Turbow... *sigh* there might not be a player I've felt worse for... maybe evah.

Gulin really got knocked around in the 9th in Nashville, that's not something we're used to seeing.

Apparently Jeffress hates the first inning... but otherwise he settled in nicely. Caufield with a very nice night at the plate, Perez is hitting much better in the early going as well. Lucroy hitless tonight as of this post.

Lame rain in BC... I wanted to follow a Rivas start.

Bowman with a decent outing for WI, gives up a walk and then a HR to the next batter (what's going on with that this season?).. Lawrie with another extra base hit... Trejo, Marseco, and Dykstra who bumped his average up a tad tonight (yes X I know he's hurt) are not hitting well to start the season. Dykstra did gun a runner at home to get a DP and keep the game within a run.

just got back from the TRats game.. random thoughts..

Lawrie has a bit of Braun's Miami "swagger". His 2 hits weren't cheapies, they were hard liners towards the gaps.

Dykstra is a smurf. He looks like a little kid out there. Didn't show much pop tonight. Showed off a rocket arm in gunning down a runner tagging 3rd from fairly deep center with a perfect strike to home

Dykstra isn't the tiniest guy on the team.. SS Marseco can't be a buck-fifty.

The pitchers on both sides were throwing some good stuff, but I thought the ump was favoring the visitors. TRats had a hard time finding the strike zone..

The first inning and the third time through the lineup are usually the hardest humps starting pitchers have to get over.

Maybe Jeffress just wants to shutdown all that future closer talk that some of the prospect sites use when talking about him.

Does Jeffress have a pitch count early in the season? It seems like with his number 1 ER over 4 innings could have lead to him pitching longer

RedHawks Unload On Sounds, 12-2

NASHVILLE - The Oklahoma City RedHawks cranked out a season-best 17 hits en route to a 12-2 victory over the Nashville Sounds on Tuesday evening at Greer Stadium in the second game of a four-game series.

The RedHawks received multi-hit efforts from seven different players on the night, led by Royce Huffman (3-for-4) and Esteban German (3-for-5).

For the fifth time in Nashville's six games this season, the opposition struck first as Oklahoma City took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

After the first two batters of the initial frame were retired, Brandon Boggs and Ben Harrison connected for back-to-back two-out doubles off Sounds starter Sam Narron to put the visitors on the board.

The RedHawks doubled the lead in the second when a leadoff walk to Huffman came back to haunt Narron. With one out, Greg Golson singled to move Huffman to second before he came around to score later in the frame on Julio Borbon's two-out RBI single to center to make it a 2-0 contest.

Oklahoma made it a 3-0 game in the sixth against Narron on a Joaquin Arias sacrifice fly.

RedHawks starter Luis Mendoza (1-0) was nearly flawless in his first outing of the season, limiting the Sounds to two hits while striking out six batters over five scoreless innings of work to record the victory.

Nashville took immediate advantage of Mendoza's departure, touching former Sound Derrick Turnbow for a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull within 3-2.

Third baseman Mat Gamel extended his season-opening hit streak to six games by leading off with his fourth double of the season. After moving to third on a Brendan Katin single, Gamel came plateward with the first Sounds run of the evening on Erick Almonte's RBI single to right. Hernan Iribarren followed with a seeing-eye single through the right side of the infield that extended his hit streak to five games and brought home Katin to make it a one-run contest.

The RedHawks bullpen went into lockdown mode following Turnbow's exit, allowing no hits to Nashville batters over the final 3 2/3 frames. Brian Gordon worked 1 2/3 hitless innings before Thomas Diamond and Pedro Strop each turned in a scoreless frame to close out the contest.

Oklahoma City added an insurance run in the top of the eighth against Nashville reliever Lindsay Gulin when Arias lifted his second sacrifice fly of the night to right to bring in Max Ramirez, then pulled ahead comfortably in the ninth with an eight-run eruption against the southpaw to increase the lead to 12-2.

Narron (0-1) worked seven innings, the longest outing by a Sounds hurler during the young season, but took a loss after allowing three runs on nine hits while walking one batter and striking out six.

Sounds shortstop Alcides Escobar went 0-for-4 on the evening to snap his season-opening hit streak at five games.

The teams continue their series with an 11 a.m. matinee on Wednesday morning at Greer. Right-hander Mike Burns (0-0, 9.00) will take the hill for the Sounds to face Oklahoma City right-hander Doug Mathis (0-0, 3.00).

Final: Huntsville 5, Mississippi (Braves) 4, 13 innings

Huntsville Site Game Summary:

COLD NIGHT CLIMAXES IN COMEBACK VICTORY

Stars Outlast Braves

By Brett Pollock / Huntsville Stars

Vinny Rottino singled in the game-winning run with two outs in the 13th inning to lift Huntsville to a 5-4 win over Mississippi Tuesday in the opener of a five-game set at Joe Davis Stadium. The Stars snapped a three-game slide to improve to 2-4, while the Braves dropped their second straight to fall to 2-4.

Brian Dumensil took over on the hill for the Braves in the decisive frame and recorded two ground outs before walking winning pitcher Casey Baron, who advanced to third base on a Jonathan Lucroy single. Rottino, mired in a 13 at-bat hitless drought, roped a line drive into left field on a full count pitch to end the four hour, 28 minute contest.

