"World" Series

Brewtacular
Japan may or may not be the next strongest. When did I suggest it would be a Japanese national team? Why would Ichiro be involved in any sort of club championship for a Japanese team? If the Mariners were our champion they would be countered by the Japanese champion not some sort of all star team.

I've got the solution that will make everyone happy. Change the official name to the "Probable World Series." You could still call it the World Series for short if you wanted, but now its no longer innaccurate. And we could call the ALCS and NLCS the "Possible World Series."

Kidding aside, I actually think the point has a little more validity than those who dismiss it as a joke.

And as for the argument it would lose the MLB vast amounts of money and be a total marketing disaster, can I ask how? I wouldn't be totally opposed to changing the official name to its nickname, the "Fall Classic." Is that really going to drive away fans and marketing dollars?

No, it doesn't. It's just a name.

An incorrect name. If the World Series was invented today, the title of "World Series" would not be used. The argument is valid, IMO. Its importance is debatable.

World still has meanings other than the entire planet so this opinion isn't valid no matter how lame it is in the first place. Even if the entire point of the name is that it the best team s in the world the name was created so long ago that it is foolish to want to change it now. This is just another case of bored people whining about useless stuff because they like to complain about things.

Companies pay for their brand to be associated with the World Series because people who don't watch baseball, like my grandmother, still know what the World Series is. The name has cachet. If Granny KegStand picks up a bag of potato chips that says, "Win $100,000 by watching the World Series on FOX!", she might pay more attention than if it says, "Win $100,000 by watching the MLB Championship Tournament Finals on FOX!"

How much more attention? Hard to say...but if it sells more chips, it sells more chips.

The reason MLB will never change the name World Series is the same reason they won't change the brand "Aunt Jemima"

Besides, we all know the world revolves around America anyway.

Bit of a side note, but I had a Math Professor that had no problem with "World" but with "Series." He felt it should be the World Sequence instead.
That professor is just awesome. All hale our geographically distinct region's sequence champion!
