Jim Edmonds

There might be a thread on him from a few months ago, so sorry if this needs to be merged. I am just wondering how cheap a team could get him for. I am thinking as low as 1yr/3mil might get it done. He's a lefthanded bat that was a brewer killer last year. His numbers were pretty outstanding in my opinion. I know he's not the defensive wiz he once was, but you've got to think he has the smarts to still decently handle even CF and both corner OF positions. I guess, as spring training is now here, I am quite worried that Gwynn/Nixon/Duffy will not be to my liking as a fourth OF'er and would think a really good and cheap option like Edmonds makes a lot of sense.

I'm all for getting Edmonds. It would be a huge upgrade over Gwynn. I really do hope the Brewers are able to/take advantage of the market right now. Salaries seem down and if the Brewers can make another move it could be a bargain deal. I know the Looper deal is a 'bargain' compared to what similar pitchers received in the past, but I would continue to look for more.

I wonder if there is something else going on with Edmonds - or if it's just his age that is scaring teams off - seems like he would be a good fit for a few other teams as well, but I haven't heard of him getting any offers.

I had mentioned Edmonds awhile ago as an alternative to paying Cameron $10 million. If he plays 2-3 days a week and puts up numbers similar to last year he'd be well worth it. Defensively he's not what he once was but he's not Manny Ramirez out there either.

I just wonder if Edmunds is looking for a team that is going to let him play full time against righties - meaning 4-5 days a week. He certainly showed some pop last year, but you have to worry about injuries. His back has acted up more than not over the past few years. Personally, I think he'd be great playing twice a week - get 20 games in center, get 20 games in right, a half dozen in left. With pinch hitting, he gets 200-250 ABs. He'd be a good fit - assuming he stayed healthy.

I think this would be an awesome fit. But I also think the Brewers really are tapped out right now.

I wonder if Edmonds is too proud, not it the negative sense, like a big head, but in the sense that if he can't do it the "right way" then he doesn't want anything to do with it. And so teams are willing to sign him up as the 4th outfielder/pinch hitter, but what he really wants is catcher's hours, 3 or 4 days outta 5. Sure like to know what he's thinking cause he'd look awesome in a Brewer uniform.

I really hope the Brewers are looking to sign Edmonds, personality aside, I think he would be a perfect fit as a 4th outfielder/pinch hitter. However I'm thinking his attitude might have something to do w/ teams not showing any interest.

Cameron has a history of wearing down late in the season and Hart most certainly could use some days off against righties. I could see Edmonds getting 2-3 games a week, maybe 4 tops. If he is looking for 4-5 games he probably wouldn't be interested. I'd still love to sign him though.

I'd love to add Edmonds if we've got the dough left to do it. We could end up with a very impressive and experienced bench with a lot of lefthanded options to balance out the lineup if the cards fall right: Rivera ©, Lamb/Hall (IF), Counsell (IF), Edmonds (OF), Nixon (OF). Not to mention, Brad Nelson just may bust out a little this year.

While I'm content with us going into the season as is, adding Edmonds and possibly one more reliever (Cruz, Cordero or Izzy) would really get me pumped for the season. We can use all the quality depth we can get.

Edmonds seems like a good fit, except for price.

When you take this years market, and Edmonds age, I highly doubt that he will get alot of money. I have the brewers between 78-80 million in salary right now, so unless Edmonds wanted 5 million guarenteed, cost would not stop us from signing him. Griffey only got 2 million guarenteed in this market, I do not see Edmonds getting twice the amount of guarenteed money Griffey did.

The only thing that would stop us from aquiring him would be if he wants to start. The Brewers would be able to give him playing time though, since we have an all right handed outfield, with an older centerfielder.

Not to nit pick, but the Brewers themselves are claiming their payroll is going to be in the $88-90 million range.

If you read the articles on Edmonds, it's got a lot to do with a perception that he's lost a lot of range defensively.

Offensively, teams are wary that his Cub numbers (mostly fueled by a month hot streak), were misleading in that he really struggled in San Diego and his last year with Cards. Wrigley Field is made for Edmonds' power to left center. No doubt he really likes hitting there. I think teams see that the Cubs didn't want him back and that threw up another red flag.

I don't think the question is whether he's a better option than Gwynn. The question is whether he's a better option than Nixon. Nixon is likely to be the 4th OF, with Hart sliding over to CF when they give Cameron a day off. How Nixon looks this spring will determine if they want to bring in Edmonds.

Remember the Brewers spent 7 million or so on the draft last season... it's not just player contracts, they have to budget money for the draft as well.

Attanasio came to the number using the club's accounting for salaries they'll have to likely pay during the year, which includes some of the bonuses, as well as salaries for guys not currently on the team. While the team that breaks camp might only have a collective payroll sans bonuses in the low $80 mil range, they'll end up paying at least $87-$90 mil in contracts this year unless they dump salary. You can't just look at the present nominal value of contracts when determining payroll level.