Each team stranded at least one runner in scoring position in each half of the 10th, 11th and 12th innings. Baron struck out Kody Kirkland with runners at second and third to end the 12th and retired the side in order on five pitches in the 13th to earn his first double-A win. Donovan Hand, Josh Wapehpah and Derrick Ellison combined for six innings of shutout relief behind starter Jeremy Jeffress, who recorded eight strikeouts in four frames and retired the last 10 batters he faced.

Mississippi took a 4-3 lead in the ninth against Juan Sandoval on consecutive sacrifice flies by Willie Cabrera and Travis Jones, who each knocked in their first run of the year. Yohannis Perez led off the home half of the inning with an opposite field home run off of Rafael Cruz to tie the score and drive in his third run of the game. Kevin Melillo followed with a pinch-hit double but was left stranded at third base.

The series continues on Wednesday night with southpaw Chris Cody making the start for Huntsville against Braves' right-hander Deunte Heath. Coverage of the game begins at 6:45 pm central time and can be heard through the internet at www.huntsvillestars.com.

Final: Fort Wayne (Padres) 3, Wisconsin 2

Wisconsin Site Game Summary

TinCaps still perfect at Rattlers expense
By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

GRAND CHUTE, WI -- An RBI triple by James Darnell in the sixth inning snapped a 2-2 tie and sent the Fort Wayne TinCaps to a 3-2 victory over the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers Tuesday night on Time Warner Cable Field at Fox Cities Stadium. After Darnell's triple, Wisconsin managed just one base runner over the final four innings and the TinCaps remained unbeaten on the season.

Juan Sanchez started a Rattler rally in the second inning with a double that banged high off the wall in left field. He would move to third on a grounder and score on a sacrifice fly by Shawn Zarraga.

Wisconsin (3-2) used a near carbon copy to get their second run in the third inning. Cutter Dykstra singled and took second on a throwing error to start the frame. A grounder off the bat of Michael Marseco moved Dykstra to third base. Brett Lawrie drove in Dykstra with a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.

But, the TinCaps rallied without small ball in the top of the fourth. James Darnell drew a two out walk from Rattler starter Michael Bowman. Catcher Adam Zornes was next and he drilled a 1-2 pitch from Bowman over the wall in left for his first pro homer and to tie the game 2-2.

Fort Wayne (5-0) took the lead in the top of the sixth inning. Rattler reliever Liam Ohlmann walked Allan Dykstra to start the inning. Darnell lined a triple to rightcenter and Dykstra scored easily for the 3-2 lead.

Reliever Mike Watt retired the next nine batters he faced -- seven by strikeout -- to carry that Fort Wayne lead into the bottom of the ninth inning.

Wisconsin's John Delaney singled to start the ninth, but TinCap closer Brad Brach got the next three batters to record his third save of the season and to close out the Rattlers.

The Timber Rattlers wrap up their season opening homestand Wednesday afternoon against the TinCaps. Efrain Nieves (1-0, 0.00) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Anthony Bass (1-0, 0.00) is the scheduled starter for the TinCaps. Game time is 12:05 PM.

Wisconsin Box ScorePitchers and catcher Shawn Zarraga 0-for-3 in holding basestealers; zero walks and 14 K's for Rattler batters -- ouch...

Wisconsin Game Log

Zarraga K'd in a big spot (1st and 3rd, one out) in the 4th, Erik Miller couldn't pick him up; Cutter Dykstra's throw home in the 6th was big to keep it a 3-2 game, but in the end, didn't prove to be a game-saver...

Too many walks continue to haunt Timber Rattlers pitching staff in Midwest League loss to Fort Wayne

By Brett Christopherson

Post-Crescent staff writer

GRAND CHUTE - When Michael Bowman was asked to think back on his first outing of the season, he didn't see the four strikeouts or the three hits allowed over four solid innings.

Instead, it was that costly two-out walk he issued in the fourth, followed by that crushing two-run homer.

"It kind of hurts looking at that," the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers right-hander said following Tuesday's 3-2 Midwest League loss to Fort Wayne at Fox Cities Stadium. "You don't really see the rest of the outing. The first time out, I'm pleased. But the walks, I'm not happy with."

It was a pair of walks, in fact, that played a factor in the setback. Two innings later, reliever Liam Ohlmann issued a free pass to lead off the sixth inning and the TinCaps took advantage the very next batter when James Darnell roped a liner to right-center to plate the go-ahead run.

That capped the scoring for Fort Wayne, which bounced back from an early 2-0 hole to win its second straight against the Rattlers.

"It frustrates me," said Bowman, whose hanging slider on a 1-2 offering was hammered by Adam Zornes over the left field wall in that key fourth inning to tie the game at 2-2. "I try not to walk a lot of guys, I pride myself on that. But I think our pitchers are doing great. We're just falling behind, and we're still trying to get comfortable with this cold weather. But you can't have any excuses."

Nor would Wisconsin pitching coach Chris Hook, who didn't seem all that concerned about the number of walks his staff has racked up over the first five games.

Fort Wayne walked seven times on Tuesday, raising the Rattlers' team total to 27 through 46 innings. They came into the game the league-leader in walks allowed - the only blemish of an otherwise stellar early-season performance by a Wisconsin pitching staff that currently has a 1.37 team ERA.

A pair of walks came back to sting Wisconsin during its 2-1 10-inning loss on Monday. The TinCaps drew leadoff walks in the ninth and 10th innings and scored each of those runners as they rallied from a 1-0 deficit.
