Gagne's Throwing program? -- Latest: Strained calf, still not 100% (reply #3)

I'm fairly certain Gagne isn't hurt. I think I read Macha say last week that he's a bit behind because he came into ST late, so he has some catching up to do. But it's a bit confusing since McCalvy reported Gagne as saying:

"I have to show them I can still do it, that's all it is," said Gagne, who is noticeably trimmer than he was last season. "That's the only difference. I prepared myself a lot earlier this year and I'm about four weeks into a throwing program. I've been working hard and I feel good."
So I'm not sure. I think we would have heard if Gagne was hurt. Does anyone, who is in Arizona for Spring Training, have any insights they could share?

From BrewCrewBall.com

"Gagne, however, still isn't pitching much at all as he battles a strained calf. He'll throw BP on Friday before deciding if he's ready for game action. He's in a tough spot, though: By tomorrow he'll only have about four weeks to prove he deserves a spot in the bullpen before his March 25 deadline, so my guess is he'll go even if he's not 100%."

From FantasySP.com

"MLB.com reports that reliever Eric Gagne is dealing with a strained calf. He is afew steps behind the other pitchers, but plans to throw live batting practice on Friday.Gagne is on a minor-league deal, so these setbacks could cost him his roster spot. He doesn't sound very optimistic about his calf, and neither are we."

This is why I'd be extremely hesitant to put Gagne on the club. He's so fragile. Why pay $1.5 milllion for a guy to pitch 2/3 of a season?

Hmmmm.... according to the signing announcement, the Brewers have to put him on the 40-man roster by March 25th. But that doesn't mean he can't be sent to AAA, right? I think its almost 100% chance of a few people not making the team that are on the 40-man, but with no options left. So it shouldn't be too difficult to put him on the 40-man and send him to AAA, right?

So let him be the first call-up.
