Pure Rumor - Weeks for Dontrelle?

Recommended Posts

Probably a long shot - Why would the Marlins want to get rid or either, but it would really help them keep costs down and I think the Crew could find another 2nd baseman if need be. For this season alone, I think Counsellnino might be able to get it done

I would do that if I wanted to shorten the Brewers window to win a championship.

Both of those guys should be free agents by 2009 and are already ridiculously expensive. Plus, Willis hasnt been very sharp this year.

But you are essentially replacing Ben Sheets with Dontrelle Willis. Then after the season you can offer Benny up to the highest bidder - likely a team in NY or Cali.

I love Weeks, but Vinny is mashing and can play 2nd base just fine. Add in Hernan Iribarren(sp) and Yohannis Perez(who I think would be just fine at 2b) and I think we are pretty decent there even without Weeks.

And who knows what you get for Ben Sheets? If you offered him to NYY, there is a good chance you might get Robinson Cano and a high prospect.

Change can be good.

But you are essentially replacing Ben Sheets with Dontrelle Willis.

All that really accomplishes is delaying free agency/a decision by a year, and makes it less likely that said pitcher will resign.

We have a chance to retain Ben. We wouldn't have any chance to re-sign Dontrelle.

Peavey -

I respectfully disagree. With this team the Crew would have that 1-2 punch (Sheets/Willis)to dominate the playoffs. Perhaps you wouldnt even have to lose Sheets cause of the playoff Revenue.

When your making your push this year with a pitching rotation of :

Sheets

Willis

Suppan

Capuano

Vargas

And your Pen is

CL CoCo

SU - Carlos Villanueva

SU - Sarfate

RP - Wise

RP - Gallardo

RP - Shouse

RP - Dave Bush

Your lineup is

OF Hart/Gwynn

SS Hardy

3b Cabrera

1b Fielder

CF Hall

C Estrada/Miller

OF Jenks/Mench

2b Counsell/ Graffy

I dont know - its not even a real rumor, just something I made up. But to me it would be an unbelievable opportunity to win a World Series now and build a dynasty if the revenue really started rolling in. Willis and Prince would be some really marketable faces and I would put that lineup top to bottom right there next to the Yankees. That rotation would be better than any in the Majors.

I dont' know what is wrong with Willis this year, but he isnt striking a lot of guys out and I dont think he is an improvement over Chris Capuano, when it comes to that "one-two" punch.

And now we add in trading Sheets. This gets complicated. Braun and Weeks have the potential to be very, very good and in Brewer uniforms for the next 4-6 years. I dont see any reason for Doug Melvin to all of the sudden change the philosophy that built this team and start trading away these guys for expensive vets who will be leaving in a year or two.

It just doesnt make sense. These are trades the Yankees make when their prospects have a bad week. Not the Brewers.

The first premise with which I disagree is the need to "go for it this year". There have been numerous articles in which GMs and scouts are quoted as saying the Brewers are set to make a sustained run over the period of several years. Part of making that run is a young core which they can keep intact. Moving two of those piece for two that won't be around for more than 1 1/2 years doesn't make any sense.

The second reason I don't like this deal is it doesn't make the Brewers that much better now.

Willis is decent, but he's not as good as most make him out to be, in my opinion. This Chris Capuano comparison is right on (see below).

While Cabrera is very good, I think Braun is very good, too, and he's Brewer property for 6 more years. As much as people rail on Braun's defense, he's a gold glover right now compared to Cabrera. Miggy probably won't be at third much longer.

So, the Brewers lose Weeks and Braun for a Chris Capuano-clone and a player who, while better than Braun, isn't hugely better and may not stick at third.

No, I don't like this deal. It doesn't do enough short term to put the Brewers over the top, and it makes them significantly weaker in the future.

Willis

WHIP: 1.3

OPPBA: .260

K/9: 6.5

BB/9: 3

Capuano

WHIP: 1.3

OPPBA: .260

K/9: 7.3

BB/9: 3

Chris

it's a nice thought to want to improve this team to make an even stronger playoff push this year, but I personally think two or three extra years of competitive/division-winning baseball down the road is much more valuable.

Just curious. I've been hearing a lot of the Miggy is unmotivated, just in it for the money, refuses to improve, etc. Where is this coming from?

I don't know. Isn't it pretty easy to dismiss that thought when he is a top 10 player in the league at 24 years old and improving every year? Sure, he is heavier than when he came into the league, but part of that is just getting bigger from 20-24. If the Brewers were able to get Miguel Cabrera for Rickie Weeks, you'd have to do that in a heartbeat, he's too good to pass up. Trading Braun is pretty much out of the question, though.

maybe if it was a one-for-one deal in trading away one of our future stars, that we could probably live with. but a two-for-two is a lot to give up (future-wise, not necessarily talent-wise).

I actually wouldnt do that trade, but i'd do Weeks for Willis straightup in a heartbeat. I'd even throw in a medium pitching prospect like Tim Dillard or a regular like Vargas. Of all the main prospects, Weeks seems to be the only one not exceeding expectations, and in all honesty i dont think he'll ever be more than an average to slightly above average player. We could slide Bill Hall to second base fulltime, and play Gross/Gwynn in center field. A rotation of Sheets, Willis, Capuano, Suppan, Bush would be amazing.

id do weeks and vargas for willis, but i am sure they wouldn't. They would want one of our top 2 pitching prospects, as well as a top prospect hitter. The marlins know how rich our farm system is and there mo is to get top propects. Vargas adds not value to their rotation and weeks has not been able to stay healthy. Why would the marlins do that?
