National League Rookie of the Year (merged with SmartBall's tulo thread and craigharmann's "Braun and Yo for ROY?" thread)

lithium75

At this point in time, is anyone even close to Ryan Braun for the ROY? He could be the best of the group of homegrown youngsters we have.

Pence obviously has a chance since he had such a big AB lead. There are a few pitchers who could make a case if they keep throwing the ball well, though I don't think any of them are for real.

Pence and Braun had nearly identical numbers before today's game. Tulowitzki has been hitting well of late too but I think he's a distant third as far as position players go.

Pence is favorite right now for sure. Hes put up some amazing numbers. If Braun keeps up at this pace though, you cant deny him. Even if braun goes 300. with 20Hr's and 75 RBI. That could do it

player with less than 130 at-bats, a pitcher with less than 50 innings pitched, or anyone with less than 45 days on any Major League roster.

Pence - 229 AB, 29 R, 8 HR, 35 RBI, .336 AVG, .936 OPS

Braun - 129 AB, 30 R, 7 HR, 25 RBI, .349 AVG, 1.035 OPS

I'm guessing this could end up being something like an MVP type proposition.

If Ryan Braun and the team continue on the current pace, hitting in tand 3-hole for a division winner should give him the nod over Pence, unless Pence is just so much better.

That said, even a 'trendy' Milwaukee team isn't going to grab a huge amount of media attention. Even now, Milwaukee seems to be the team to doubt, as the national media almost audibly roots for the Cubs, with their big names and big $$, to get back in the race.

I think if the Cubs' and Brewers' positions were reversed, the national media would be pulling just as hard for the Brewers to make a race of it. Covering pennant races that end in July kind of sucks in August and September.

If we make the playoffs and Braun keeps up these numbers, it's a foregone conclusion he will get the nod over Tulo and Pence. When Scotty Po lost out to the D-Train, the major sticking point was the fact that D-Train did it for a contender that won the WS.

I am really excited about Braun and also think that he is going to be the best to come of this group. I'd say him and Hart are as close to five tool as it gets (fielding being where he is lacking).

I think that Pence is the one that deserves it, but with Milwaukee having the sucess that they are, he will probably come out with the ROY.

I'm more interested in Fielder chasing the MVP award, although he will need to overcome Reyes. I may be forgetting some names also, but I'm not sure.

In no particular order the four things that will determine the NL ROY unless some pitcher comes up and goes ballistic for a contender are HR, batting average, RBI, and contender status. At some point Braun will lock up that last category as someone will connect his appearance to Milwaukee coming out of it's May slump and he will be compared ad naseum to Cabrera. After that he only needs to be competitive in two of the other categories and get at least 1 for himself. Right now it looks like he might have HR edge despitethe AB difference in which case I can't imagine how Pence would win.

One of the thing that irks me is when Colorado position players get accolades when their home/road splits display the obvious... Everyone was all over Barmes to be the next big thing in '06 when he was a .636 road OPS player.

I really do think Braun will be the ROY this year... Pence is a total hacker, and those players generally get figured out by the league.

There's a difference between striking out and swinging at garbage.

I agree, however if Braun has superior plate disciple, I would expect him to have a lot more walks. Even Eke says it, Braun goes up there swinging.

Maybe it will come out over the next 100 at bats. We'll see.

no one ever includes him, but Josh Hamilton has a .902 OPS with 13 home runs, 28 RBI and 33 runs.

You're right. He was the darling at the start of the season and then got hurt. He's right in the mix too.

Based on stats alone, I'd give it to Braun right now. He and Hart have done their best to carry the Brewers this month.

I doubt it! The National Media would be all over the Cubs!!!

The Brewers would be just a blip on the radar screen.
