Dunn Rumor (Dead)

I'm not saying its the case here, but do you ever think teams purposely leak potential trades to get a sense of what the fan base will think before they pull the trigger? I know that might seem kind of far fetched, and I know I'm going to get "no way" responses. But think about it...why would you ever want to make a trade, unless it was strictly for financial purposes, that would upset the fan base? Wouldn't it make sense to kind of get a feel of how it's going to play out with the fans?

No deal: General manager Doug Melvin laughed off reports on Thursday that the Brewers had acquired Cincinnati Reds outfielder Adam Dunn for a package of players including reliever Matt Wise.

Did we just get slammed?

If you're worried about fan reaction, you have no business running a team.

I knew I'd get that kind of reply. But I still think it's not completely without merit. So if your a GM, you should never be worried about what your fans think? That doesn't seem to make financial sense to me.

GMs are worried about what fans think- they just realize what matters to fans better than most fans themselves.

Good GMs know that winning will bring fans to the park, will get fans to spend money, etc, not signing Jeffery Hammonds or something like that. GMs know the best way to please fans is by putting a team on the field that fans want to see, and they know that fans really want to see a winning team more than individuals that play on a bad team.

GMs also know that trading a player, no matter how popular, will only result in short term angst if said transaction makes the team better.

Gee guys thanks for straightening me out on what a GM's job is.

I mean hey you guys are probably right, it was just a thought. But I still don't think it's wise to make trades that will upset the fan base (again, unless maybe they are financially neccesary). Basically you are saying that GMs never make bad moves. I think the Jet's could have used some help over the years from their fan base when it came to draft picks.

edit: BillScott your post makes sense..didn't see your post before I made mine.

now what makes this even more confusing is that with Melvin coming out and flat out dening or ripping on internet rumors makes it seems like there is something there if i am reading my Melvin statement/Truth chart.

From the guy's blog:

[ Pleaser leave Rob Butcher alone

For listeners calling Reds media relations director Rob Butcher about a possible Dunn to the Brewers trade...please stop..........this is in the MLB rumor mill.......nobody says it has happened or will happen. Rumors of trades fly as the deadline nears. Don't call the Reds asking if it has happened. Thanks. ]

So did this really all stem from some radio guy's blog in Cincinnati?

That, plus the idiots at 1250 ran the story w/out facts to back it up...

Melvin's flat-out denials = nothing's happening.

Melvin's quasi denials = something' happening.

I really don't think there's a deal for Dunn going down. It wouldn't make any sense with another LH'ed expensive LFer on the team.
