Ronny Paulino dealt for 3rd time in off-season

jaybird2001wi

Just thought I would mention this, but this guy was just traded yesterday to San Francisco for Wisconsinite Jack Taschner and then subsequently traded to Florida for a prospect. What is more weird is that when I opened this morning's Racine Journal-Times, they ran two articles: One on Taschner's trade and then another involving Racine native Jason Jaramillo being traded to Pittsburgh in December for... you guessed it Ronny Paulino.

So not only was he traded twice in 24 hours, but was also traded for two guys with ties to Racine. How weird is that? So in a span of less than 4 months Paulino was:

1. Traded from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia for then-Phillies top catching prospect, and Racine native, Jason Jaramillo (Dec. 10)

2. Traded to San Francisco for a guy with Racine ties, Jack Taschner, yesterday (March 27)

3. Traded to the Florida Marlins for a right-handed pitching prospect (today, March 28)

This has to be as unique as the Rob Ducey debacle in 2000 when Ducey was traded to Toronto from Philadelphia for a Player to be Named Later, then was sent back to Philadelphia as a Player to be Named in a separate deal.

There was also a guy who was traded for himself in history, I believe it involved the Indians.

The Harry Chiti thing appears to be a bit of a myth, at least according to b-r's transaction log. It looks more reminiscent of a Rule 5 guy getting returned to a team because the new team wasn't happy with him than a guy getting traded for himself. Still odd, just not sure it meets the "traded for himself" criteria.

A couple of years ago Jaramillo was their top catching prospect, but he had fallen out of favor with the organization the last two years. When the Phillies found out that his bat wasnt going to be as good as they thought it was going to be, they went with Chris Coste as their backup to Calros Ruiz, Jaramillo was stuck in AAA for two years. If he had been able to show a bit more power he could have been their starting Catcher last year. As time went on Lou Marson quickly surpassed him on the organiztional depth chart because of his bat, and when Travis D'Arnoud began to emerge as a good hitting and good fielding catcher, Jaramillo became expendable.

Jaramillo should be a very servicable back up for the Pirates to give Doumit a rest, but if he has an injury, it would be a lot like the Brewers having Rivera being the starter for an extended period of time.

Dickie Noles was the more recent one in September 1987 from the Cubs to the Tigers for a PTBNL. After the season he was returned to the Cubs. Baseball-reference calls it a loan. What's odd is that Noles became a free agent later that off-season and signed with the Orioles. Not sure why the Cubs wanted him back.

See? It's always in 6 degrees or less!

I wonder if guys getting bounced around so much like this is more an indicator that they're just slightly better than replacement-level players, or if it's a testament to the fact that many teams see things they like about said players. With Paulino being a catcher, I wonder which is more true.

The only player in baseball history ever to be traded for himself was Harry Chiti. He was traded from the Cleveland Indians to the New York Mets for a player to be named later. He later became that player to be named later and was traded back to Cleveland in 1962 approximately 2 months later.
