Benny out 4-6 - post your remedy

I cant decide - at first I wanted to just wait it out, but that is between 24 and 36 games that we are going to be without Big Ben. Problem is, I see nobody out there who is better than what we have.

Bush

Vargas

Suppan

Gallardo

Capuano

Parra

Thats a decent rotation that might be able to get it done, but whom would you like to add, as a REAL possibility.

Jose Contreras is definatly available. I wouldnt want him on this team though. He has junk.

Jamie Moyer seems to have finally smacked straight into that wall and I cant imagine the Crew would have interest.

I love to see the Crew active on the market but I dont see anyone who is really available that would help this team.

I would put Villanueva on that list, too. He's probably a more realistic option than Parra joining the rotation at this point. I expect and hope that they will stand pat.

I don't think you can look at starting pitchers in a vacuum like that, either. When one gets hurt (especially one the caliber of Sheets) it has a cascading effect on the whole staff. If one of those guys doesn't step in effectively, the bullpen becomes more taxed - and this can have residual effects even after Sheets returns, because someone like Wise could get over-worked during this stretch and have a difficult time regaining form.

This injury is the first real cause for concern for me in regards to holding onto the division.

Fair enough Brett - but on the other side of the coin, I see at least 2 pitchers who have the goods to really step up and assume Sheets spot as the leader of the rotation in Capuano and Suppan. Both guys have been underperforming a bit in my opinion.

I cant wait till Suppan takes the ball next, cause I think he is going to assume the role.

Villanueva, Gallardo, or even Parra are likely to be better than any guy we can trade for, and they're free.

That said, it would weaken the bullpen. My remedy is getting Otsuka (most likely), Gagne, Chad Cordero, Wheeler, Dotel, Kline, ect...

But, unless we are getting a nice deal or someone really stellar like Otsuka or Cordero, we should probably hold off to see how well Balfour and Parra prefrom out of the pen. Our entire solution may be in house, we should give it a week or two.

Getting a top-flight starter is not terribly likely, but maybe the Brewers could do it if they are willing to move prospects and/or a guy like Gwynn. Otherwise you're looking at relievers or guys like Kyle Lohse and Jamey Wright. I wouldn't be totally stunned to see a guy like Wright acquired to eat some innings, but I also think they will try to cover things internally first.

Melvin said on 1250 just yesterday that there is no chance Villy joins the rotation this year, he is far to valuable in the pen. The only way he would make a start is out of an emergency situation.
