Justin Verlander

Recommended Posts

As far as the centerpiece, I would keep Gamel, Escobar, and Jeffress off the table - leaving probably Salome as the headliner. Verlander is good and is under team control for three seasons, but he's not an ace. Someone will probably overpay if he does hit the market though.

I would do Weeks, Salome, Braddock, and Gillespie for Verlander and Polanco. That is probably over paying for Verlander and Polanco. I would only do this if we could have both Verlander and Polanco at the start of the season. This would then allow the Brewers to move Green back over to 2B and he should be ready in 2010 to take over at 2B?

Before anyone posts it no Prince wouldn't be interesting for the Tigers. Cabrera already has 1B and the DH locked down.

Two spots for one player? This statement hardly supports your position.

I disagree that it would be overpaying, but I actually like this trade quite a bit.

I should have put OR instead of and. Prince and Cabrera are about the same defensively at 1B. Both should be a DH. I just don't see Prince being someone the Tigers would go after since Cabrera would be just as good as Prince at either 1B or DH. I believe the Tigers will probably just move Cabrera off of 1B and into the DH role in a couple of years.

Verlander is very attractive to me. (in a baseball sense) But why were his numbers so bad last year? 11-17 4.44 ERA and a 1.40 WHIP. Yikes!
I'm going to go with a bad year it happens and it was probably bound to happen to him. He is still a #1 and I would rather have Verlander than some other pitchers mentioned around here in trades. In the deal I posted earlier the Tigers would start to become competitive in 2010 again. But I believe the Tigers would be looking for pitching prospects more than positional players to fill out its team.

Maybe if the Brewers could trade Fielder to the Angels for some young pitching and then flip those prospects for a Verlander + package would be nice.

I'd much rather trade Escobar than Hardy. I honestly think Escobar is at his highest trade value now. I could easily see Escobar being a bust in the majors.

Hardy is a proven defensive stud, all star shortstop with some pop. Those don't come around often.

Verlander's had a lot of abuse on his arm the last two or three years. I'd expect a significant injury one of these days.

Amen to that! Escobar has great potential, but Hardy has and is already doing it. I'm sure Escobar has high trade value with as highly touted as he is. I would rather trade him then JJ.

He hasn't had that much abuse compared to other pitchers that are named around here for a trade. Verlander has had as much abuse as Cain has had.

A package highlighted by Escobar makes sense for both teams. The Tigers are going with Adam Everett as there SS this year, and he's on a 1 year deal. If Escobar suddenly stops developing, he's still just as good as Everett. The Tigers are probably set at catcher, as they've just aquired Gerald Laird.

If the Brewers made a mid-season deal for Verlander, the improvement we'd add would be completely negated if we dealt Hardy for him, as we'd then be worse at SS. That would be pointless.

I do share the same concerns that Hauser and sbrylski have with verlanders declining performance and velocity. I obviously am only inteested if he's pitching well with good stuff.

I also agree with Dhonks about Fielder. I'm suprised the Tigers haven't called about Fielder already. He'd be incredibly popular there, and there going to need to do something to sell some tickets next year.

" Verlander has had as much abuse as Cain has had. "

Yeah, I was actually surprised that Cain had been in the top ten the last three seasons in PAP. I'm not interested in either of them if I'm the Brewers.

I'm not interested in any pitcher who has produced mightily at the major league level and the club still controls him for three more years and the original club is willing to trade. Who would trade such a player? Are they complete idiots in Detroit (they did trade for DW) or do they suspect something?

verlander's fastball has lost 1.9 mph since he entered the league. over the same time his curveball has gotten 1.7 mph faster and his changeup has gotten 2.8 mph faster. less difference in velocity between pitches just makes the batter's job that much easier.

even so, if he could be had for any combination of players not including jeffress, gamel, or escobar i'd be interested.
