Lawrie's Switch To Second Base Official -- So Is His Blog

That comment might have been asking him if he is practicing with the AA or AAA squad for spring training. Especially early on in spring training, players are shifted around to different teams to fill spots that were opened up by other minor leaguers that were invited to the MLB camp.

Maybe, but it was phrased as if he really isn't the "expert" he claims to be. I thought i was kinda humorous.

I majored in Brewer.

Isn't this an extreme comment? Give the kid a chance -- yikes.

Kevin Goldstein's "Notes from the desert" article at Baseball Prospectus from 4/3 included an ominous note about Lawrie generated by a quote from a scout:

Brett Lawrie, 2B, Brewers:

"He sure can hit, but I don't know what they're going to do with him now that he's not a catcher. Second base was just a joke. No way, no how he's going to be able to stay there."

C'mon, dude, the kid's 19 and hasn't played a pro game yet. Lots of eyes in Appleton will watch him make progress and tell us about it here.

Quoting myself from BCB:

It's not really about where he is or isn't going to stick.

It's that a one-liner from a scout is as useful as a one-liner from me on giving fans ("subscribers") any meaningful information. It's just silly.

Lawrie might be a terrible athlete and end up relegated to first base, or maybe he's got good instincts but poor range and would make a better third baseman, or maybe this scout just saw him play one game and is be afraid to say "I don't really know".

I don't know, but I do know that the amount of information provided by that quote from Goldstein is useless. At best, he's got an angle and it's agitprop. At worst, it's just filler to remind people that he's got the inside edge and scouts' phone numbers.

He might not have the instincts for it, but athletically he's capable of playing every position on the field, his scores were very good. His speed isn't elite, but it's adequate.

The guy that left the AA/AAA comment. If you click on his own blog, you'll see that he talks about his little league team or something. So, at first I laughed at him too when I first saw that comment, but it appears he's just a kid, so I'll cut him some slack.

Yeah, his about me section says seventh grade. It also says his favorite hobby is watching trains.
