Dunn Rumor (Dead)

Brian, I heard brewerfan.net named during the poat game show, but I don't believe it was in that exact context. I think Tim Allen said the Cincy host started it and the rumor was on brewerfan.net. I don't think he said that brewerfan.net "ran with it"

Well, that's not a big deal... But I'd rather it be clear that it was on our message boards as simply linking to the Cincy host and not us reporting that it was close to happening. It's semantics, but we go through pretty great efforts (I sure as hell did today) to make sure that any reports that the staff runs with are confirmed by reliable sources.

Did anyone hear it in a different context?

From the mention of BF.net I heard, the impression I got, from the words and the tone of voice, made me think he was deflecting "blame" from the station to BF.net. I was ump'ing a game this afternoon, perhaps I heard the radio wrong. I did take a few fast balls to the dome during the game (darn little league catchers).

I was very disappointed that WSSP reported this trade as "breaking news" rather than just as a rumored deal. I am a huge fan of the station, but this sort of thing really hurts their journalistic integrity

I honestly think someone needs to get fired. That's how poorly this was handled by the station. The whole thing was so misleading and it was a disgrace. They really made it sound like Dunn was a Brewer for sure.

I actaully heard it when it was first reported by WSSP on my way to the game. Cliffy came out and said that there was "breaking news about a major trade involving the Milwaukee Brewers" He then said they were working to confirm it. They specifically mentioned that it was reported by a radio guy in Cincinatti as reported on BF.net. Didn't sound like blame at that time. Didn't hear the whole post game show though...

Well since we're a rumor mongering site able to control the media perhaps we should make up more rumors. Particularly ones were we trade almost nothing for Yankee players as if we were entitled to whatever players on their roster we wanted.

I have a good source- my sister's boyfriend (who looks exactly like Ryan Braun, and thus must be a great source of insider info) has a cousin who has a friend who cuts Steinbrenner's hair, and he says there is a strong rumor we're getting Jeter for Gwynn and a PTBNL.

For reals.

No deal: Journalistic accountability took a hit Thursday after a Cincinnati radio personality posted an entry on his blog that said the following:

"From the MLB rumor mill ... Dunn to Brewers for Matt Wise, Tony Gwynn Jr. and an infield prospect."

"It was news to me," Dunn said. "Where does that stuff come from?"

A Milwaukee station saw the post and reported it as fact. Both teams' general managers, Wayne Krivsky from the Reds and Doug Melvin from the Brewers, spent parts of their days dismissing the report as baseless.

"I'm taking more calls deflecting these kinds of rumors than I've had talking to GMs," said Melvin, whose club is already flush with left-handed-hitting outfielders. "There are freaking geeks who get ... off on this kind of stuff."

The non-waiver trade deadline is July 31 and many rumors will circulate for the next couple of weeks. Dunn's name has frequently come up this summer as someone who could be moved to a contender by Cincinnati. Right fielder Ken Griffey Jr. caught wind of the erroneous report.

"I knew Dan O'Brien couldn't get enough of you," Griffey joked to Dunn. O'Brien, the former Reds' GM, now works as a Brewers' assistant GM.

That really sucks.

I'm actually glad to see that report, because they got it right and "blamed" the blogger who started the rumor in the first place.

Some dork with a blog strings together what he thinks the Reds might take to move Dunn, and it reaches all the way to both GMs, with Griffey and Dunn both being quoted...amazing.

"Trade Rumors / Proposals" -- is there something they were missing about this title when they tried to blame bf.net? Honestly, anyone that tries to pass blame over here need only look at some of the other threads in the trade rumor forum.

I love the fact that at this site, as opposed to some other forums, the rumor was swiftly and correctly moved immediately from the Major Leagues to Trade Rumors until there was reliable confirmation. So basically, the radio stations information came from rumors in a category that I believe also includes a thousand rumors about Carlos Lee last year, along with a few ideas of how we can get Manny Ramirez...hmmm

If I had Braun's pee in my fridge I'd tell everybody.

Just for reference, and I'm not trying to start anything else, but what kind of comments did Melvin make around the Sexson and Overbay trades? Were there any raging internet rumors during the Overbay process that Melvin downplayed? I know he remained relatively low-key during the Carlos Lee thing, but I wasn't around the internet stuff yet during the other two biggies.

The key "kiss of death" phrase is "I'm not motivated to move...".

This site should have no blame in this matter. I was the one who made the post on the Major League forum after getting a call from a friend in Milwaukee who said the trade was being reported "as fact" (which, apparently, it was). When I couldn't find a link, I figured there was some error, and by the time I went back to correct it the thread had been moved. Kudos to Brian and all other moderators around here.

Amazing that a simple rumor could cause such a ruckus.

"But given his contract and defense and strikeout-related issues, I don't think Wayne Krivsky can get much in return for him."

This quote is from a chat today by Jerry "The Idiot" Crasnick. I just found it funny considering on the Reds board they were talking about only accepting a Braun-like player back for Dunn. Why are the people in the media so clueless?

The truth's obviously somewhere in the middle.

The K's are somewhat of an issue, despite the fact that they're overblown by a lot of people. The defense is a legitimate concern, and the fact that the second he's traded, he's on the route to FA, his trade value is diminished.

Probably something similar to the Carlos Lee deal last July, is what I would expect... He'd be ideal for a team who needs a DH or a 1B, but of course, still nice to have for a team with LF issues.
