple other threads, thus making it easier to avoid by just staying away from that thread (but I do understand if the moderators have concerns of it being the largest thread and giving off a generalized negative perception of bf.net posters to the casual observers).

The other thing that got old was the "This should be in the vent thread" type responses to posts in other threads, though. I guess my opinion is that it's good to have done away with it, as long as people can still somewhat vent (if it's not in an obnoxious, repetitive, or stupid fashion).

Open up Notepad, type your vent, close. Problem solved!

Vent threads really don't add anything of merit, other than making people feel good that they can express their overly emotional outbursts in a public place. As has been noted above, we have NEVER discouraged negative posting, just posting (postive or negative) that is completely emotional with no real support or point. Hopefully we're all capable of finding useful ways to blow off steam. Go hit a baseball or something.

If you really want to blow off some steam, go over to the political forum and use the "cussin' corner." People have been known to take out some Brewer-related frustrations there, and obviously you don't have to worry about language. Also, there's often some good (or at least interesting) discussions going on in the other threads.

I understand the intent of the moderators to keep the board free of one line threads that consist of "BOOOOOOOOOOO!!!" but being Brewers fans a lot of us come here to vent and let off some steam. What is the problem with a venting thread or even a venting forum? It doesn't clutter the board; not that there is anything to clutter since there are rarely any new threads on the main board.

Internally, we've (the mods) been talking about the venting thread and agreed to revisit the discussion in a month, to see how things go in April.

If I kill my girlfriend's cats or beat up an elderly person at a bus stop before then, it's on you. I hope all you mods are okay with having that on your conscience...

If I could ask for anything on a new site (or even the current site) it is to please relax the posting rules. This is THE board to talk Brewers baseball, yet on the main forum we've got threads from two days ago on the first page. I for one would like to be able to discuss a game on the main board after it has ended. Discussions on the 10th page of the in-game thread don't really work too well because it's a hodgepodge of topics after a game. For instance, if I want to start a discussion on "Weeks' first two at bats" it ends up buried in between posts about Macha's choice of relievers, a comment on the drunk guy in front of someone at the game and a couple "tomorrow is a must win" posts.

Overall, I think this is a very nice site. The current rules kill more discussions than they help start. Please try not to forget what fan forums and message boards are for.

Thank you!

We've had some internal discussions about relaxing the posting rules, and I think Jamie's going to post something in the coming week about that. Specifically to the IGT's, we're loosening up the rules a smidge, but I would still prefer it if comments about a particular game stay in that thread. I understand that it can be hard to manage sometimes, but speaking from experience, the alternative has sometimes been worse.

I don' tmiss the venting thread at all. I hope it never comes back. It didn't serve it's purpose in my opinion. The venting spilled out across the whole forum instead of being confined to the designated thread. It invited people to come to the forums and vent then move on and vent in another thread instead of bringing well thought out opinions to the discussions.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.
