Dunn Rumor (Dead)

I talked about this all day at the park. It sounded official as I got out of my car today. When I heard T-bow and Wise, I knew it wasn't real but I'd love to see Dunn hitting 5.

From the CI side, looks like they've been through this before.

Sounds like there's something working though....

So, here's what apparently happened here:

Random Cincy talkshow guy posts unfounded rumor on his blog. We discuss it here. WSSP sees discussion here, reports it on air. Brewerfan reports WSSP reporting, along with people's reports from the game and friends/relatives/barbers reporting that they're hearing this is kind of credible (probably due to hearing it on WSSP). WSSP continues to elevate the rumors to 'close to done', probably in large part due to the discussion/rumors here. ESPN hears Milwaukee radio reporting the trade, and congratulations, we've helped churn a rumored trade into one where we're getting a big-time player on national airtime!

On my drive home from the game today I had WTMJ radio on. They reported this rumor and said Doug Melvin had shot denied ever having discussed this with the Reds.

They then went on to say if the Brewers had done it, Doug Melvin would have made "Just about the worst move in the history of General Managers." They went on about Dunn's Ks, and the fact that the Reds view him as lazy and a malcontent.

Of course it's WTMJ with great sports talk show hosts such as Bill Michaels, Dan O'Donnell and Jeff Falconio.

It would have probably one of the biggest heists in the history of general managers. They'd be trading what amounts to spare parts (the only contributor being Wise, but he's a 7th inning guy) for one of the premier power/patience guys in the league.

From the game notes: Here

Quote:
"There are freaking geeks out there who get ... off on this kind of stuff [posting internet rumors]," Melvin said.

Wait... I thought we were nerds?

He says in the article that he spends more time defusing rumors like this one than he does on talking to other GM's about trades, and it frustrates him. The article also mentions that the team "briefly" looked at acquiring Kenny Lofton but decided against it when they found out Hall would be back sooner than expected.

I just read through this whole long thing. I have to admit that my thoughts after reading the initial post was this. Why would the Reds want a middle reliever? Winning teams make deals at the deadline to shore up their bullpens. Losing teams trade players close to free agency for prospects at the deadline. That's just how it has always been, and will always be.

Before it was exposed as baseless, I also had this thought: Man, the guy who made this up should have said Villanueva or Parra, in stead of Wise. At least that would have made sense from the Reds' perspective.

Meanwhile...On that same note, pitching Wise as long as they did today was very odd. I don't remember him ever going 2 innings, let alone 3 innings and 53 pitches. Maybe they were not showcasing Wise at all. Maybe he pitched 3 innings because they didn't want to use Villanueva and Parra ...

I think it would take a very very good offer for Melvin to consider trading away Villanueva. A young, talented, cheap starter years from being arbitration eligible would command much more than 1/2 year of Adam Dunn. Parra, on the other hand, I don't see as being held in such high regard, so I could see him packaged with gwynn or another prospect as a potential deal.

you guys were talkin about wtmj...i wish there was a better option that i could get in clear every day, because the big unit

and all the other guys,on sundays..dan o donnell etc are awful.

some of the stuuff michaels says is just plain dumb and half of it has nothing to do with sports.

Just a small note...Wise has thrown more than 3 innings in his time with the Crew. It just seems at an odd time since Cappy went a decent length last night. My only guess is that it must be Parra's weekend at the first sign of needing a long night out of the bullpen.

The reason I thought this had legs is the fact that Yost didn't use Wise yesterday on 2 days rest in a tied ballgame. Instead he opted for a guy who hasn't pitched in the Majors for 2+ years.

At the time I though either Yost isn't half the manager that I give him credit for or something with Wise was about to go down.

I was thinking more along the lines of something was about to go down. Then Yost pitches Wise 3 innings today when he could have easily got Parra's feet wet in a low stress debut.

So now I'm leaning back to the idea of Yost has no idea how to manage a bullpen. And usually I back most of Ned's decisions.

I thought it was nice that the guys on WSSP blamed us for spreading this rumor.

Some guy called in and asked "Can you guys tell me anything about this Adam Dunn rumor I'm hearing", and the host (don't know his name) said, "Some radio host in Cinny said something that the guys on Brewerfan.net ran with. There's nothing to it."

Did I miss something? Didn't WSSP trumpet this as a done deal at the top of the noon hour?

Wow. Are you kidding me?

Was the during the post-game show or a different show? What time was it?
