Are free agent rankings fair to the players?

I am not sympathetic towards the players very often since they make a lot of money to play a game many would play for free, but the case of Juan Cruz has me questioning whether the current ranking system is fair to the players. Juan Cruz would certainly be a sought after free agent if he was not considered a Type A free agent. Melvin outright said that the team would be interested in him if they would not lose 2 high draft picks. How is the players union ok with this? It seems like this label that gets placed on them can have a very large affect on their market value.

Well, the Brewers would only lose one pick (their 1st round), while the team that lost the FA would gain two (including the supplemental).

 

The players union had to agree with it, but probably gained somewhere else. No system will be entirely fair to everyone. I think its worse that the Brewers got a second rnd pick (plus supplemental) instead of a first.

 

Seems like MLB would do better to have a review system (like the NFL) to award compensation picks. But that could be the sour grapes talking, too...

You would think the Yankees should lose their 2nd round pick for CC and the Brewers would gain an extra supplemental at the start of the round. I'd be much happier with that situation.

Yeah, thats what I meant by a review board assigning supplemental picks. Yanks automatically lose their 2nd, but a review board adds two supplemental 1st rounds (maybe one at the beginning, one at the end of the supp round) to compensate for the 2nd best FA. Where losing Teixeira would gain Atlanta the Yanks 1st and the 1st supplemental pick.

 

Seems more fair that way...

forget the review board or ratings system. Why not make the compensation based on the average annual salary a FA is signed for? say, 15x average annual baseball salary=Type A and 8x= Type B.

Cruz was offered arby. He could have taken it. Same goes with Sheets.

 

I'll bet Cruz ends up a Yankee because he won't cost them a very high pick.
