Rotoworld - 2004 Top Prospect Recap

fondybrewfan
If you go to rotoworld main MLB page they have a nice recap of their Top 100 prospects from 2004. There are quite a few Brewers on the list: Fielder, Hardy, Hart, Parra, Krynzel, Nelson, and Jones. So it looks to me like they batted .500. Overall it seems like they did a decent job although they admit that Baseball America had fewer misses. It is pretty amazing that the Crew had 7 of the top 100 that year.

You forgot to mention Weeks. He's ranked very highly. So they did better than .500. They got 5 to be at least solid big leaguers, one more a AAAA type that'll log plenty of time in the big leagues, and two others that have struggled to perform past AA.

Check out how many times "injury" comes up in John Sickels' review ot the top 50 pitching prospects of 2004.

Thanks for pointing that out Mass. There's a lot here who claim the Brewers are bad at developing pitchers, and blame the organization for injuring its pitchers. Everybody has pitching prospects ruined by injury. Pitttsburg had more than twice as many college 1st round pitchers get injured than the total number of 1st round pitchers we've drafted since 2000. If anything, we're pretty good at keeping guys healthy. The Brewers will have 2 homegrown pitchers in its starting rotation. That's impressive when you realize how few 1-2 round picks have been used on pitchers. If somehow Sheets resigns, no team in baseball will have more homegrown starters in its rotation.

That would give the Brewers three in Yo, Parra and Sheets. Would the Twins have more with Slowey, Baker, Blackburn and Perkins. Not to mention the Twins developed Liriano from high A on. That is some impressive pitcher development right there.

I think you misunderstand my stance. Injuries are a part of sports, especially for pitchers as there's nothing ergonomic about throwing a baseball overhand. My issue is with the incredibly slow diagnosis and seemingly poor recovery from injuries. Elbow tendinitis... really? In a pitcher? Shoulder strain... again really? Chronic soreness in any joint is more than tendinitis or a strain. I realize NFL teams go with "knee sprain" and the like because they have a very good idea what the problem area is but aren't certain about the severity. The difference is their players have an MRI immediately and the diagnosis is changed appropriately. Take Jones for example, why should shoulder surgery lead to Tommy John surgery or vice versa? Look at Sheets and the elbow tear that got worse last season, Rogers needing multiple surgeries on his shoulder.. just because pitchers flame out due to injury doesn't give the team a free pass. It's not even limited to pitchers, Weeks played on a bum wrist for months, Gamel played hurt the most of the second half... Again I never suggested they need to work miracles, I just don't think they are particularily good in the injury department as an organization.
