Brewers sign Dillard, Stetter, Escobar, Gamel, McGehee, Nelson and Salome to 2009 deals; Latest -- Morlan and Scarpetta also signed

And That

Link to TH's blog post.

Not terribly exciting - no salary details given, but most of them got major league deals of around $400K (Stetter probably got a little more) and minor league deals of a lot less than that.

By my count, they still need to sign DiFelice, Gallardo, Gwynn, Iribarren, Morlan, Parra, Pena, Periard, Rivera, Rogers, Rottino, Scarpetta, Swindle and Villanueva to similar deals. Hart and Weeks both of course still need to get their contracts sorted out, too.

All in all, the Brewers have signed 23 of the 39 players on the 40-man roster.

Im really glad to see Brad Nelson back. He provides a bit of depth in case, knock on wood, something happens to Fielder, but its also been such a long run for him it would be nice to see him in Milwaukee for a significant amount of time.

Not sure I agree that Nelson will be a nice bat off the bench. An OK 25th man? Maybe. An asset? I don't really think so, especially considering his defensive limitations. You could make a case that when defense is considered, Tony Gwynn or a guy like Nix or Crabbe (who are both no longer in the org but could easily be reacquired) would be a far better option off the bench.

Don't the Brewers pretty much decide the salaries of players with less than 3 years of experience? How does the process work?

The players have no clout. The best they can do is "lobby" for a bit more.

Teams don't have to pay these guys anything at all above minimum. But in general, teams implement "formulas" that minimally reward players for past service. Milwaukee has been noted as one of the more generous teams when it comes to pre-arby players.

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

Rule 5 draft choice Eduardo Morlan and '06 draftee Cody Scarpetta signed 40-man roster deals today according to the JS blog. Morlan is likely to make $400K if he makes the club out of spring training. Scarpetta won't be in Milwaukee anytime in the near future, so he'll make whatever the minor league portion of his deal is.

That makes 28 of the 40 players (not including Braden Looper) on the major league roster signed for '09. Still unsigned: DiFelice, Gallardo, Gwynn, Hart, Iribarren, Parra, Pena, Periard, Rivera, Rottino, Villanueva and Wright.
