Any computer science majors here?(or someone who knows alot about computers)

adamb100

Taking a computer science class @ UWM and the professor covered Logic Gates yesterday(and then tied this into Binary, decimal and hexidecimals). I kinda got lost here and I'd like someone to fill me in on these "logic gates".

Thanks. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

I know I learned that stuff at Marquette as an Electrical and Computer Engineering major, but it's pretty fuzzy. I think it's one of those things that got flushed from memory shortly after the class ended. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

What exactly are you fuzzy on? I've taken a couple of classes with this type of material, and I'd like to think I know what I'm talking about. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

Binary, hexidecimal and decimal are all different ways of displaying numbers.

11 in binary means three.

11 in hexidecimal means seventeen

11 in decimal means eleven.

1 hexidecimal number is 4 binary numbers (as it represents 0 to 15 -- or 0 to F), so, 1111 is fifteen, which is F in hex.

To convert binary to decimal:

1011 (for example)

The number on the left is mutiplyed by 2 to the 0 power. (1*1)

The next number is multiplyed by 2^1 (2*1)

The next by 2^2 (4*0)

and the last by 2^3. (8*1)

Then you add them up. 8+0+2+1 = 11.

For hex, its the same principal instead of using 2 to the power of, you're using 16 to the power of.

Hope that made sense.
