catching WOAH SOLVDD declined

I didn't see this posted elsewhere.

The Brewers could have gotten back uber catching prospect Lou Palsmo, but Doug Melvin declined to get the Rule 5 pick back. It would have only cost $25K plus his salary to reclaim him. Geez Doug, get with it. WWSBD? (What Would Sal Bando Do?)

I don't understand why he didn't take him back. He traded a prospect in Eric Fryer, moved another one to second base. That leaves Lucroy and Salome, one of whom could easily be traded in a deadline deal this season. Palmisano could have played behind Lucroy at Huntsville. Does this have anything to do with roster space? Would he have had to be placed on the 40 man roster?

Doug has always been willing to give a minor leaguer a chance to hook on elsewhere if the player had a better path to the majors and it didn't hurt the Brewers organization -too- much. I think this was one of those situations. Still, I would have taken him back too.

I think the big thing was where was Lou going to play. Salome is going to be the #1 in Nasville, Lucroy could very well be the # 1 in Huntsville. Lou would be relegated to back up duty. I think at this point in his career, Lou still sees himself as a # 1 guy. Would it be fair to Lou to take him back then put him in Brevard County? The depth would be nice, but I think it is a class move by Melvin to let him stay in Houston.

Agreed. This is exactly the case. It'd be nice to have Lou back in the Brewers organization, but to be honest it wouldn't be fair at all to Lou. He wouldn't see the field much in AAA or AA and having Lou as a backup at either level hurts Lou and the Brewers since that would stunt his development. Let's not forget the Brewers also have Carlos Corporan who has put up better numbers than Lou has (at least at AA). I'm not sure about the defense between the two. Carlos would be a starter at AAA for some teams IMO and he's also two years younger than Lou. Lou's fate was 'sealed' with the Brewers when he got hurt last year and really never recovered. If the Brewers keep Vinny at AAA as a utility guy/backup catcher and have Lucroy and Corporan at AA (not sure where Carlos would be) there just isn't room for Lou. The only thing I could've hoped is we would get a low level prospect for him. Best of luck to Lou and let's not forget Lou hasn't gotten past AA yet.

The only reason this surprised me is that Salome is still injured.

I didn't think Salome was expected to be out that long. Corporan and Rottino can cover the Nashville job until he comes back regardless. When he returns, I'd expect Corporan to be the primary backup and Rottino (if he's not released altogether) to return to his super utility/3rd catcher role.

Palmissano, at best would be a AA backup to Lucroy. I don't think that's where you wan to put a 26 year old that's been in your organization for a long time.
