Make a pitch for Erik Bedard?

I'd love to see the Brewers add a 2nd top pitcher, and the guy I'm zeroing in on is Erik Bedard. He was real good last year, and has been dominant this year, averaging 10.9 K/9.

Why could he be had?

-Baltimore is out of the race

-They actually have a decent stable of young starting pitching with the emergence of Brian Burres and Garrot Mock to go with Adam Loewen.

-They need to do something about there offense. They're old, just 12th in the AL in runs, and have almost no position player prospects.

-Bedard is looking at a huge raise being arby eligible for the 3rd time this next offseason.

The package? I think his value would be similar to Hudson and Mulders when they were dealt a few years ago at similar ages and contract situations

-They need a young CF, and there owner, Peter Angelos, would likely be enamored with a name guy like Gwynn

-Manny Parra

-Deal Capuano for a top young position player or position player prospect. We're heard of a Bush for Saltalamacchia rumor, why not Cappy for him? Cappy to LA for Matt Kemp? Cappy to seattle for Adam Jones? The position player would then be dealt to Baltimore of course.

Seems like a lot to give up for Bedard but he is leading the league in K's, plus he would be under our control for two years I think. I'm not sure why Baltimore would do the deal unless they really think they have no chance for two or three years, and they might. We would be losing three of our top 20 or so young guys, but Bedard would be another ace to lean on for the Brewers.

It is such a longshot, but I would love to get Bedard.

while bedard would be a fine guy to have,

I can't see why the orioles would peddle him,

and I can't see why the brewers would give up anything like villanueva, inman and escobar to get him.

Not even close, IMO. Gallardo+Hart maybe. They would probably ask for Braun.

Bedard is going nowhere. We can improve the rotation the most using guys from within.

There is a very limited amount of players I would swap Yo AND Braun for. It begins with Grady Sizemore, it ends with Jake Peavy, and it is filled with Johan Santana. Beyond the big three, I don't see the need to upgrade one position at the expense of two AND the expense to Mark's pocketbook.

Yes, I agree that getting Bedard would be great, but I am just wondering why the O's would even think about trading him. I mean, he is only 28 years old, throws left-handed, and leading the majors in strikeouts. I know the O's are not and will not be in the hunt at the end, but why would they trade away a valuable part of their future? I don't understand why people think that just because a team is out of the race, they would be open to trading their best players. If that is the case, why don't we go after players like Ian Snell, Shawn Marcum, Aaron Harang, Tim Lincecum, Noah Lowry, Matt Cain, Roy Oswalt, Adam Wainright, and the list can go on and on. Just because a team is out, doesn't mean they automatically are willing to deal their best player(s).

I do agree that it would take alot to get him. Like the other post said, I would have to think that a deal would have to start with one of our top prospects, like Braun or Gallardo.

Bedard won't be heading anywhere - he's pitching for a team that will be able to afford to resign him for the contract he wants. The Orioles will do that, because right now the only lefthanded starter in baseball that is better than him is Johan Santana.

I do not know if there would be any reason for Baltimore to trade one of the top young lefties in all of baseball, especially when he is pitching for an owner with deep pockets who can more than afford arbitration for the next three years and more than likely beyond.

Bedard would be the best pitcher on our staff at this point if we could acquire him athough I think Yo would move past him sometime next year.

That being said if Baltimore was inclined to move him the cost would be nothing less than Yo. We aren't paying that price.

I'm unsure why people keep suggesting we trade young pitching for established more expensive pitching that will walk sooner than later.

Maybe I'm just stubborn about young pitching.
