Twins interested in Gagne

Recommended Posts

Honestly, at this point, I wouldn't mind bringing him back if we could get him for like $3 million or so. Maybe the Brewers don't have that much to gamble on a setup man type, though. Of course, so many fans would complain about us throwing money at him, maybe the PR negatives would outweigh the potential upside he would still bring.

I take it you weren't there for fan appreciation day? Gagne bought 5000 tickets and gave them away to Brewer fans. Very classy move, in my opinion. It doesn't take away from the fact that he was awful early in the season, but that donation, as well as his late season performance would be enough to keep our fans off his back for a while, especially if he were only making 3 mil per.

I'd like to agree with you, steve267268, but I don't know that my faith in the "booing" subset of the Brewers' fanbase is that great.
Remember: the Brewers never panic like you do.

I hated seeing him come into the game most of the year but he does seem like a good guy. He showed real class by buying those tickets. I'd love to have him back at a very inexpensive contract. I also wouldn't blame him one bit if he refused to play in Milwaukee. It's sad to see your favorite teams fans acting like idiots. I'm not against booing, just use some discretion as to when to do it. When he walks on the field is a bit much. If a guy is giving less than his best effort over and over, then absolutely. Another post mentioned how it seemed like many fans were doing it to get a message to Yost and how with as stubborn as he is that was probably the worst thing you could do. What can be done to get people to stop booing at the first sign of failure? I wish some of the fans in Milwaukee were more educated and showed more class.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but can't the Brewers only reduce his salary by 20% from last year? Meaning we'd have to pay him 8 million next season. I think that rule gets waived if the player is signed after May 15th but I'm sure somone else will snap him up with a 2-3 million a year contract.

If it were only 2-3 million, I'd be happy to have him back as he pitched great down the stretch and I don't think he's nearly as bad as he was in the first half of the season.

We did not offer him arbitration so I believe that 20% rule does not apply. If Melvin were so inclined, he could sign Gagne to any contract he darn well pleased. This is kind of similar to Capuano, we declined arby to him because he would have gotten $2M+, instead we declined arby and signed him to a smaller contract

I hardly think giving away 5000 tickets @ less than $10 per ticket is the work of a saint when he is making $10 mil per year. The boos were absolutely ridiculous though. In baseball, confidence is everything.

I am in the minority here, but i actually wanted him back. Definitely not at 10 million, but for 3 or 4. While he was healhy and not pitching the 9th, he was fine. Looking at the pen, there are tons of question marks. Would anyone really say they know for sure Jorge Julio will do better than Gagne, or if Riske can stay healthy all season.

According to Fangraphs, Gagne average value over the past 4 seasons was $350 K. Thats under the minimum. He is worth nothing more than a minor league deal. If you project him to put up a 3 1/2ish ERA, he'd need to throw 80 innings to be worth $2 million. I doubt he'd be available for 60 innings.

That is the type of offer I could live with if the Brewers offered him. The only problem is that the semi-fans will never forget him for giving up those runs so he would get a hard time from them for the first couple outings.
