Pedro?

Anyone else think we should take a flyer on Pedro? He could come on in incentive laiden contract. 1 year deal no risk with potential reward. I personally think he doesn't have a lot left in the tank, but he might be worth the risk. He also say he'd be willing to play anywhere...

Rotation would be

Gallardo

Pedro

Parra

Bush

Suppan

Considering that the rotation has no depth whatsoever, signing Pedro to a 1 year incentive laden contract seems like a no brainer. It's a complete roll of the dice, but the reward could could be huge. Plus, we'd might have enough in the till afterwards to sign Sheets or an innings eater at a fair price.

Isn't the huge possiblity of him pitching horribly, like he did last year, a risk?

The guy is was a pitching artist - id love it.

Fixed that for ya.

I'd say around 100 very entertaining innings though if we we were lucky.....

I doubt Mets fans got much entertainment out of the 109 innings he gave with a 5.62 ERA last year. Suppan was significantly better than him last year.

Yeah, I was thinking he might be a good buy low candidate earlier this offseason, but then I looked at his stats, and he was absolutely horrible for the Mets last year. By all accounts his velocity is way down too. His injuries have really left him as a shell of his former self.

I swear, my first thought upon seeing this thread title was our generous fellow poster, Pedro. I don't want to see him in a transaction rumor or proposal. He's far too valuable an asset around bf.net nation. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif

I'd happily consider Pedro. He has performed about as expected recently given that he had major shoulder repairwork done. My only real concern with Pedro would be that the same injury ended his brother's career, and he was also pretty darn good before the shoulder tear. Still, at the start of the offseason I had Pedro rated ahead of guys like Lowe, Burnett, etc because he'd likely sign for less money and for fewer years. Pedro at an incentive laiden $4 million is a good deal for both sides

The problem with Pedro is that even at this stage, you probably have to pay a premium for his name when you could get say an Odalis Perez (who had a better year than Pedro) for close to minimum or on a minor league deal and not bat an eye if you end up releasing him.

every GM needs to be able to find those guys whose bad year/s were an aberration, but nothing about Pedro Martinez says that his regression is about anything other than age and past injuries. what would make it even harder about signing Pedro is that he's not a McClung type, that if he bombed out as a starter, he's really not the sort of pitcher that you could slot into the bullpen.

How many power pitchers his size really do well in their 30's after major shoulder surgery? At his size to throw the way he did always amazed me but it had to be a max effort type of guy to do that. Max effort + age = diminished returns.

Exactly his problem. He still hits his location but without the mid 90's stuff, he needs to become a finesse type pitcher to get guys out. Its something he's been too stubborn to do.

The only reason Pedro gets much hype from the past couple years is because he was property of the Mets. In NY, big name = assumption of quality & tons of headlines.

One loose equivalent could be Mark Prior, whose minor-league/NRI contract with the Padres in the past 48 hours hardly made a ripple. If Prior's property of the Mets or Yankees, the story is as big or bigger than the Pedro story.

If Pedro pitched for the Pirates, Royals, Mariners, etc. last year, no one pays his free agency hardly any mind. For that matter, he probably also wouldn't have this absurd concept of his market value, either.

I think baseball is better with a healthy Pedro Martinez pitching in the league. Here is to him impressing in the WBC and catching on with a club, even as a closer, even with someone like the Cardinals. One of my favorite players of the past 15 years.

Well, Pedro looked pretty good pitching for the Dominican Republic today. Sure it was only three innings, but it was enough that teams will look at him more seriously now. I can't say I would mind seeing him in a Brewers uniform this year, but I really don't see that happening. Some big market team will take a chance on him I'm guessing.

The most incredible part of the 08-09 off-season to me is that both Pedro and Pudge are both on the market.

I'd certainly advocate taking a flier on either player for $5 mil, but I'm guessing the reason they're still in FA is because they want more than that.

My guess is possibly one holdup with Pedro Martinez is that he still wants to be a starter, where it makes more sense to probably use him as a reliever/spot starter at this point.

Really though, Pedro holds all the cards at this point if that's the case. He's made more than enough money in his career to let him wait until a few weeks into the season when some contender will undoubtedly have a significant injury to a starting pitcher, and will be very interested in bringing him in.
