Would you give up Gallardo for Miguel Cabrera?

I'm not sure I would do this (or if the Marlins would), but this is only Miguel's 4th full season, so a team would still have him for two years after this season before he became a FA. Cabrera is 6 months younger than Weeks but for 3 straight years has been hitting like Hank Aaron in his prime.

If the Brewers could get Cabrera, they would arguably have the greatest collection of 25 and under htting talent in major league history with Prince, JJ, Miguel, Ryan, Rickie, and Corey taking up 3/4th of their lineup.

Would it be worth it to make such a trade, given the flame-out potential that all young pitchers have? Or would Cabrera's increasing arby salaries and 2 1/2 years of control make the deal not worth it for a low revenue team like the Brewers?

As an aside, how much is Cabrera going to get paid after 2009? If he's at 3rd still, I could see him surpassing A-Rod's quarter billion dollar contract, especially if he breaks out a 50 homer season or two. Even if he moves back to the outfield, he'll get Manny Ramirez money at least. Good to be him right now.

If the question is would I give up Gallardo for Cabrera, the answer is probably yes. But would Melvin do it? I don't see how he could. Like you said, in approximately 2 years, Cabrera will sign a 6-8 year deal worth 15-20 per. The Brewers can't do that, and even for that year and a half he would be making a hefty sum. Gallardo is dirt cheap for 3 or 4 years, depending on how he does, and may end up being our best SP.

Where would you play him? 3B or a corner OF?

Depending on what the Brewers really think of Braun's defense, I'm thinking left field because Cabrera seems to be not that great at 3rd (kind of how Pujols was when he played over there). Then, in that scenario, the Brewers would trade Jenkins/Mench for whatever pitching help they could get. (Maybe the Astros would be interested in Jenkins for Lidge or something along those lines, seeing how bad their offense is.)

What I would do if I got Cabrera is for the rest of the year I would throw him in RF. I would switch Hart to center and keep Menchkins in LF. From there Hall becomes a supersub playing 4-5 days a week at 3B, SS, 2B, LF, and CF. This would be messing around with Billy again but heck, look at last years numbers when we did that too him.

That would be a good idea too. Would Billy take over in left or center in 2008?

I'd love to have Cabrera. however, he has two strikes against him.

1. his salary demands are going to approach what Soriano received from the cubs , and he and his agent both know it.

2. he is fastly developing a Gary Sheffield attitude. The reason he is playing third is because he demanded the marlins take him out of playing outfield and back to playing an infield position. He came up through the minors playing SS and 3B. he hated playing outfield, and made his feelings known publically, and forced the marlins to play him at third. Cabrera is not a take one for the team type of guy. i'm not sure why cabrera hated playing i n the outfield. i just remember he made a big stink about having to play there, and he kind of forced the marlins to trade away Lowell so he could play third. if the Brewers tried to play Cabrera in the outfield, he'd be pouting a fit worse than Sheffield. and he'd be demanding a trade.

So, You mean that we pray that JJ goes down with an ankle injury in mid may so that Billy can play Short stop everyday, right?

Again. Billy was a top 5 SS in the league last year. Give him time to learn his position so he can focus on hitting again. He will do fine as a CF.

Cabrera is my wife's least favorite player in the entire league. That opinion is based soley on his picture when he came to bad at Miller Park.

He has his head cocked WAY back giving the "I know I'm cool" look.

Just that picture alone makes him a punk.

But seriously - financial issues make this a no. (Plus we didn't draft any pitching today)

I'd do this in a heartbeat. I think it would make the Brewers almost Red Sox good, and solve their number one problem, dumb hitters. I'd put Braun in the OF; he's got the speed, it's easier, and I think he'd flourish even more. I'd package Jenkins and others for top flight bullpen help, and then watch the rest of the NL eat our dust.

I don't like this at all. Hall is not a good CF, but Hart is right behind him in bad OF defense. He is athletic, but he is not all that instictive out there.

Cabrera is a young version of Carlos Lee, so why would we stick him in RF wich is harder to play than LF? More I read about this guy I will pass on him being a Brewer.

Are you crazy? Dontrelle Willis is no where close to Cabrera when it comes to game changing talent. Willis has a career ERA+ of 116, which is clearly above average, but nothing special, his WHIP was 1.41 last year, and is over 1.50 this year. I think Willis is good, but he WILL be overpaid soon, and wont be that much of an improvement over what we already have. Cabrera would be.

I think you a wrong there. He is 24. He isnt going to blow to be Kirby Puckett.

I predict he plays 3b for 4-5 more years, then moves to LF or 1b. He wont DH for another decade at the earliest.

I would compare Cabrera's athleticism to Pujols'. They both came up as 3B (though so did the Horse, and I wouldn't put him in the same breath as Prince Albert). But while I have long been enamored with Cabrera, and to imagine adding that bat to this lineup would make me overly giddy. But I long ago accepted that Jeffrey Loria may be cheap, but he wouldn't trade away the best young hitter in baseball.
