Powell leaves for the Braves - visit the Brewerfan home page for a farewell from Jim (see reply #84)

Georgia Brew

Andy Mazur is brutal! Used to hear him when he would fill in for Pat Hughes on Cubs games

Of course, when he'd sub for Ron Santo, he provided a huge upgrade. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

I'd like the Brewers to consider Ryan Radke. He impressed me when he worked with Daron Sutton on some of the spring webcasts. At the time, he was the Tucson Sidewinders broadcaster. (He probably still is.)

Well, he will be looking for a job then, since the Sidewinders are heading to Vegas I think. They are done in Tucson anyway.

Here is a little Thank You from Jim which was posted at sportsbubbler.com

I just want to drop in to say "THANK YOU!!". I really appreciate all the kind words steered my way via message boards and emails. Working for the Brewers' fans all these years has been truly an honor and a privilege. I would stack up Brewers' fans with those of any team in the game. Considering the market size and the general fortunes of the team on the field since the Seattle Pilots lighted at County Stadium, I think the fans of this team have greatly out-performed just about everyone in baseball. It is easy to be a fan of a team when it wins every year. This team's fans helped build one of the best stadiums in MLB and now they fill it up at a staggering pace, and it isn't like there are pennant-wielding-flagpoles all over Miller Park (yet).

The future of this team looks bright and of course Bob and his new partner will do a great job bringing the games to you. I was not in any way trying to get another job...my family loves Milwaukee and I loved my job. Going to my hometown to work for the team I rooted for while growing up is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I just could not ignore it. I hope you understand. How many people on this earth besides Ueck and now me actually get to broadcast the Major League games of the team with which they grew up? Can you name anyone else? My family and I will always love Milwaukee and I will continue to follow the Brewers very closely. I hope the Braves and the Crew meet for the NL title every year!

Thank you again for your support and kindness. I will never forget it.

Sincerely,

Jim Powell

That was a very nice note from someone who seems to be a very nice guy. Good for him on landing his dream job.

How about a little more airtime for Kent Sommerfeld after all these years of service? Also a great guy and fellow UW-W alum. . .

Class and professionalism exemplified...

Thanks for the memories, Jim. This may sound like a broken record, but it's been an absolute pleasure listening to you on the radio. Good luck in Atlanta and wherever your career takes you...the sky's the limit. I'll be looking forward to a mini-reunion on the air when the Brewers come to Atlanta in June.

Good luck in Atlanta, Jim, it's truly a shame to lose you - but who could blame anyone for going back home?

I'm glad you enjoyed the site while you were here, and I hope you'll continue to drop by.

I was lucky enough to meet Chipper Jones a couple of weeks ago - I told him how fortunate the Braves would be if you chose to join them...and then you did.

Would you mind having, say, 2500 house guests until winter is over?

Geez, Jim...can't you just be a jerk on the way out?

Burn a few bridges, so it will be easier to see you go.

No. Instead of all that, you have to take the high road and show - once again - that you're a class act.

Best wishes in Atlanta; I'm looking forward to the pre-game shows when the Brewers go to the ATL.

Thank you, Jim.

You indeed are a premier broadcaster (I would know -- I have XM), and congratulations on taking advantage of an incredible opportunity. I've spent countless hours over the years listening to you paint a picture of a baseball game with words, and it's been a joy. I'll be listening on XM this spring, but it won't be without a twinge of sadness.

Good luck in Georgia and with the rest of your career; I'll always be a JP fan!

Jim -- I have no better words in response to your departure & accompanying letter aside from, THANK YOU.

Thank you for your devotion to the Brewers and their fans over the years. Thank you for always staying up on the Brewers as an organization, and working that knowledge seamlessly into your broadcasts. Thank you for being the classiest professional a fan could hope for in radio.

And thank you for not turning down the opportunity of a lifetime to share your gift with your hometown fans & team. I just hope they know how lucky they are... they'll find out soon enough. As a die-hard, born & bred Brewers fan, I can only imagine how fantastic the opportunity to be their radio voice would be. Enjoy your time in Atlanta, and thank you for all the thankless hours you've put in along the way in your trip to, and now beyond, Milwaukee.

And go Brewers!

Offft.. he's come a long way since he started getting some air time in spring training. But I think Kents got a way to go, his play by play, though very accurate and precise, lacked that something that keeps you entertained and listening (That something Uke and JP have). I do not doubt that Kent has a great baseball mind, but he just has to work on his presentation skills.

That was really nice of JP to make that letter to the community here. But it makes me wonder how many zingers he stole from IGTs hehe.. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I'm curious if BTA can use his super hero powers to find out who is in the running?

I'm definitely going to renew my subscription to MLB Audio so I can hear one of the best voices in the business articulate baseball like no other.

I was just thinking the same thing. Jim alone makes it worth it (not to mention getting to hear Vin Scully call late games.)
