TTM (through the mail) Autographed Cards (Trade or info on how to get)

I asked him about that as I've been using wikipedia on some of those guys to find out their story since. I went to the card shop and just bought all the Pilots cards they had of guys who signed. His name wasn't on my list of Brewers, so I thought I missed one and bought it anyway. Found out he has a high percentage so I looked him up and wrote him. He played his last year with the Astros in 1970. But he didn't tell me how he ended up with the Pilots/Brewers organization. I'm guessing he was traded and was released. There's a few guys that fall into that boat that I wrote, including Brookfield native Don Pavletich, who has a 72 Brewers card, but ended his career with the Red Sox in 71.

From baseball-reference (regarding Don Bryant):

December 1, 1969: Drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers from the Houston Astros in the 1969 minor league draft.

April 3, 1970: Returned (earlier draft pick) by the Milwaukee Brewers to the Houston Astros.

Brock Davis 1972 in black pen

Moose what are you all sending? I have 20 going out today (none to spring training). That's my project for this week. Good luck!

Anyone had luck with Yount or Molitor through Spring Training mail?

Bikeage- I have 8x10s going to: Lucroy, Khris Davis, Kintzler, Juan Francisco, Sean Halton, and Bianchi. 11x14s going to Segura and Wily Peralta and a 11x14 of Lucroy's walkoff celebration at homeplate that I sent to Scooter Gennett to start as a multi-signed project.

I got Molitor on an 8x10 through Twins ST last year. It took two tries but I got him. I got Yount to sign an 90 Topps AS through his home address.

Jaime Cocanower in black sharpie on 84 Topps Traded

Also bought an 83 Topps Don Sutton signed in black marker for cheaper than his signing fee ($10 and a 50% success rate)

Got a 2011 Nyjer Morgan for a few bucks off the bay too, though it appears he's a pretty good signer TTM (83%)

Sent out about 20 on Tuesday, hopefully I'll have more posts coming soon. I'm still sitting on about 10 guys from the last batch who haven't returned yet, either.

Nah, unless it seems like there should be a return. For me, I spend roughtly 10 minutes and a buck a player on average. I did take a full day over winter break putting each players first card into a spread sheet, and then noting if they sign through the mail, with/without a fee, etc. But I did that while listening to records and I enjoyed the process of it. I have a pretty good system down now so it's really not too big of a deal. The hardest part is getting the cards, but I know a dealer that has dug up cards for me a few times and enjoys helping me out since he knows about my project.

To answer your question, I've resent a few, but really it's a buck lost if I don't get a return. For all the returns I have got back it more than evens out. Most of these guys cards are being sold for 3-5 bucks each plus shipping on eBay. I've mailed to about 127 players (maybe more, I've got cards back that I never logged and added em in) and have received back 87. Some with multiple cards. There's about 20 that are included in that 127 I just mailed out, and another 10-12 that I mailed out in mid January. So that leaves me around 20 that are not returned. (With 4-5 players having their cards sitting at minor league stadiums somewhere waiting for the new season to start).

All in all it's a pretty good turnout. If I have doubles of guys, I send em and they've been signed. Hoping somewhere down the road I can use em as trade material. I'm not listing em on eBay unless I do it as a huge lot.

In the end, I'm okay losing 20 bucks if I know that had I tried to do this project on eBay or through card shops it woulda cost me $500 or more already. I know BrewersSuperCollector is a little more specific because he's sending OMLB balls, and those run 14 a pop and shipping is gonna be much more. I'm willing to chance it a bit more on "sometimes" type returns (ie Rob Deer, Felipe Alou, etc)

For me its a little more of a financial investment- but not much. I get my photos printed by Adorama. I wait for their sales and it costs me 1.00 per 8x10 and 2.00 11x14. Its like...2-3 bucks postage. I use sportscollector.net so I only send to guys who have a pretty good chance of returning. I have a 75% return rate so far- probably cheaper than driving to Waukesha or Milwaukee and paying for a signing and I feel weird stalking guys outside of the stadium. Its fun- you get some really interesting and different returns- I've gotten many of the 1960s era Packers and 10 of the 1957 Braves TTM

If you guys don't get a return, do you wait for a while and then resend?

Seems like a lot of work and money goes into this little venture...

I just do OMLB's TTM. I have resent in the past to players that I didn't get back that have proven to be automatic. Yes, like almost any hobby it does cost money. Yes, it does take some time, but that is what makes it my hobby. Round trip postage and bubble mailers is $6/ball.

This is my breakdown from the last 2 years.

2012...

sent 49 balls....1 was RTS...2 I never did get a return on (Rick Cerone and Wade Boggs). Cerone is almost a 100% return, so I can only assume it was miss delivered/ not sealed properly on the return/ etc. Boggs I just don't know as he is a pretty good return rate. Maybe its sitting in a room in his house. So, for 2012...46/49 signed and received back a ball.

2013...

sent 67 balls...2 were RTS...2 I haven't received back yet (Joe Slusarski and Tony Muser). Muser is pretty much automatic, but he signs everybody's at once so it may take 6-9 months. Slusarski should have been back by now as he has returned others items. I did resend Cerone and Boggs in 2013 and both were returned signed.

The last 2 years... 116 balls, 109 signed, 3 returned unsigned, and 4 MIA.

Thanks for the share Bikeage. Great project. Your post of the actual autographed cards brought back great memories of just how bad Franklin Stubbs is at penmanship. I remember getting his auto in person as a kid at County Stadium while in early grade school and thinking that I could definitely write cursive better at that age.

Got Wily Peralta back today on an 11x14. Photo got a little beat up in the mail (even though I had it back w/ two pieces of cardboard). Signed in blue with his new number 38

DeerSveum- congrats on the Robin! Not an easy graph, he usually sends a pre-print. :)
