Prospect Injuries -- Latest: A Caleb Gindl Update

I was hoping for a sprained ankle or something minor from Dennis, lame... it's been a tough year injury wise on the MiLB side. Here's hoping a speedy recovery to both. McPhearson needed to stay down in R+ in my opinion. I'd rather they bump up a guy like Davis or Stang and let McPhearson have success in R+.

edit. With Richardson and the other Davis still to sign there are actually more options to go up now that I think about it, the main point is getting McPhearson some early confidence.

Adam McCalvy:

Third-base prospect Taylor Green was placed on the seven-day disabled list at Double-A Huntsville because of an oblique injury, Ash said. Green, another of Milwaukee's Canadian imports, missed the start of the year after undergoing wrist surgery but has 24 RBIs, a .301 average and a .382 on-base percentage through his first 33 games.

Haudricourt:

Center-field prospect Lorenzo Cain, who suffered a serious knee injury in April at Class AA Huntsville, has begun a rehabilitation stint in Arizona and soon will join Class A Wisconsin, where the Brewers have sent players coming off injuries. Once Cain gets his feet on the ground there, he'll return to Huntsville, according to assistant general manager Gord Ash.

"Hopefully, he'll go to the (Arizona) Fall League after that," Ash said. "He should be able to get an extra 100 at-bats or so there.

"He has been good every step of the way (in physical therapy). He just needs to get in game shape."

Wisconsin infielder Steve Braun, brother of Brewers leftfielder Ryan Braun, suffered a broken ankle in a recent game and probably will miss the rest of the season. In that same game, outfielder Chris Dennis suffered a significant ankle injury and could miss six weeks.

"The club we've been using as our rehab club has become the cause of our rehab," Ash said.

Baseball America indicates that Taylor Green is back from the DL:

Brewers third baseman Taylor Green made a quick trip to the DL, but has already returned according to team reports. No surprise here though, as Green tends to weather injuries well (he missed just three weeks after breaking his wrist in 2008, then had his nose broken by a ground ball in the Arizona Fall League).

From the transaction thread:

MiLB lists 2008 10th round RHP Greg Miller (Seton Hall) as being on the reseve list. Unsually, this is an indiaction that a player has retired but has not filed all the necessary paperwork to do so.
Apparently he's rehabbing an elbow injury he suffered in spring training, trying to avoid surgery; he won't pitch this year.

Adam McClavy at MLB.com:

Triple-A Nashville catcher Angel Salome, considered Milwaukee's top catching prospect, has been absent from the box scores of late. He missed his fourth straight start on Wednesday, marking the eighth time in 11 Sounds games that Salome didn't play. Asked via e-mail about Salome's status, assistant general manager Gord Ash responded that the team was "just giving him a few days. According to the trainer, he will be fine." A followup e-mail inquiring about Salome's particular ailment went unanswered. Ash has been very busy with GM Doug Melvin searching for pitching help ahead of Friday's non-waiver Trade Deadline.

As we hinted at in Saturday's Link Report:

Brett Christopherson's Appleton Post-Crescent Blog:

Outfielder Erik Komatsu exited the game after injuring a hamstring in the third inning. The injury occurred as Komatsu was charging towards second on a fly out to left. Rattlers manager Jeff Isom didn't know the severity of the injury afterward, only saying Komatsu is "day-to-day."

"We'd love to have his bat in the lineup," Isom said. "Hopefully, it's going to be something that's temporary."

The 21-year-old Komatsu has been sidelined most of the season because of injury, which included an earlier hamstring problem. He's hitting .243 with one homer and two RBI in 11 games.

Excuse my paranoia....but Jake hasn't pitched in awhile. I was surprised he didn't begin in Wisconsin, so we had to wait for him to appear in Helena, and after a handful of appearances, he's disappeared from what I can tell.

Anybody know why?

From Brett Christopherson of the Post-Crescent:

Delaney update

Wisconsin Manager Jeff Isom said infielder John Delaney suffered a concussion after being hit in the head by a pitch during last week's series at Fort Wayne and won't return to the field during the team's upcoming eight-game road trip.

"He should be back here for our next homestand I would imagine," said Isom, whose club won't return to Fox Cities Stadium until Aug. 15. "We're being very cautious with him since this is, I think, his second (concussion) this season. Anytime you have an injury with the head, you're going to be very cautious. So we're going to be in no hurry to get him going."

Delaney, currently on the disabled list, is hitting .222 with 16 doubles, one homer and 21 RBI in 60 games. He was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 25th round of the 2008 June draft.

Huntsville Times:

Stars first baseman Kevin Melillo hyperextended his left arm Wednesday night when a West Tenn runner collided with him while he was taking a throw on a bunt attempt. Melillo was in a full-arm sling, and he said the plan was to keep it immobilized for around a week.

"There's no doubt I'll be ready for the playoffs," he said.

Helena Independent Record:

Second baseman Cutter Dykstra is in good condition after cracking his nose in Tuesday's game during the ceremonial first pitch by Walker Texas Ranger star Clarence Gilyard, Jr (wikipedia link).

Certainly there's a Chuck Norris one-liner here somewhere, ceremonial first pitch so powerful just being associated with Chuck Norris type of thing -- glad Cutter is OK. Hopefully he's taking it all in good stride.

This is exactly how unlucky Dykstra's year has gone. He finally gets hot at the plate and he breaks his nose before the game even starts. Here's to better luck next year.

Got to give Cutter some props tonight. He came out to receive the 1st pitch, wearing a batting helmet and catchers mask. Got a nice ovation from the crowd. Also came in as a replacement in the 6th, so it looks like he's ok.

Adam McCalvy on how Caleb Gindl got injured, plus a nice Brewerfan shout-out:

Brewers farm director Reid Nichols said Saturday that Caleb Gindl, an outstanding outfield prospect who missed the Florida State League playoffs because of a broken right hand, was not injured during his first at-bat of the regular-season finale but just after it. Gindl grounded into a double play and then punched a door leading to the clubhouse, suffering a non-displaced fracture.

The good news was that he led with his non-throwing hand. The very bad news was that Gindl was placed on the disabled list and missed the Manatees' first-round playoff series against Tampa.

"He said he didn't hit it hard, but it was enough," Nichols said. "He was really embarrassed about it. That team was such a cohesive unit and they supported each other so much that he felt really bad about it."

Gindl was upset, Nichols said, because he needed at least two hits in the game to bat .280 for the season, a personal goal. The outburst, Nichols said, was out of character.

"He's not a hot-head," Nichols said. "I told him that we don't want him to change the fact that he's setting goals; we want him to have high ideals. What's important is how you deal with failing when you don't meet those goals. He knows it."

Even though he finished below .280 -- the double-play left him with a .277 average -- Gindl had a great season. He hit 17 home runs in an extremely pitcher-friendly park, second in the league, tied for second in the league with an .822 OPS and tied for fifth with 71 RBIs. He also stole 18 bases.

The Brewers picked Gindl in the fifth round of the 2007 Draft. He was rated the Brewers' 11th-best prospect in the most recent installment of the excellent Brewerfan.net's Power 50.
