Powell leaves for the Braves - visit the Brewerfan home page for a farewell from Jim (see reply #84)

Georgia Brew
Com'on guys, look Atlanta once took Aaron, Mathews, Torre, Jones, Alou, Carty, Clonginger, Menke, and the rest of the Milwaukee roster down to Atlanta.

Now that was worth crying over.

If you were alive then, sure.

I was 13 and that never stopped hurting.

My point is that announcers come and go. Back in the day, there was great commotion when Earl Gillespie stopped doing games but that was nothing compared to the team leaving 2 years later. Some guys are better than others. Most are fine though who wouldn't want to forget the Loren Brown/Dwayne Mosely era. It's unfortunate they were around for the best Brewer seasons. Boy were those guys bad. Brown used to be unable to discern between flyballs and home runs, and Mosely used to use 10 words to describe something where 2 were plenty.

As I've posted in previous forums I'll truly miss Jim Powell. Great guy and great broadcaster, Atlanta is lucky to get him.

Here's something to look for, I believe the Brewers knew Jim was gone for at least a couple of weeks. I would not be surprised if the Brewers announce their replacement radio voice this weekend as part of On Deck. I believe the Braves wanted to announce Powell and Sutton as a tandem and the Nationals have been holding up this announcement.

Powell's status was bound to be a prominent question this weekend at On Deck, so the Brewers/WTMJ wanted to get this out there.

If they do make their announcement, consider that the choice may be as much about the eventual replacement of Uecker as Powell.

Actually players come and go, announcers stay forever. Bill Castro is likely the only left from when Jim started

Man. Happy for ya Jim, but sad for all of us as fans. You are a phenomenal broadcaster. You paint a picture of the game than anyone I have ever heard. Your voice has become synonymous with summer, and with my afternoons/evenings out in the yard or garage. I wish you all the best, and thank you.

At least it will make it easier to tell who is talking....

Yes, i admit it, sometimes i could not tell if it was Bob or Jim. But i just started listening to the games on the radio last summer...

I was moving back to Wisconsin from San Diego, well, the girlfriend came along, and we arranged our driving time each day so that we'd be on the road when the Brewers were playing. I'd hook up my cell phone, which had MLB radio on it, to my car stereo and we'd cruise the open road and listen to Bob and Jim. Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming, South Dakota, and then Minnesota.. It was magical, and i'll never forget it.

Good luck, Jim.

The past 3-4 years, I have a bonfire on Friday and Saturday nights, more often than not. It's tough to beat a bonfire, red meat on the grill, a few cold brews, and the Brewers on the radio on a saturday night in July, and it won't be quite the same without Jim.

I suppose that I should line up and pay my respects as well ...

I took in 90% of Brewers' games on the radio. While in college, I used to plan my studying around Bob and Jim's radio broadcasts (and to a lesser extent, Bucks' basketball). I would finish my reading assignments early in the day so that I could save the evenings for copying notes, making flash cards, and baseball. Rainouts use to wreck my nights.

Congrats Jim!

Brown used to be unable to discern between flyballs and home runs

Uecker seems to have more and more trouble distinguishing between the two as well. I think that's partially why I liked Powell so much, he called a great game and never allowed something to transpire without thoroughly explaining it. Meanwhile, Uecker sometimes prioritizes his stories over the actual game. Close games I always looked forward to Powell's innings and lopsided games I always looked forward to Uecker's.

Enjoy Atlanta, Jim! I remember a couple of years back when they were talking about the Furries convention in Pittsburgh. It really sounded like they were both trying to keep a straight face....but couldn't. Great chemistry between the two. I hope for the sake of the listeners that the next guy (or girl) has half the chemistry with Uke as Jim did.

By the way, i know losing Jim, CC, and Sheets hurts.. but i think we are forgetting the most painful loss: Brian Shouse

Personally, I was hoping that losing Branyan would be the most painful loss of the off-season.

This hurts. I've only been an avid fan since 2003, and I'd say my radio/TV split has been about 80/20. I always knew we were lucky with Jim and Uke, but it's true that you don't fully appreciate it until it's gone!

I wonder what ever happened to good old Loren? Loren Brown and WISN, what a rotten summer that was, couldn't hardly pick up the night games. I remember hearing somewhere that Uecker hated Mosely. Haven't seen hide nor hair of him since he was doing the sports on the Channel 18 news about 20 years ago. The TV tandem from that era Steve Shannon and Mike Hegan were pretty awful as well. Anybody remember SportsVue TV network? I'm thinking those games had the radio broadcasts dubbed in, but I could be wrong because I used to turn the TV guys down and turn the radio on when I watched the games.

Anyway, back on topic.... I remember thinking how hard it would be for anyone to replace Pat Hughes, but Powell definitely carved his own niche, and he'll be missed. It's tough being the minor leagues for broadcasters.

From Brewers.com . . .

The Brewers already have begun compiling resume tapes from prospective Powell replacements. Among the many candidates are Padres broadcaster Andy Mazur, an Illinois native formerly with the Cubs radio team, Cubs pregame host Cory Provus, Royals pre- and postgame host Steve Stewart, Dodgers pre- and postgame host Josh Suchon and longtime Brewers radio engineer Kent Summerfeld.

I'd like the Brewers to consider Ryan Radke. He impressed me when he worked with Daron Sutton on some of the spring webcasts. At the time, he was the Tucson Sidewinders broadcaster. (He probably still is.)

That’s the only thing Chicago’s good for: to tell people where Wisconsin is.

Now that Charlie Steiner's radio show on XM is over, is there any chance we could get him to come do our radio? I would love to hear Steiner and Bob chat during blowout games just to hear the wealth of baseball knowledge. Probably would never happen, but I personally would love it.
Everything I've ever known, I've learned from Brewerfan.net....Seriously though

Oh boy...that would actually be a really entertaining combo. Isn't Steiner doing radio for the Dodgers, though? Other than listening to him on XM, I admit to not knowing a whole lot about the guy.

(Actually, wikipedia says Steiner is supposed to do radio announcing for the Dodgers again next year).

You're right Invader--I didn't even think to check that out. I'm just sad that I got my new car with XM this week and now Steiner isn't doing his show anymore. He is one of the guys I would have loved listening to every time I got the chance.

Andy Mazur is brutal! Used to hear him when he would fill in for Pat Hughes on Cubs games (when Hughes would miss half an inning to go to the can)....the most monotone, boring radio personality I've heard.
