Brevard County outlasted Inland Empire, 10-7. Lee Haydel had three hits, three RBI, and two runs scored. Brent Brewer added three hits of his own and scored twice. Eric Farris and Logan Schafer contributed two hits apiece to the Manatees attack. RHP Amaury Rivas made his spring debut, starting and tossing a scoreless inning -- looks like he's being eased into action here early on.

Wisconsin outslugged Great Lakes, 11-7. The Timber Rattlers had seven extra-base hits, including four triples. Juan Sanchez had three hits and scored three runs. Chris Dennis, Cutter Dykstra, and John Delaney each had two RBIs. LHP Evan Frederickson walked five in three innings, but managed to keep the Loons off the board. For our friend above who asked about Brett Lawrie, still absent -- maybe we should assume an oblique intercostal thing (just kidding).

Looks like Vinny Rottino will be keeping things warm for Taylor Green in Huntsville -- link while active, text follows:

Rottino sent down to Class AA Huntsville

St. Catherine's graduate will be Stars' everyday third baseman

BY PETER JACKEL

(Racine) Journal Times

This guy just wants to play baseball.

Vinny Rottino's overwhelming preference is to be warming up Seth McClung or David Riske in the bullpen when the Milwaukee Brewers open their season April 7 against the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park in San Francisco. Instead, Rottino will probably be spending his 29th birthday that day finding some place to live in Huntsville, Ala., the Brewers' Class AA farm affiliate.

After being demoted by the Brewers during a meeting Monday with manager Ken Macha, general manager Doug Melvin and assistant GM Gord Ash, Rottino agreed to play in Huntsville, where he will get a chance to play regularly as the Stars' third baseman.

So after being groomed as a catcher at Class AAA Nashville last season, Rottino is going back to the future with Huntsville, where he played in 2005.

"They called me in and said, 'We're going to have to send you back to the other side,'" said Rottino, a 1998 St. Catherine's High School graduate. "What they said was they couldn't guarantee me everyday at-bats in Triple A. They got guys down there who are locked in, they're prospects and they need to play.

"So I asked them, 'Do you have any other opportunity elsewhere in the organization?' If I'm in the minor leagues, I need to be on the field and show I can play and show other teams I can play. They said, 'Right now, you can have the every-day job at third base in Double A.'

"I said, 'Well, that sounds like a no-brainer to me.'"

The handwriting was on the wall for Rottino considering his lack of playing time once he returned to the Brewers' training camp in Phoenix, Ariz., after representing Italy in the World Baseball Classic. He went 2-for-15 (.133) with one RBI with the Brewers during spring training.

But even though Rottino is moving back down the ranks with the Brewers, he remains optimistic. Just ask him what his mindset is.

"You know me," Rottino said. "You know what I'm going to say. I look at this as an opportunity to get my at-bats, put myself back on the map a little bit and go from there. We'll see what happens."

Nashville outslugged Tacoma, 12-10. Newly signed outfielder Jason Tyner had three hits including a double and three runs batted in. Brendan Katin hit his fifth home run of the spring and collected four RBIs. Jason Bourgeois added three hits and scored three times for the Sounds. Nice to see Angel Salome in action behind the plate. Matt Ginter started and allowed eight runs in four innings, only two earned, but still a rough day. Joe Bateman (three innings) and Robert Hinton (one inning) had fine scoreless relief efforts.

Huntsville edged West Tenn, 6-5. Freddy Parejo, Johnny Raburn, and Johnny Ash had two hits apiece to lead the Stars. Parejo and Raburn each tripled. Vinny Rottino's 2-for-6 line seems odd unless rules were relaxed for pitcher AB's. Casey Baron and Juan Sandoval combined to shut out the Diamond Jaxx over the final three innings.

Brevard County knocked off High Desert, 7-5. Michael Vass provided the fireworks for the Manatees, slugging two home runs and knocking in five. Eric Farris hit leadoff and collected three hits, including a double and triple. 18-year-old Dominican infielder Joan Abreu, a newcomer to the organization, certainly is seeing action throughout many of these games at various levels -- looks like a name to watch come June. Brief but much-needed bounceback outings from RHP's Mark Rogers and John Axford.

The Brewers farm teams face the White Sox in spring training action Thursday. Nashville and Huntsville will travel to Glendale for their final visit of 2009; Brevard County and Wisconsin will host the White Sox clubs in Maryvale.

All game times are 1 pm local starts.

Still no Lorenzo Cain, we'll try to learn more. I will say sometimes it's worth waiting just an extra day or two before pushing for answers. Sometimes you learn that a player left camp on bereavement leave or something like that (not saying that's the case with Cain).

Thursday's Games:

Nashville squeaked by Charlotte, 7-6, thanks to a late rally. Mat Gamel collected three hits, including a double and a three-run home run, and knocked in four runs. Cole Gillespie, apparently over any minor elbow issues, added a two-run shot. Chris Narveson picked up the win in relief and Ryan Houston got the save. Chase Wright allowed five runs (four earned) in his 5 2/3 innings start.

We are about to post box scores for Friday's action, as well as Saturday's games -- double your pleasure!

This will conclude the formal box score info for spring training. The teams play intrasquads on Sunday, there will be no formal reports from those games.

The kids then scatter, with, I believe, each scheduled to play a local collegiate team at their home park in an exhibition game before the minor league regular season begins on Thursday evening.

Friday's action:

On an extremely windy day, Nashville was defeated by Columbus, 16-11. The game featured 39 hits between the two teams. Cole Gillespie had two doubles and a home run amongst his four hits as the DH; he also drove in five runs. Derrick McPhearson had a home run and knocked in three. Hernan Iribarren, Erick Almonte, and Jason Bourgeois added three hits apiece to the Nashville cause. Angel Salome homered. The misfortune of pitching in the offense-friendly conditions fell to Sam Narron, Chris Smith, and R.J. Swindle. Narron did the best job of limiting the damage, with three runs allowed in his five innings despite plenty of baserunners.
