Geoff Jenkins released by the Phillies

fondybrewfan
Phillies released outfielder Geoff Jenkins.

Signed to a two-year, $13 million contract last offseason, Jenkins lost his starting job to Jayson Werth and is now completely out of the Phillies' plans after hitting just .246/.301/.392 last season. He still has some value as a platoon player or bench bat, but at 34 years old Jenkins is likely done as a regular.

So where does he end up?. Kind of feel bad for the guy since he was such a good Brewer during our terrible stretch but at least he got a ring.

No thanks. He had a .728 OPS against righties last year, and besides, I'm not sure if I can suffer through those agony-filled moments during which he flails at the dirt. Even Tony Gwynn Jr. is a better use of a roster spot at this point. At least he can run (somewhat).

Not surprising that he got released. I could never stand watching him. Last year he didn't get enough PT in order to go on his one month run of good play that always salvaged his season numbers and it made sense because the Phillies had 3 far better players in the outfield and didn't need to suffer through 600 PA's of Jenkins.

i love jenkins, but that bus has left the station.

If Nelson was looking terrible, perhaps, but at this point, go with the younger guy with upside. We have to go with Duffy or Gwynn as the fifth OF,so we have a back up CF, but for the other OF, let's give the young guy a chance.

Still one of my favorite plays over the past few years would be when there was a runner on third and a medium fly ball to right... you know Jenkins was going to come up gunning and it was going to be close.

Anytime the situation came up and the fly ball was hit... my friends and I would sail off our couches yelling "Here we go!" "He's gonna test the arm!" ...

... good memories. Best of luck to him.

we have too many lefties off the bench as it is. He'd be a good late inning defensive replacement and a good leader but thats about it. We need players who can get hits off of the bench and I think Nelson and Duffy are the 2 that best fits the bill.

Well, I would think that we'd play a healthy Braun, Cameron, and Hart as much as possible, right? So what if you pass Gwynn through waivers (or he gets claimed, whatever), and you send Duffy down to AAA. I would have to think that despite his age, Jenkins could still out-hit those 2 guys, and he's gotta be a better defender than Nelson. If Cameron had to miss any significant time, you could just call Duffy back up. Hart could occasionally play a game or inning or two in CF, although he really shouldn't be used there more than that.

I don't know, I'm just spitballin' here, I'm not sure that's a better option. But it could work and you could perhaps generate a little more offense that way.

Curious, anyone know what his WS share was?

My son had a pic taken with him when he was like 7 or 8 at the Fan Fest when it was at Brookfield Square. Then we went to a signing at the Fan Zone at MP and he signed it.. Good memories.. Where does the time go? Sunrise, Sunset..

When did he come up again? '93? '95? He should get full pension should he retire, which I don't think he will.. Maybe Telly whats his name's replacement?

He doesn't fit the profile of a pinch-hitter or bench player. He just doesn't put together quality at-bats, and he is way too streaky. There is a reason the Phillies released him despite owing him a lot of money.

Anyway, if this is the end for him, he had a nice career. I wish him well.

I hope he gets honored by the Brewers somehow. Walk of Fame maybe?

As much as I appreciated Jenkins' effort during his time in Milwaukee, I have to agree with those who say there is simply no room for him. In fact, I'd go so far as to agree he will probably have to retire. He's the kind of guy who needs to play every day and get hot in order to be useful, and there aren't a lot of teams that can afford to stick him in a corner outfield position and hope he hits at the right time.

The other side of the argument is that if he can stay in shape, he presents a chance for someone to bring in an outfielder with a live bat at some point in the season.

Wearing my heart on my sleeve since birth. Hopefully, it's my only crime.

I really hope that Jenkins finds a team that is willing to bring him on for a year or two while they rebuild. It would be nice to see him end his career on a high note. Unfortunately he just isn't a great fit for any team that wants to seriously make a run at the playoffs.

Was there even a question about him making the walk of fame? Jenkins was one of the few bright spots on this team during some pretty dark years. He always played hard and he was a class act to boot. I wish that we could have a few more players like him on the team today.

I named my dog Jenkins...so I will always be a fan of Him....but I have to agree that he is not a part time player (does not have the makeup as a good part time player) and there is no room for him as a full time player in Milwaukee.

It will be interesting to see where he lands. I'm not so sure he couldn't make the transistion to part time player. He did have a .954 OPS in 23 pinch hit appearences last year and I seem to recall a huge double he had in the World Series.

A lot of teams are going with young and cheap for their benches to start the year. At some point some of these young guys are going to struggle and teams will be looking for that veteran.

As for the Brewers, until we see him do it for real, we really don't know about Nelson. We do know that Jenkins plays fine defense in both corner positions and he's now very cheap too. I wouldn't add him now, but I wouldn't rule it out down the road either.

He may catch on somewhere, but if was smart, saved his money, he should call it a career. He should just savor that he finally made it to the WS, and won as well. Nice to have that as your career closer.

Why call it a career? Fangraphs said that teams should look to add him. The Marlins already are interested. If he plays and even gets one more year at minimum after this its more than worth it. If the Brewers would allow Hart to play CF Jenkins or Sheffield would be a better idea than Gwynn or Duffy.
