Pedro?

Well, the Brewers should be. If he can throw in the low 90s consistently, he's a solid #3 or even a #2.

He would teach the young pitchers to throw inside, and would mesh with our young Latin pitchers well.

Even if he's terrible, a 6 million dollar mistake is not worse than last year's 10 million dollar mistake.

I'm really not sure why anyone thinks investing in Pedro is a good risk for the Brewers at this point. The guy's in his age-37 season, and really wasn't even close to effective at any point in 2008.

What are these statements based upon? Because he has thrown inside in the past? Because he's Latino? Heck, do any young Brewers SP (really only Parra & YoGa) have a big problem throwing inside?

I came up with an idea. What about signing Pedro, and piggybacking him with Soup? Soup can do his 3 innings and get taken out before the shelling starts, and Pedro can be the bridge to the BP.
Suppan was much better than Pedro last year, I don't see whats changed.

Xellence, what has changed is that Pedro will be a year farther removed from major shoulder surgery. It's too bad, because the injury also ruined his brother's career. At the same time, we won't know how much he can recover until he's had time to test it out

Well, they can probably afford him more than the Brewers at this point.

Although it now looks like he may not be going to Houston. This from MLB Trade Rumors:

"Astros GM Ed Wade, who said the team has had "zero discussions" on the Pedro front. Martinez is not close to signing with the Astros...MLB.com's Alyson Footer also confirmed that the Astros are not close to an agreement with Pedro."

They also talk about Manny Ramirez talking with Pedro. Maybe he'll end up in LA.

I thought I'd bump this up, since Pedro keeps being mentioned as a possibility after Suppan's second bad outing of the year.

I don't think it's realistic at all. Reports are that he's still asking for $5 million or so, which I doubt the Brewers have. I also doubt he'd want to even come to Milwaukee. Seems like the type who wants the limelight. I think people forget that he's been injury riddled and not that good for the last couple years. Just thought it might be worth discussing at least.

Latest reports say he's still sticking to his $5 million price tag (according to MLB Trade Rumors). If that continues to be the case, he might just price himself out of playing this year.

Edit: And now right after I post that, they have a ton of new info up on Pedro, saying he may sign within the next two weeks, and the high asking price may simply be a tactic to delay his return. They don't really name any teams as solid possible suitors, though. Says the Nats and Angels have both have interest in the past, but neither team has talked to Martinez's camp in the past few weeks.

Just read the same article from the Boston Globe.

A couple of other Brewer mentions in it. First, talks about possible Boston interest in Mitch Stetter. "The Sox, who scouted him last week, are simply being thorough and exploring options in case they come to need another lefty in the pen."

Second, Cafardo calls Milwaukee one of the teams that could use Frank Catalanotto.

So who would we bump the rotation? I guess with the performances on this road trip, I am a little more content with the rotation. That is unless Melvin would actually demote Suppan to the bullpen, then I would be all for this move. I suppose sending Parra to AAA to figure out his command might be another option. But if Parra figures it out you still have to find a way to get him back in the rotation.

Maybe the article has been changed, but right now it says "The Brewers may be emerging in the hunt."

I apologize... I had thought it was already known on this board that the Brewers have been previously mentioned as being a team in the hunt (per MLBTraderumors.com)... When I saw that the were "emerging" I assumed it meant that they were emerging from those teams who were 'in the hunt" for Pedro... Again, I apologize if my previous post mislead anyone! And yes, the article was indeed "unsourced speculation"!!! WoooHooo!

Holy crap I would turn handsprings if we signed Pedro. Starter, Set up man, closer, I dont care. Even for just a year, it would be awesome, and if he is healthy (a big if I know) and if he only pitches from June to end of the year I think he could be a very good additional piece. If I recall he looked decent in the WBC. NICE!
