2009 Minor League Pre-Season Roundtable Now On the Home Page

That was an excellent discussion as always my friends... It even appears that Mass joining me on the Trejo bandwagon!

The breakout question would have been particularly hard to answer. Brewer, Braddock, Seidel would have been my obvious choices but there are so many guys with potential it's tough... I probably would have answered Trejo based on the knee injury that cost him last season, Frederickson if he can find some control, I really like Bowman for some reason and I don't even have a good explanation why. Other guys like Bramhall and Dennis who've flown under the radar thus far would have been solid picks, Dykstra though I would have preferred him on the infield, Gindl could have a really nice season at BC as Space Coast won't suppress his offensive numbers igniting another debate about height. Looking at the Latin pitchers Rivas and Peralta could explode... so many choices and not enough space to adequately cover them all.

Everybody seems to hate Salome. Too bad, I was hoping he would be an important part of the team soon.

I don't think any of them said Salome wasn't going to be an important part of the team, just that his defense needs improvement to be so. I was also surprised that no one said much about Caleb Gindl. I think Gindl could certainly establish himself as a mainstream prospect. His bat has played well.

It also may be me, but I have a hunch we'll start to see more "Let's move Brent Brewer to second" sentiments toward the middle of the year. Even if Lawrie has set that pace....

I think that almost all of them missed the boat on who to watch this year. I think that Logan Schafer is very high on the Brewers list and will have a good year. He has moved up and will probably be the starting CF in Brevard. The Brewers really like him and as someone mentioned to me. He does all the little things right and he's a polished player.

Not to be picky, but we really didn't have a "favorites" or "ones to watch" roundtable question. The closest question was "Name three players that you think could establish themselves as legit prospects after underperforming last year." I'm kicking myself a bit for mentioning Eric Farris there only because his final numbers were pretty solid after a tough start. I shouldn't speak for pogokat, but Shawn Zarraga was a stud in Maryvale, and shouldn't have been included in his blurb, either. Sorry, dude.

The first Power 50 of the year will be out the weekend of April 11-12. That would be a better indicator of what you're mentioning.

Very good discussion. I wanted more. It does seem like the Brewers have a bit of a mystery system now (deep and studless) and it should be fascinating to see how many of these guys step up and turn themselves into topflight prospects. I sure hope it's pitching. Personally, I think Wooten is going to jet through the system and either shine or flame out, though I doubt the latter. Dale Sveum has got to get a hold of Brewer, what an ugly stance. In defference to Astro fans I can't imagine him being a successful big league hitter looking like that.

I disagree. The consensus seemed to be that he should be dealt to the AL and never be a starting player on the Brewers. I'll continue to hope that such assessments are mistaken because it would be fun to have a tiny little catcher who can hit like Angel on the team. So far in his career, Angel's OPS is .138 points above the league average OPS. That's better than every Brewers player except for Prince & Braun. Hopefully he can keep that up in AAA this year and make his case for being a long-term piece of the team. Lucroy looks good, don't get me wrong.
